Book In Hospital and Camp in the American Civil War

Download or read book In Hospital and Camp in the American Civil War written by Sophronia E. Bucklin and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UPDATE 2021: re-edited and additional annotations. Long before the end of the American Civil War, Sophronia Bucklin had seen it all: sickness, shattered bodies, amputations, death, and torrents of blood. In this 1869 book, she spares the reader no detail while humanizing what would otherwise be just statistics of casualties. She and her sister nurses cared for Union and Confederate, black and white, dressed their wounds and held their hands as they died. But she also has stories of hope and happy endings. Like her comrades, they didn't always play by the rules but did what they thought best for the soldiers. She volunteered for service at Gettysburg. She heard the cannons up close and had shrapnel and minnie balls rip through the canvas of her hospital tent.

Book It s Like Heaven

Download or read book It s Like Heaven written by Dorothy H. Jordan and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1982 Dorothy H. Jordan founded Camp Sunshine to provide children with cancer a safe, normal childhood experience, to show them that others share their challenges, and to help them find community and support. In 1983 approximately forty campers between the ages of seven and eighteen attended the first summer camp, held in the north Georgia mountains. Thirty-five years later, more than four hundred campers attended the 2018 summer camp, and several hundred more children and family members participated in more than 150 additional recreational, educational, and supportive Camp Sunshine programs held throughout the year in metro Atlanta, Savannah, and other areas of Georgia. Today Camp Sunshine, a nonprofit organization, has hundreds of dedicated volunteers who help the leadership staff of the camp with its multiple year-round programs, as well as pediatric oncology nurses and other medical professionals who take care of the campers’ medical needs while they attend those programs. It’s Like Heaven documents the story of the first thirty-five years of Camp Sunshine through the voices of campers, their nurses, counselors, and other volunteers. Each chapter is a former camper’s first-person story about childhood cancer and the Camp Sunshine journey, followed by reflections on the camper’s experience by the camper’s nurse or another member of the camp community, creating a unique narrative of each camper’s struggle and path toward healing. Every story includes photos of both the camper and the camper’s mentor as well as several photos that illustrate the connections, bonds, and strength of community created through Camp Sunshine.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Years in Camp and Hospital N o sir; but if I had expected to find a chap that needed it as much as you do, you should have been supplied. A shout was raised that brought more than five hundred men about me. It was a successful hit. Not only must the singing be continued, but the Lieutenant came forward and helped to sell the songs. Hundreds of the men sang with me, and it was al most impossible to get away from the camp. Even the Colonel and surgeon came out and listened, while the officers joined in promiscuously with the men, all singing as if it were a religious, instead of a military camp-meeting.
