Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this distinctive volume on the life of Jesus, Robert Peterson presents the biblical doctrine of Christ’s saving work in a fresh and comprehensive way. Peterson’s ability to explain the relationship between text and doctrine, to uncover connections that have eluded many others, and to organize the material in a way that makes it clear to seminarians and pastors and accessible to the layman, makes this volume a work to be noted. Peterson is as sound as they come, and his extensive preaching and teaching ministry enables him to make complex theological matters comprehensible to nonspecialists. Salvation Accomplished by the Son aims to glorify Christ by presenting the saving work of Jesus in greater scope than has previously been done, and to encourage Christians to worship and serve him. This book explains in detail what Christ has done to rescue us, both his deeds and the biblical pictures illustrating them. Offered here is a substantive, significant, and enduring treatise on a key Christian doctrine—the work of Christ.

Book The Quest for the Christ Child in the Later Middle Ages

Download or read book The Quest for the Christ Child in the Later Middle Ages written by Mary Dzon and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the twelfth century, clergy and laity alike started wondering with intensity about the historical and developmental details of Jesus' early life. Was the Christ Child like other children, whose characteristics and capabilities depended on their age? Was he sweet and tender, or formidable and powerful? Not finding sufficient information in the Gospels, which are almost completely silent about Jesus' childhood, medieval Christians turned to centuries-old apocryphal texts for answers. In The Quest for the Christ Child in the Later Middle Ages, Mary Dzon demonstrates how these apocryphal legends fostered a vibrant and creative medieval piety. Popular tales about the Christ Child entertained the laity and at the same time were reviled by some members of the intellectual elite of the church. In either case, such legends, so persistent, left their mark on theological, devotional, and literary texts. The Cistercian abbot Aelred of Rievaulx urged his monastic readers to imitate the Christ Child's development through spiritual growth; Francis of Assisi encouraged his followers to emulate the Christ Child's poverty and rusticity; Thomas Aquinas, for his part, believed that apocryphal stories about the Christ Child would encourage youths to be presumptuous, while Birgitta of Sweden provided pious alternatives in her many Marian revelations. Through close readings of such writings, Dzon explores the continued transmission and appeal of apocryphal legends throughout the Middle Ages and demonstrates the significant impact that the Christ Child had in shaping the medieval religious imagination.

This book was released on 2020-08-08 with total page 1111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Spirit at work The Gospel is spreading In this powerful narrative, Luke records specific historical events marking the crucial moments of transition from Jesus’ physical departure from earth (ascension) to the coming of the Holy Spirit to earth, focusing on the commission of the apostles and the beginning of the ministry of the Church of Jesus Christ in spreading the Gospel beyond Jerusalem to the ends of the world. Luke outlines an investigative historical narrative, detailing the works of the Holy Spirit through the apostles – primarily Peter, Stephen, and Paul. Although Luke’s narrative was addressed to an individual Acts 1:1, it is equally relevant to the Church of Jesus Christ across the ages. This verse-by-verse devotional study, complete with engaging commentary and practical life applications, will renew your appreciation of the grace of God in your own life and challenge you to pursue a closer walk with Christ. As you embark on this journey, surrender yourself to the living Word of God to inspire you to share the fundamental message of the gospel with others: we are reconciled to the Father not by our works, but only by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This extensive Devotional Commentary candidly addresses various controversial issues and offers challenging devotional thoughts and precepts, assuring the redeemed and warning the unsaved about the unchanging Truth of God's Holy Word. May we heed the words of Christ and open our ears to "hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
