Download or read book Treat written by Mary Sullivan and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Up On Bob, a whimsical tale of a Boston Terrier with a short attention span and his never-ending pursuit of what he wants most. As the old saying goes, “Give a dog a ball, and he'll beg to play for days. But give a dog a treat, and he’ll never stop begging.” In this companion to Mary Sullivan's Geisel Award-winning Ball, there's a new dog in town and he is focused on finding a treat, no matter the cost. But endless tricks and futile searching (you can't eat Grandma’s dentures!) can be pretty exhausting. Just when he’s about to give up hope…what’s this? TREAT! In this hilarious and heartwarming graphic novel/picture book hybrid, readers will rejoice and laugh as they recognize the silly, but always determined, behavior of man’s best friend. “Sullivan spins a hilarious minidrama around a hyperactive canine and a single word of text...Cartoonlike illustrations, precisely drawn in digitally colored pencil, perfectly capture the portly, perky-eared, wide-eyed canine's treat mania.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review “Sullivan has created quite a treat herself: a canine hero with a one-track mind and an endlessly expressive one-word vocabulary (aided by comically frenetic typography) whose approach to thwarted desire is, as any child will recognize, all too human.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Book No Way to Treat a Child

Download or read book No Way to Treat a Child written by Naomi Schaefer Riley and published by Bombardier Books. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kids in danger are treated instrumentally to promote the rehabilitation of their parents, the welfare of their communities, and the social justice of their race and tribe—all with the inevitable result that their most precious developmental years are lost in bureaucratic and judicial red tape. It is time to stop letting efforts to fix the child welfare system get derailed by activists who are concerned with race-matching, blood ties, and the abstract demands of social justice, and start asking the most important question: Where are the emotionally and financially stable, loving, and permanent homes where these kids can thrive? “Naomi Riley’s book reveals the extent to which abused and abandoned children are often injured by their government rescuers. It is a must-read for those seeking solutions to this national crisis.” —Robert L. Woodson, Sr., civil rights leader and president of the Woodson Center “Everyone interested in child welfare should grapple with Naomi Riley’s powerful evidence that the current system ill-serves the safety and well-being of vulnerable kids.” —Walter Olson, senior fellow, Cato Institute, Robert A. Levy Center for Constitutional Studies

Book How to Treat People A Nurse s Notes

Download or read book How to Treat People A Nurse s Notes written by Molly Case and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating and poignant memoir of the body and its care, told through the experiences of a young nurse. As a teenager, Molly Case underwent an operation that saved her life. Nearly a decade later, she finds herself in the operating room again—this time as a trainee nurse. She learns to care for her patients, sharing not only their pain, but also life-affirming moments of hope. In doing so, she offers a compelling account of the processes that keep them alive, from respiratory examinations to surgical prep, and of the extraordinary moments of human connection that sustain both nurse and patient. In rich, lyrical prose, Case illustrates the intricacies of the human condition through the hand of a stranger offered in solace, a gentle word in response to fear and anger, or the witnessing of a person’s last breaths. It is these moments of empathy, in the extremis of human experience, that define us as people. But when Molly’s father is admitted to the cardiac unit where she works, the professional and the personal suddenly collide. Weaving together medical history, art, memoir, and science, How to Treat People beautifully explores the oscillating rhythms of life and death in a tender reminder that we can all find meaning in being, even for a moment, part of the lives of others.

Book Dutch Treat

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rien Poortvliet
  • Publisher : ABRAMS
  • Release : 1981
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Dutch Treat written by Rien Poortvliet and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 1981 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luckily for everyone, the famous artist Rien Poortvliet, who from his pastoral retreat in Holland has charmed millions with his books Gnomes, The Living Forest, and The Farm Book, felt the urge to make another book. Almost before he knew it, he was setting down on paper, with pencil and brush, the myriad thoughts, memories, observations, and comments that flowed into his mind. Here, in his own words and in his inimitable sketches and paintings, is the story of the artist's life, by turns matter-of-fact and sentimental, serious and comic. Here are is family (the grownups and the babies), his friends (human and animal), and the people of the village--as well as persons vividly remembered from the past. Some of Poortvliet's keenest recollections are of World War II: holding on to his mother's hand as they watched the bombing of Rotterdam in the distance; being bored but grateful for endless meals of mashed carrots, onions, and potatoes during the starvation winter; feeling horror at the sight of angry mobs painting red swastikas on the shaved heads of the camp followers of the German troops. Poortvliet's spontaneous evocations of the varied aspects of the Netherlands--through his superb drawings and paintings and his sensitive running comment--give the reader a strong sense of the land and its inhabitants. His depictions of people in their customary daily pursuits and of woodland animals in their natural settings alike arouse profound admiration. Dutch Treat is pervaded by a sense of the beauty of nature and its creatures and leavened by Poortvliet's gentle but irrepressible humor. No one will be able to resist it. -- Inside jacket flap.

Book How to Treat Persons

  • Author : Samuel J. Kerstein
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2013-02-21
  • ISBN : 0191652415
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book How to Treat Persons written by Samuel J. Kerstein and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel J. Kerstein develops a new, broadly Kantian account of the ethical issues that arise when a person treats another merely as a means, that is, 'just uses' the other and thereby acts wrongly. He takes his inspiration from Immanuel Kant's 'Formula of Humanity', which commands that we treat persons never merely as means but always as ends in themselves, and then develops the ideas suggested by the Formula into clear moral principles. Kerstein questions the plausibility of an orthodox Kantian account of the dignity of persons, before going on to develop a new, detailed account of his own. Kerstein's second main goal is to show how the Kantian principles he develops shed light on pressing issues in bioethics. He investigates how, morally speaking, scarce resources such as flu vaccine ought to be distributed—and he argues that allocating such resources in order to maximize benefits can be inconsistent with respecting persons' dignity. The book explores the morality of regulated markets in organs, and contends that in many contexts, buying organs from live 'donors' fails to honour their dignity. Finally, it probes the ethics of conducting research on 'anonymized' biological samples, and of conducting placebo-controlled pharmaceutical trials in developing countries. How to Treat Persons champions the view that even if an agent gets another's voluntary, informed consent to use parts of his body for transplantation or medical research, she might nevertheless be treating him merely as a means or failing to respect his dignity.
