Book The Light Shines On in the Darkness

Download or read book The Light Shines On in the Darkness written by Robert Spitzer and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would an all-loving God allow suffering? Are not suffering and love opposed to one another? Does suffering have any meaning or benefit? Is there any objective evidence for God, for a soul that will survive bodily death, for the resurrection of Jesus? Who is God anyway – benevolent and loving, or angry and retributive? Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., gives a comprehensive response to these questions and many others, explaining the contemporary evidence for God, the soul, and the resurrection. He discusses how God uses suffering to lead us to compassion for others and eternal life. He also shows how the Holy Spirit guides us through times of suffering toward our salvation, explaining the signs and the interior movements that reveal the Spirit's actions. Fr. Spitzer not only addresses the perplexing questions associated with suffering but teaches us how to suffer well. He points out some of the most common mistakes people make when trying to interpret God's motives for allowing or alleviating suffering. He demonstrates why suffering – in combination with love – is one of the most powerful motivating agents for personal, cultural, and societal development.

Book American Heart of Darkness

Download or read book American Heart of Darkness written by Robert Kirkconnell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days, most Americans know that the country has serious problems. Problems that will have to be addressed before the country can move forward. What are these problems? Where did they come from? Before we can move forward we have to know where we are and how we got there. American Heart of Darkness paints an unvarnished picture of the seeds of destruction that were sown into the foundations of the Republic from the very beginning. How did slavery come about in the "land of the free?" How did a pre-Columbian native population, in North America alone, of over eighteen million (yes, you heard it right) native peoples dwindle down to about two hundred thousand? Was it really Small Pox? Why has a people who constantly talk about freedom, democracy, equality, human rights, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness continually practiced racism, genocide, and war? How do drugs come into the country, and who is really behind the most profitable product sold in the world? There are also other unanswered questions that need to be explored: Why were thousands of the worst Nazi war criminals given refuge in the U.S.? Who financed Hitler? Where did Hitler get his "master race" and genocidal ideas from? Was Lee Harvey Oswald a C.I.A. agent? Were Oswald, Sirhan Sirhan, Ted Kaczynski, Timothy McVey, and the "Peoples Temple" all mind control, MKULTRA, subjects? What really happened in the Jeffery MacDonald, so-called "Fatal Vision" case? How does hundreds of billions of dollars come into the United States every year without detection? The answers to these questions, and many more, will surprise you! They are not in the History books, although they should be. American Heart of Darkness, Volume I, explores the ugly side of America that has been hidden for far too long, and it is literally killing us. This book is not for the reader looking for an uplifting story to escape everyday life for a few hours. It is for true patriots who are sick and tired of being lied to and stolen from. It is for those who know they need to do something but do not know where to start. It is for those who feel powerless and that America's problems are far too big for "little ol' me" to handle. It is for those with the courage to go from darkness to light. As comedian and activist Dick Gregory once said, "If you been in the DARK for so long, LIGHT will hurt your eyes ." This book will hurt your eyes. The reader will be shocked, then angry, then motivated, and finally, in the author's next two books, empowered and liberated. It is better to see where we are and where we need to go, right now, before it is too late. Congratulations! If you have read this far this book is probably for you. Please keep in mind the universal truth that with any form of government, the leaders only have the power that the people allow them have. This was true in India when a little skinny guy named Gandhi with no money and only a rag wrapped around his middle took on the British Empire, and won! There is no question that the American people have the power to reclaim a government that is clearly not being run for them. We have to empower ourselves to take this government back from only a handful of selfish and greedy individuals, who have proven that they only care about making more and more money. Let us all stop giving "them" the power that belongs to us. Reading this book is a beginning, and then we will talk about what to do about it in the author's next two books!

And as she is evolves further into a monstrous predator, rage soon wins over reason. Will Spear finish his hunt, before he becomes the hunted? PRAISE FOR THE TRANSFORMATION SERIES "One of his best works so far ... Asher is a modern master of Sci-Fi" Starburst magazine "Beautifully paced ... does just as well as at slam-bang action scenes as at painting frightening pictures" Publishers Weekly, starred review "Blends large portions of horror and mystery into an SF tale of revenge and redemption ... a complex and satisfying work" Library Journal, starred review "Hardboiled, fast-paced space opera epic ... Asher's books are similar to the world of Iain M. Banks' Culture universe, but the Polity is arguably a much darker and more vicious environment - and all the better for it" TheRegister.co.uk

Book Darkness Falls on the Land of Light

Download or read book Darkness Falls on the Land of Light written by Douglas L. Winiarski and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sweeping history of popular religion in eighteenth-century New England examines the experiences of ordinary people living through extraordinary times. Drawing on an unprecedented quantity of letters, diaries, and testimonies, Douglas Winiarski recovers the pervasive and vigorous lay piety of the early eighteenth century. George Whitefield's preaching tour of 1740 called into question the fundamental assumptions of this thriving religious culture. Incited by Whitefield and fascinated by miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit--visions, bodily fits, and sudden conversions--countless New Englanders broke ranks with family, neighbors, and ministers who dismissed their religious experiences as delusive enthusiasm. These new converts, the progenitors of today's evangelical movement, bitterly assaulted the Congregational establishment. The 1740s and 1750s were the dark night of the New England soul, as men and women groped toward a restructured religious order. Conflict transformed inclusive parishes into exclusive networks of combative spiritual seekers. Then as now, evangelicalism emboldened ordinary people to question traditional authorities. Their challenge shattered whole communities.

Book Wandering in Darkness

Download or read book Wandering in Darkness written by Eleonore Stump and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only the most naïve or tendentious among us would deny the extent and intensity of suffering in the world. Can one hold, consistently with the common view of suffering in the world, that there is an omniscient, omnipotent, perfectly good God? This book argues that one can. Wandering in Darkness first presents the moral psychology and value theory within which one typical traditional theodicy, namely, that of Thomas Aquinas, is embedded. It explicates Aquinas's account of the good for human beings, including the nature of love and union among persons. Eleonore Stump also makes use of developments in neurobiology and developmental psychology to illuminate the nature of such union. Stump then turns to an examination of narratives. In a methodological section focused on epistemological issues, the book uses recent research involving autism spectrum disorder to argue that some philosophical problems are best considered in the context of narratives. Using the methodology argued for, the book gives detailed, innovative exegeses of the stories of Job, Samson, Abraham and Isaac, and Mary of Bethany. In the context of these stories and against the backdrop of Aquinas's other views, Stump presents Aquinas's own theodicy, and shows that Aquinas's theodicy gives a powerful explanation for God's allowing suffering. She concludes by arguing that this explanation constitutes a consistent and cogent defense for the problem of suffering.

Book Hope in the Dark

Download or read book Hope in the Dark written by Rebecca Solnit and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2016-05-14 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] landmark book . . . Solnit illustrates how the uprisings that begin on the streets can upend the status quo and topple authoritarian regimes” (Vice). A book as powerful and influential as Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me, her Hope in the Dark was written to counter the despair of activists at a moment when they were focused on their losses and had turned their back to the victories behind them—and the unimaginable changes soon to come. In it, she makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable. Drawing on her decades of activism and a wide reading of environmental, cultural, and political history, Solnit argues that radicals have a long, neglected history of transformative victories, that the positive consequences of our acts are not always immediately seen, directly knowable, or even measurable, and that pessimism and despair rest on an unwarranted confidence about what is going to happen next. Now, with a moving new introduction explaining how the book came about and a new afterword that helps teach us how to hope and act in our unnerving world, she brings a new illumination to the darkness of our times in an unforgettable new edition of this classic book. “One of the best books of the 21st century.” —The Guardian “No writer has better understood the mix of fear and possibility, peril and exuberance that’s marked this new millennium.” —Bill McKibben, New York Times–bestselling author of Falter “An elegant reminder that activist victories are easily forgotten, and that they often come in extremely unexpected, roundabout ways.” —The New Yorker
