Book Redemption Alley

Download or read book Redemption Alley written by Bob Perry (Purzycki) and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After hitting rock bottom through addiction, bowling legend Bob Perry learned that religion is for people who don't want to go to hell. Spirituality is for people who have already been there. Perry tells his heart-wrenching, inspiring story of bowling for the mob and drug and alcohol addiction in his new book, Redemption Alley. Perry, considered by many to be one of the most naturally-talented bowlers in the history of the sport, had potential to become one of the best even at the young age of 12. Unfortunately, he grew up in 1970's Paterson, New Jersey, where everyone knew someone who was "connected"—with the mob, that is. Instead of training for championships, Perry began doing odd jobs for wiseguys and hustling hundreds of thousands of dollars in after-house "action bowling" for John Gotti, who later became the boss of the Gambino crime family. Perry's connections with organized crime eventually landed him in federal prison, but not before he became addicted to crack cocaine, alcohol, and painkillers and was homeless on the streets of New York. Ultimately, Perry washed up on the shores of St. Christopher's Inn, a shelter run by Franciscan monks. It was there that he had six fateful encounters with an angelic messenger who no one else could see-a monk whose message was so powerful that Bob Perry has now been sober for 22 years. In Redemption Alley, Perry not only shares his remarkable story of bowling success, his dangerous association with hoodlums and gangsters, and his recovery from addiction, but also his inspiring, decades-long spiritual quest, and his sober journey back into the bowling world.

Book Lunch with Tommy and Stasia

Download or read book Lunch with Tommy and Stasia written by Mike Morin and published by . This book was released on 2019-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hold on to your tray tables, boys and girls!" This was the Saturday lunchtime rally cry from legendary Channel 5 sportscaster Don Gillis. Every week for nearly four decades, families slurped tomato soup and crunched on grilled cheese sandwiches while the world's best candlepin bowlers performed otherworldly feats for over 200,000 TV viewers. Candlepin Bowling, often the top-rated Boston sports show of the week, made names like Czernicki, Olszta, and Jutras as familiar as Bird, Yastrzemski and Orr. Mike Morin's new book, Lunch With Tommy and Stasia: TV's Golden Age of Candlepin Bowling, is the very first behind-the-scenes look at what made these pop-up stars tick. Morin watched hundreds of hours of classic TV matches and then sought out the bowlers to uncover what really happened on (and off) the lanes. As a TV co-host of nearly 300 candlepin bowling episodes in Boston and New Hampshire, Morin got to know the players personally. They didn't hold back as they shared their stories, many never heard before. Stories like:Mike Sargent wins a big-money purse match but instead gets paid with something he never expected.Tom Olszta's discarded, muddy bowling balls make a surprise appearance courtesy of Santa.Hollywood celebrities love candlepins. Just ask Eve "Jan Brady" Plumb, Will Ferrell, and Simpson's executive producer Matt Selman. The highs and lows are all laid out, accompanied by a photo gallery that will bring back memories of Saturday lunches with Tommy, Stasia, and hundreds of other candlepin bowling stars. Finally, their stories are told.

Book Welcome to Hell World

Download or read book Welcome to Hell World written by Luke O'Neil and published by OR Books. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Luke O’Neil isn’t angry, he’s asleep. When he’s awake, he gives vent to some of the most heartfelt, political and anger-fueled prose to power its way to the public sphere since Hunter S. Thompson smashed a typewriter’s keys. Welcome to Hell World is an unexpurgated selection of Luke O’Neil’s finest rants, near-poetic rhapsodies, and investigatory journalism. Racism, sexism, immigration, unemployment, Marcus Aurelius, opioid addiction, Iraq: all are processed through the O’Neil grinder. He details failings in his own life and in those he observes around him: and the result is a book that is at once intensely confessional and an energetic, unforgettable condemnation of American mores. Welcome to Hell World is, in the author’s words, a “fever dream nightmare of reporting and personal essays from one of the lowest periods in our country in recent memory.” It is also a burning example of some of the best writing you’re likely to read anywhere.

Book Thick As Thieves

Download or read book Thick As Thieves written by Steve Geng and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir about two siblings who loved each other (sometimes); the thrill of the shoplift, the power of the written word, the agony of addiction, and the joy of someone who understands you and still stays true Steve Geng—thief, addict, committed member of Manhattan's criminal semi-elite—was a rhapsody in blue, all on his own. Women had a tendency to crack his head open. His sister? Also unusual: Veronica Geng wrote brilliantly eccentric pieces for The New Yorker, hung with rock stars and Pulitzer Prize winners, threw the occasional typewriter, fled intimacy. They were parallel universes, but when they converged, it was . . . memorable. Spanning decades of unresolved personal drama and rebellion, Steve Geng's memoir, Thick as Thieves, is the story of their lives, the bond between them, and all the things they shared. Raw, real, and funny, Geng follows his unique family history from Philadelphia to Paris, Greenwich Village to Riker's Island. We meet lovable, often treacherous characters (B.J. the Queen of Crime, Tina Brown). We hear the rants of the Geng's father, the Colonel; the malicious invective of publishing; the patter of hardened criminals. This is a memoir that will lift your spirit, kick you in the shins, and help you remember the person who understood you the most. Geng has made a lot of mistakes in his life. Thick as Thieves may just make up for them.

So when his grandfather takes him target shooting, he never realizes that he is rehearsing to assassinate President John F. Kennedy. The benefit of being born into a traditional Italian family means a secure future with all the trappings of life in America-unless the family is the Mafia. As Joseph is unwillingly thrust into a life of crime, he must perform dirty deeds as his grandfather's pawn and bids to win favor at the highest levels of organized crime. As he becomes immersed deeper and deeper into the thick of the Mafia's plans, it soon becomes apparent that they are grooming Joseph for something special. If it's true that once in the Mafia one is always bound to the Omert, Joseph must find a way out before it is too late.

Download or read book Here Taste This written by H Smith and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-01-23 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of metaphorical short stories created from bits of my life. When you have a negative experience, do you replay it over and over, allowing it to build upon itself, thereby magnifying those negative feelings? On the other hand, when you have a positive experience, do you replay that over and over, allowing it to build upon itself more and more feelings of joy? Do you find yourself attributing more aspects of good to the experience because of the uplifting feelings it brought to you? Couples who are in love often do this. In either case, the event is technically over with. Have you let those experiences go, or are you still living within them as if they were happening now? If the experience was negative, did you resolve it, or did you just bury it within the deep recesses of your mind, where it may be awakened from time to time in reaction to lifes continuing experiences? If it was positive, do you keep replaying it over and over as if there will be no more, thereby preventing yourself from creating and enjoying even better ones? Since the experiences, however you would describe them, have already happened, you can now rewrite the memory, or story, of any of them in a way that allows you to let them go using the information and understanding you have assimilated since then. If negative, you can take the bitter foods of those experiences, the spinach, turnips, and liver, then add spices and sauces of understanding, forgiveness, and love and let them pass out of your consciousness leaving you free to create a buffet of even more tasteful and delicious life experiences! The metaphorical foods that came my way may not have been ones I would have consciously chosen, yet I have now made them palatable adding value to my life and allowing me to let them go and move on. So can you. This is a portion of my buffet of stories. What are yours?

Book Blessed Experiences

Download or read book Blessed Experiences written by James E. Clyburn and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Shares lessons learned on his way from the Jim Crow South to a top spot on Capitol Hill . . . [a] remarkably candid new memoir” —NPR From his humble beginnings in Sumter, South Carolina, to his prominence on the Washington, D.C., political scene as the third highest-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, US Congressman James E. Clyburn has led an extraordinary life. In Blessed Experiences, Clyburn tells in his own inspirational words how an African American boy from the Jim Crow-era South was able to beat the odds to achieve great success and become, as President Barack Obama describes him, “one of a handful of people who, when they speak, the entire Congress listens.” Born in 1940 to a civic-minded beautician and a fundamentalist minister, Clyburn began his ascent to leadership at the age of twelve, when he was elected president of his National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) youth chapter. He broke barriers through peaceful protests and steadfast beliefs in equality and justice. As a civil rights leader at South Carolina State College, as human affairs commissioner under John C. West and three subsequent governors, and as South Carolina’s first African American congressman since 1897, Clyburn has established a long and impressive record of public leadership and advocacy for human rights, education, historic preservation, and economic development. Includes a foreword from Emmy Award–winning actress and the congressman’s longtime friend Alfre Woodard “Blessed Experiences has captured not just the history of this tireless leader’s more-than-four decades in public service, but also a sense of the times.” —Warren Buffett
