Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coast of Bohemia IN one of the old-fashioned books for children there was a story of the adventures of a cent (or perhaps that coin of older lineage, a penny) told by itself, which came into my mind when the publishers sug gested that the readers of a new edition of this book might like to know how it happened to be written. E promptly fancied the book speaking, and taking upon itself the burden of autobiography, which we none of us find very heavy; and no sooner had I done so than I began actually to hear from it in a narrative of much greater distinctness than I could have supplied for it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bohemia and Other Poems Bohemia And Other Poems. Bohemia. Where shall I go to find real, true Bohemia? Seek it not here, 'mid the glitter of gold; Wealth does not grow on the shores of Bohemia; Fame only lingers its realms to unfold. Who shall I find in the shades of Bohemia? Beings untinged by society's stern laws; Mortals whose aim is unfettered, pure nature, Heedless alike of earth's blame or applause. What shall I see in the land of Bohemia? Noble souls striving for freedom of thought; Wonderful units, with brains ever active, Brimful of hope, yet with cares ever fraught. Who are the natures who haunt true Bohemia? Those whose high souls from society rebel; Those whom the earth-hovering, narrow, vain natures Cannot control, yet they cannot dispel. It is bounded on the north by a sparse fringe of fashionables who live in mellow brick houses. It takes only a min ute to walk from the north to the south, but whether you pass the hotels - west, or choose the way past the Benedict - east, you have left New York and gone into that mythical spot called Greenwich Village. If I were asked by a dweller in one of these amiable pink abodes north What road to take to what its friends affectionately call The Village, I would be at a loss to point it out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case of Bohemia The war broke out over an attempt on the part of the Central States to lay down the law to Europe on a question in which the interests of other nations were known to be involved. For the Germans and Magyars, what was behind it was a problem of power, not of territory. Very soon, however, power came to be conceived in terms of territory. German and Magyar do minion was to be secured by cessions of land such as would for the future incapacitate their opponents. On the other hand, the nations repre sented by the Entente now naturally bethought themselves of their unredeemed lands remaining under German or Magyar rule; claims of nation ality, which for fear of war had been left dormant for generations or even centuries, sprang to life oncewar had broken out. The original Ger manicprogramme in the war was expansion all round; that of the Allied States was the attain ment of national unity. Book Madame Bohemia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Madame Bohemia Classic Reprint written by Francis Neilson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Madame Bohemia Battista Guarini's dive was a warm cellar near Bleeker Street, down a flight of eight narrow steps to swinging doors on the top step of a shorter flight; the doors, opening, showed a room which, though sixty feet long and thirty broad, was less than eight feet high; on each side were seven tables, and each table was flanked by four chairs. In the centre of the room stood a large stove, the pipe from which, suspended by wires, ran back half the length of the room to the kitchen chimney. Guarini said the ceiling was already black when he turned the cellar into a restaurant. Caricatures of political notorieties and of celebrated artists, and curious anatomical studies, were sketched by the aid of sticks and umbrellas on the ceiling, which in consequence had a reputation equal to that of Guarini's famous dinner. Twelve years ago, in New York, this was the favourite rendezvous of the hungry subjects of the Nine. Guarini said he was a descendant of the Italian poet who wrote "The Faithful Swain." No one doubted this, for Battista was worthy of any ancestor, poet or otherwise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
