Book excerpt: Any discussion of impurity behavior during neutral-beam injection in ISX-B is best formulated in terms of the distinctive differences observed between ohmically heated, co-injection, and counter-injection discharges. In ohmically heated discharges both the production and the transport of impurities depend upon whether the working gas is hydrogen or deuterium. The influx of oxygen is almost the same for both cases, but the influx of metals is about a factor of 3 larger in the deuterium discharges. These results are consistent with the picture that oxygen gets into the plasma mainly through some process of chemical detachment, but that the metals are produced by neutral-particle sputtering at the walls. This conclusion pertains to discharges that are kept centered in the vacuum chamber so that the plasma limiter interactions are minimized. Under this condition the ion temperature near the edge of the current column is apparently low enough that charged particle sputtering of the limiter is a relatively small effect.

Book excerpt: The Impurity Study Experiment (ISX-A) was a tokamak designed to study impurity sources, plasma-wall interactions, impurity behavior within the plasma, and related phenomena. An Auger electron spectrometer, attached to the tokamak by means of a UHV sample transfer system, has been the primary tool used for surface studies of the first wall. Stainless steel samples positioned at the wall edge were used to follow the progressive ''cleanup'' of the torus wall. Cleaning consisted of low energy hydrogen discharge plasmas and later titanium gettering. The principal contaminants initially were carbon, oxygen, and sulfur. As cleaning proceeded, the surface oxide layers were reduced to sub-stoichiometric levels, and the carbon deposits appeared to be converted to metallic carbides. The sulfur was largely removed. A decrease in the effective nuclear charge of the plasma could be correlated with these surface changes. Discharge cleaning reduced Z/sub eff/ from approx. 4 to 1.6 over a period of several months while titanium gettering produced values approaching 1.0.

The heavy ion beam probe is a unique tool for the measurement of potential in the plasma core in order to understand the role of the electric field in plasma confinement, including the mechanism of transition from low to high confinement regimes (L–H transition). This allows measurement of the steady-state profile of the plasma potential, and its use has been extended to include the measurement of quasi-monochromatic and broadband oscillating components, the turbulent-particle flux and oscillations of the electron density and poloidal magnetic field. Special emphasis is placed on the study of Geodesic Acoustic Modes and Alfvén Eigenmodes excited by energetic particles with experimental data sets. These experimental studies help to understand the link between broadband turbulent physics and quasi-coherent oscillations in devices with a rather different magnetic configuration. The book also compares spontaneous and biased transitions from low to high confinement regimes on both classes of closed magnetic traps (tokamak and stellarator) and highlights the common features in the behavior of electric potential and turbulence of magnetized plasmas. A valuable resource for physicists, postgraduates and students specializing in plasma physics and controlled fusion.
