Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improvisation for Classical, Fingerstyle, and Jazz Guitar - Creative Strategies, Technique and Theory: Is the product of over twenty five years experience as a professional musician and guitar tutor. Contains more than sixty exercises, in both standard notation and guitar tablature, ranging from simple, clear examples of the topics under discussion, to longer more complex sections of music that illustrate how these ideas can be developed. Suggests new techniques, and strategies, offering guitarists practical ideas for solo or group performance, recording, music exams, and expanding musical horizons. Demonstrates how to use improvisation as a universal way of making music, enabling Classical, Fingerstyle, and Jazz players to learn the essential skills to create sophisticated and rewarding improvised pieces. Places theory and practice in a much broader context, by including discussions on the historical development of improvisation, along with supplementary information on a wide range of inter-related literature and listening. Contains an extensive appendix showing how to adapt and apply the CAGED system, demonstrating how its five basic patterns can be transformed into hundreds of interlocking modes, scales, arpeggios and chords. www.paulcostelloguitar.co.uk www.facebook.com/pages/Paul-Costello-Guitar/328473160531215

Book The Art of Two Line Improvisation

Download or read book The Art of Two Line Improvisation written by Jimmy Wyble and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of etudes, written during the 1970's, was composed as a result of Jimmy Wyble's explorations into the musical worlds of counterpoint, harmony and chord melody improvisation for the jazz guitar. the right and left hand fingerings presented in this book were also developed as techniques needed to improvise jazz in two lines. Jimmy uses very standard jazz guitar chord shapes in these etudes; however, these shapes move through the harmony in lines rather than block chord structures. This broken chord technique creates a unique contrapuntal sound that separates Jimmy from the rest of the fingerstyle jazz guitar world. It is hoped that jazz and classical guitarists playing and working through these etudes will see many familiar chord shapes moving in new ways and creating new sounds. These new harmonic sounds combined with beautiful melodies will inspire any quitarist to new levels of musical creativity. Written in notation and tablature. 92 pages.

Book Inside Arabic Music

  • Author : Johnny Farraj
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-07-18

Download or read book Inside Arabic Music written by Johnny Farraj and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes hundreds of listeners cheer ecstatically at the same instant during a live concert by Egyptian diva Umm Kulthum? What is the unspoken language behind a taqsim (traditional instrumental improvisation) that performers and listeners implicitly know? How can Arabic music be so rich and diverse without resorting to harmony? Why is it so challenging to transcribe Arabic music from a recording? Inside Arabic Music answers these and many other questions from the perspective of two "insiders" to the practice of Arabic music, by documenting a performance culture and a know-how that is largely passed on orally. Arabic music has spread across the globe, influencing music from Greece all the way to India in the mid-20th century through radio and musical cinema, and global popular culture through Raqs Sharqi, known as "Bellydance" in the West. Yet despite its popularity and influence, Arabic music, and the maqam scale system at its heart, remain widely misunderstood. Inside Arabic Music de-mystifies maqam with an approach that draws theory directly from practice, and presents theoretical insights that will be useful to practitioners, from the beginner to the expert - as well as those interested in the related Persian, Central Asian, and Turkish makam traditions. Inside Arabic Music's discussion of maqam and improvisation widens general understanding of music as well, by bringing in ideas from Saussurean linguistics, network theory, and Lakoff and Johnson's theory of cognition as metaphor, with an approach parallel to Gjerdingen's analysis of Galant-period music - offering a lens into the deeper relationships among music, culture, and human community.
