Book Improving Wheats Selection Classic Reprint

Download or read book Improving Wheats Selection Classic Reprint written by N. A. Cobb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improving Wheats Selection Any variety can be improved by careful and methodical selection. This method has been in vogue for many ages, and it is to it that we largely owe the gradual improvement that has taken place not only in wheat but in all cultivated plants. There is still plenty of room for improvement, however, and in the present chapter, we point out in particular not only the possibilities ahead, but give plain directions that will enable anyone so inclined to follow up our suggestions. All artificially obtained varieties tend to deteriorate as soon as the care which produced them is withheld, so that even if it were no longer possible to improve the wheat-plant by selection, it would still behove us to practise careful selection for the purpose of keeping up the quality we have already secured. While it is true that selection can be carried on in the field as ordinarily cultivated, and that this is the method anciently practised and one that is still in vogue, we strongly recommend the putting aside of specially selected and specially tilled land for the growth of plants from which to select. Download or read book The Basis for the Improvement of American Wheats Classic Reprint written by Mark Alfred Carleton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Basis for the Improvement of American Wheats This work was continued, but in the meantime careful studies were being made in the several wheat districts with a view of determining the particular needs Of each. In some districts greater hardiness of winter sorts is required; in others, varieties with a particularly tena cions chaff; in others, stiffer straw; in others, drought resistance, and so on. Varieties bred for North Dakota and Minnesota are of no value for California, and the best varieties for Texas would be useless in Montana. But aside from these considerations a knowledge Of the different botanical groups of wheats is necessary, in order to have at command all the sources from which may be drawn the qualities required for different districts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Selection of Seed-Wheat In connection herewith it should be stated that the highest results can only be obtained when the seed is selected from pro ductive individual plants, and that under favorable conditions even small perfect seeds from productive plants may be better than large seeds from unproduc tive plants. The main influence of large grains selected by simple sieve grading. Will be in giving the plants a more Vigorous start in life, which of itself is of extreme importance. Other things being equal it is entirely fair to pre sume that the crops which are placed under the most. Favorable environment are going to give the best returns. It has been shown that, m general, the more vigor ous plants (that is, those having the largest spikelets) contain the larger grains, so that even: in selecting the grains by simple Sieve separation the bulk of the larger grains would come from the more vigorous plants, and thus there would be, in a measure at least, a selection from vigorous plants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milling Tests of Wheat; New Varieties of Cereals: Evidence of Dr. Charles E. Saunders, Experimentalist, Dominion Experimental Farms; Before the Select Standing Committee on Agriculture and Colonization, 1905 Besides improving wheat, we have of course endeavoured to improve our varieties, by cressing and selection, and this work has given rise to a number of new sorts. I have referred already to the introduction of Ladoga wheat, and to the crosses which were made between that variety and Red and White Fife, the object being to combine, as far as possible, the quality of the Fife wheats with the earliness of the Ladoga. Among these cross-bred sorts Preston, Stanley, Huron, and Percy are attracting most attention, and I have here samples of the our of two or three of these varieties. Powers’s beautifully realized final work, is a comic foray into the commercialized wilderness of modern American life. Its hero, Joe Hackett, is a high school track star who sets out to be a saint. But seminary life and priestly apprenticeship soon damp his ardor, and by the time he has been given a parish of his own he has traded in his hair shirt for the consolations of baseball and beer. Meanwhile Joe’s higher-ups are pressing for an increase in profits from the collection plate, suburban Inglenook’s biggest business wants to launch its new line of missiles with a blessing, and not all that far away, in Vietnam, a war is going on. Joe wants to duck and cover, but in the end, almost in spite of himself, he is condemned to do something right. J. F. Powers was a virtuoso of the American language with a perfect ear for the telling clich? and an unfailing eye for the kitsch that clutters up our lives. This funny and very moving novel about the making and remaking of a priest is one of his finest achievements.

This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Varieties, Properties, and Classification of Wheat This little w'ork On the Varieties, Properties, and Classification of Wheat, by John Le Couteur, Esq., Colonel of the let Regiment of Jersey Militia, and aide-de-camp to the King, 1836) should. Be in the possession of every cultivator of wheat. We do not regard itas exaggeration to say that it will do more for the agriculture of the empire than has been effected by all the societies instituted for the purposes of agricultural improvement put together. Colonel Le Couteur has struck into the right path, and not only has exhibited that care and discrimination which alone Can render the culture of wheat com pletely successful, but has pointed out the means by which all the Cerealia may be managed with the fullest benefit to the grov'ver and to the public. To our surprise he has dedicated his work to the Central Agricultural Association of Great Britain and Ireland - an Association evidently not brought together on the principles on which our author's experiments have been founded; but for the purpose of keeping up rent unjustly, and tampering with the currency to effect that end; deeming the filling of landlords' pockets at the expense of the tenantry a fit object for legislative interference. Our author is a member of the Association and it is astonishing that he should address it with adulation while its objects are purelyselfish, and his own to bring about amelioration in the only manner that is rational-via, by select ing and improving the best varieties of corn, and cultivating them in the most economical manner. Book How to Increase the Yield of Wheat in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Increase the Yield of Wheat in California Classic Reprint written by George Wright Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-18 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Increase the Yield of Wheat in California Fig. 1.4birdseye View of California Cereal Station, Sacramento Valley. Fig. 2. - Genera1 view of grain plats on the Tulare Station, 1908. The investigations covered by this report are in general based. Upon results and observations covering a long period. For a limited time a portion of the work was conducted in co-operation with the Bureau of Plant Industry of the United States Department of Agriculture. Both the field and laboratory investigations have covered a wide range. They embrace the relative value of deep vs. Shallow plowing, early vs. Late seeding, drill vs. Broadcast seeding, trials with fertil izers, the effect of certain rotation schemes, the improvement of the soil through green-manuring, moisture conservation, the treatment of. Grain for the prevention of smut, the value of exchanging seed, clean ing the land from weeds both by cultural methods and the use of chemical sprays, and finally, variety trials and the development of better types of grain than those commonly grown. In the study of the general question of environmental influence upon the quality of wheat, and also the selection work involving an increase of the gluten content, there has of course been a large amount of chemical work required. Questions involved along these lines have been the influence upon the gluten content of the length of the growing period, of the time of harvest, of the time of seeding, of the time the wheat plant receives its moisture, the influence of sunshine and of the composition of the soil. The environmental question as affecting the gluten content will be the theme of a separate report. In this report an effort has been made to so correlate the cultural results and observations that they may be of immediate benefit to the California grain growers, in effecting improvement in soil fertility, increasing the yield of grain, and. Improving the milling quality of the grain produced. It should be said that these results should be considered as simply the foundation for more extensive work. The element of time is an all-essential one for the solution of such problems as these. This would be true even though the problem was merely the develop ment of grain giving higher yields, but, with the introduction of the problem of increasing the gluten content, the element of time is of even greater importance. Book The Farmer s Guide Or a Treatise on the Improvement of Wheat

Download or read book The Farmer s Guide Or a Treatise on the Improvement of Wheat written by Thomas B. Lord and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer's Guide, or a Treatise on the Improvement of Wheat: Designed to Instruct the Farmer in Selecting His Seed, Increasing Its Fertility, Preventing Its Degenerating, or Restoring Its Former Vigor if It "Runs Out" The degeneracy of our soil and the best strength and fertility of our seed should admonish every farmer that something should be done to strengthen our Seed and Improve our Land! If I shall succeed in arousing the energies of the farmer to act on this subject, the importance of which is desirable, I shall feel that I have done something for the benefit of the tillers of the soil and for amelioration of the condition of our race, while I am called upon to pay the debt of nature. In Western New York, formerly one of the best wheat growing sections in the United States, when the soil was rich and the seed strong, Gen. Mills, of Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., raised 47 11-60 bushels of wheat per acre on 80 acres of land; Simon McKinzie, of Caledonia, same county, raised 50 bushels per acre; Capt. Scott, of Covington, Wyoming Co., raised 50 bushels per acre. True, these were extreme cases, but 30, 35 and 40 bushels per acre were not uncommon. Even at a later day, about 1850, Wm. Hotchkiss, of Lewiston, Niagara Co., raised 631/2 bushels per acre on 63/4 acres of land; Samuel L. Thompson, of Setauket. L. I., raised 42 bushels and 10 quarts by measure, or 44 bushels and 24 quarts by weight per acre; Justus White, of Parmelia, Jeff. Co., N. Y., raised 40 bushels and 2 pecks per acre. These were premium crops, but even much better crops were raised then than we get now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Wheat Investigations Vol 1 written by Jacob Zinn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wheat Investigations, Vol. 1: Pure Lines In 1915 several hundred wheat spikes were selected from commercial varieties representing the chief groups of hard red spring wheat. Of these selections 259 heads were retained and each grown in a row in the cereal crop nursery in 1916. In the following year 91 strains of the original selections were grown in one two-thousandth acre plots, along with 7 pure strains introduced from Minnesota. The crop from the one two thousandth acre plots furnished enough seed to make a chemi cal determination of the crude protein content of each strain. In 1918 only 44 pure lines selected from Aroostook wheats and 6 lines of Minnesota wheats were retained and grown in plots ranging from one two-hundredth to one-fortieth acre in area. A complete chemical analysis of the wheat and flour of 37 lines and a baking test of 31 lines were made in the spring of 1919. Under the same conditions of environment the pure lines of wheat showed distinct differences in the physical and chemi cal characteristics and in the bread making value or their grain.
