Book Fiber Matrix Interface Studies on Electron Beam Cured Composites

Download or read book Fiber Matrix Interface Studies on Electron Beam Cured Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recently completed Department of Energy (DOE) and industry sponsored Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) entitled, ''Electron Beam Curing of Polymer Matrix Composites, '' determined that the interlaminar shear strength properties of the best electron beam cured IM7/epoxy composites were 19-28% lower than autoclave cured IM7/epoxy composites (i.e. IM7/977-2 and IM7/977-3). Low interlaminar shear strength is widely acknowledged as the key barrier to the successful acceptance and implementation of electron beam cured composites in the aircraft/aerospace industry. The objective of this work was to improve the interlaminar shear strength properties of electron beam cured composites by formulating and evaluating several different fiber sizings or coating materials. The researchers have recently achieved some promising results by having discovered that the application of epoxy-based, electron beam compatible sizings or coatings onto surface-treated, unsized IM7 carbon fibers improved the composite interlaminar shear strength properties by as much as 55% versus composites fabricated from surface-treated, unsized IM7 fibers. In addition, by applying these same epoxy-based sizings or coatings onto surface-treated, unsized IM7 fibers it was possible to achieve an 11% increase in the composite interlaminar shear strength compared to composites made from surface-treated, GP-sized IM7 fibers. Work is continuing in this area of research to further improve these properties.

Book A Characterization of the Interfacial and Interlaminar Properties of Carbon Nanotube Modified Carbon Fiber epoxy Composites

Download or read book A Characterization of the Interfacial and Interlaminar Properties of Carbon Nanotube Modified Carbon Fiber epoxy Composites written by Ryan James Sager and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical characterization of the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of carbon nanotube (CNT) coated carbon fibers and the interlaminar fracture toughness of woven fabric carbon fiber/epoxy composites toughened with CNT/epoxy interleave films is presented. The deposition of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) onto the surface of carbon fibers through thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was used in an effort to produce a graded, multifunctional interphase region used to improve the interfacial strength between the matrix and the reinforcing fiber. Characterization of the IFSS was performed using the single-fiber fragmentation test. It is shown that the application of a MWCNT coating improves the interfacial shear strength between the coated fiber and matrix when compared with uncoated fibers. The effect of CNT/epoxy thin interleave films on the Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of woven fabric carbon/epoxy composites is examined using the double-cantilever beam (DCB) test. Initiation fracture toughness, represented by critical strain energy release rate (GIC), is shown to improve over standard un-toughened composites using amine-functionalized CNT/epoxy thin films. Propagation fracture toughness is shown to remain unaffected using amine-functionalized CNT/epoxy thin films with respect to standard un-toughened composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive single volume handbook covers every aspect of reinforcement science, from hands-on subjects, such as manual 'lay-up' processing, to theoretical discussions concerning rheology and modeling. Taken from the recently published six volume International Encyclopedia of Composites, this reference volume offers scholarly and practical knowledge of distinguished industry-experts, academics, and government researchers in one accessible and informative handbook. Fibers, processes, and composite reinforcement types, as well as relevant miscellaneous subjects such as property relationships, manufacturing, hybrid reinforcements, and modeling are given detailed treatment. Engineers, materials scientists, and technologists will find the Composite Reinforcement Handbook an invaluable tool.

Book Bonding of Amines to Carbon Fiber Surfaces to Improve and Control Adhesion A New Paradigm for Adhesion in Carbon Fiber Epoxy Composite Materials

Download or read book Bonding of Amines to Carbon Fiber Surfaces to Improve and Control Adhesion A New Paradigm for Adhesion in Carbon Fiber Epoxy Composite Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe the immobilization of amines at the surfaces of high-modulus, pitch-based carbon fibers via direct, thermal reaction of the amine with the carbon fiber. Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) and electrochemical measurements are used to demonstrate the immobilization. The influence of these reactions on the interfacial adhesion in carbon fiber-epoxy composite materials is investigated by using these fibers to fabricate composite test specimens with EPON-828 epoxy, and then using an embedded single fiber test to measure the interfacial shear strength between fiber and matrix for fibers that had been derivatized with didecylamine, dodecylamine, 1,9-diaminononane or 1,6-diaminohexane. A rational dependence of interfacial adhesion on the molecular structure of the immobilized amine is revealed. Further, by examining the interfacial shear strength in composites made from carbon fibers that had been derivatized with a mixture of amines, we demonstrate that by judicious choice of the relative amounts of these adhesion-controlling reagents in the derivatization mixture, it is possible to control the interfacial composition, thereby controlling the interfacial adhesion.
