Book Improving the Analytic Contribution of Advanced Warfighting Experiments

Download or read book Improving the Analytic Contribution of Advanced Warfighting Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study is to help the Army get the maximum analytic contribution from Advanced Warfighting Experiments (AWEs)-or future similar analysis efforts involving combinations of live, virtual, and constructive simulations. This research extends and demonstrates the framework for credible analysis using Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS). The "Credible Uses" (CU) framework was one product of previous research documented in Dewar et al. (1996). A key component of the CU approach is that it explicitly links experiments to decisions. In what follows we describe an example of how this framework would be applied, using for concreteness the context of an Advanced Warfighting Experiment (AWE) named Focused Dispatch (FD). The Focused Dispatch and other AWEs are really a series of experiments. Most of the experiments are constructive and virtual. The AWEs, including FD, often culminate in a live training exercise (analysis experiment). Our exemplar analysis was conducted in parallel to the actual analysis done as part of Focused Dispatch. It is notional and addresses only a small portion of the issues being studied in Focused Dispatch. The challenge of Focused Dispatch and other AWEs is that of credible analysis using (a) models that are only weakly predictive of the results that would occur in real combat and (b) data that come from single or rare events. That is, model outcomes are not reliable enough to be considered quantitative predictions of potential real-world outcomes with known uncertainties. AWEs and similar efforts are instrumental to the Army's efforts to support the development of Force XXI. Therefore, the Army will face these challenges repeatedly in the coming years.

Book Analytical Methods for Studies and Experiments on Transforming the Force

Download or read book Analytical Methods for Studies and Experiments on Transforming the Force written by Paul K. Davis and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1999 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Defense is motivated by both opportunities and necessity to transform the force over the years ahead by exploiting modern technology and operational concepts associated with the revolution in military affairs, and by making related organizational changes. This documented briefing provides a background review describing a broad transformation strategy, then discusses and illustrates how analysis supported by models and simulations (including gaming) can supplement and guide empirical work such as joint experiments. The approach is illustrated for the problem of halting an invading army, with long-range precision fires playing a major role. A great deal of insight about the general problem can be obtained from analysis at different levels of resolution with a family of models. This process, in turn, identifies important kinds of information that can be obtained only from empirical work such as joint field experiments. The recommended

Book The Role of Experimentation in Building Future Naval Forces

Download or read book The Role of Experimentation in Building Future Naval Forces written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-01-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Defense is in the process of transforming the nation's armed forces to meet the military challenges of the 21st century. Currently, the opportunity exists to carry out experiments at individual and joint service levels to facilitate this transformation. Experimentation, which involves a spectrum of activities including analyses, war games, modeling and simulation, small focused experiments, and large field events among other things, provides the means to enhance naval and joint force development. To assist the Navy in this effort, the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) asked the National Research Council (NRC) to conduct a study to examine the role of experimentation in building future naval forces to operate in the joint environment. The NRC formed the Committee for the Role of Experimentation in Building Future Naval Forces to perform the study.

Book Research Methods for Advanced Warfighting Experiments

Download or read book Research Methods for Advanced Warfighting Experiments written by Carl W. Lickteig and published by . This book was released on 1996-08-01 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Warfighting Experiments (AWEs) typify the Army's emerging need for more pragmatic and responsive research methods to address the changing climate of military research and improve future force capability. Formative force improvement enables or mediates the summative objective--a more capable force. To help achieve the primary objective, this report recommends the AWEs adapt formative evaluation methods that focus on exploration, explanation, and improvement. This report identifies a set of key fundamental and formative method issues for the AWEs and provides corresponding method recommendations for more reliable and useful AWE findings. The report's method recommendations embed a mechanism of expanded AWE evaluation teams that implement lessons learned into "living products" for Army-wide Force XXI efforts.

Book Human Dimensions Assessment of the Task Force XXI Advanced Warfighter Experiment

Download or read book Human Dimensions Assessment of the Task Force XXI Advanced Warfighter Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This human dimensions assessment quantified the impact of changes in the work environment of soldiers and leaders who participated in the brigade level task force (TF XXI) Advanced Warfighter Experiment (AWE). The TF XXI AWE investigated the potential for digitizing land combat forces through the fielding of new technology equipment and accompanying changes in organizational design, tactics, techniques and procedures. Surveys and structured interviews were used to assess soldier and leader perceptions of TF XXI, the work environment, and organizational outcomes. The major finding is that as soldiers and leaders became more familiar with the new technology and its use, they were less threatened by it, and appreciated more the positive impact it would have on them, their units, and the Army as a whole. The findings also underscore potential problems with a number of different but clearly interrelated human dimensions. One example is the new career opportunities created by this technology within but also outside the Army, and the possible impact of these opportunities on Army wide personnel retention and recruitment programs. This study contributes to the requirement to define, quantify, and record empirical information to more fully understand and respond to the human dimensions of the Force XXI program." -- Stinet.

Book A Guide for Analysis Using Advanced Distributed Simulation ADS

Download or read book A Guide for Analysis Using Advanced Distributed Simulation ADS written by Thomas Lucas and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1997 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to assist those in the vanguard of using Advanced Distributed Simulation (ADS) for analysis. The report discusses a broad range of issues critical to successful ADS supported analyses. Major topic areas include potential ADS analysis strengths and weaknesses, the role ADS might play within a broader analysis strategy, experimental design, exercise preparation and management, and post-exercise analysis. Because it is impossible to comprehensively treat all of these subjects, we emphasize the breadth of analysis issues over depth in their coverage with references to more detailed resources. Furthermore, the depth of coverage is highly variable. The greatest detail is provided on the roles of ADS in the analysis process and in experimental design.
