Book Improving Steam Turbine Performance at a Steel Mill

Download or read book Improving Steam Turbine Performance at a Steel Mill written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bethlehem Steel Corporation (BSC), the second largest producer of steel in the United States, needed to improve the performance of a steam turbine generator at its Burns Harbour facility in Indiana. As part of the US Department of Energy's Steam Challenge Programme, BSC significantly increased the efficiency and capacity of its steam turbine generator system by: rebuilding the turbine to incorporate the latest steam path technology; using a portion of the warm condenser cooling water exhaust stream (rather than cool lake water) for boiler feedwater makeup; admitting low pressure steam directly into the turbine.

Book Evaluating and Improving Steam Turbine Performance

Download or read book Evaluating and Improving Steam Turbine Performance written by K. C. Cotton and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an excellent example of the practical application of thermodynamics & fluid flow fundamentals to the solution of performance problems in power plants. Current design practices & methods for testing steam turbines & interpreting the test results are presented. This book concentrates on measuring turbine & cycle-component performance & on calculating the effects that measured deviations from design values (e.g., increased steam-path clearances, blade deposits, or solid particle erosion) have on turbine efficiency. In an impressive array of examples, measured performance & current design data are compared to quantify performance losses. Then, using these measurements & deductive reasoning, the book pinpoints problem areas that help identify the nature of the deficiency & proposes remedial action. This book develops a better appreciation for optimum turbine design which enables the evaluation of proposed efficiency improvements. It also quantifies the effect of power plant operation (abnormal conditions) on turbine efficiency, throttle flow & stage pressures. The revised edition includes chapters on co-generation & combind cycles. This book was written for engineers responsible for the efficient operation of electric utilities, power plants & cogeneration plants. Review questions have been provided so that this material may be used as a textbook or reference book in colleges & universities. To order: Cotton Fact Inc., 346 Kingsley Rd., Burnt Hills, NY 12027. Book Cool Companies

Download or read book Cool Companies written by Joseph J. Romm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Cool Companies' turns on its head the idea that measures to avert global warming and climate change will pile massive costs on to the industrial sector. It shows how the smartest companies have been able to make money through the improvements that reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Industry is going to have to adjust to the new tax and regulatory regimes being introduced around the world, aimed at reducing emissions and meeting internationally agreed targets. The more far-sighted companies have recognised the opportunities this offers. Joseph Romm shows how successful they have been in taking them. Romm profiles more than 50 companies, and describes their experiences in the context of their corporate strategies. All are leaders in their sectors and many are household names such as Xerox, Toyota, BP (now BP Amoco), DuPont, Compaq and 3M. They grasped early on the strategic importance of cutting emissions. By working to do so, through increased efficiency, new technologies and improved processes, they have cut their energy costs and boosted their productivity, often dramatically - improvements which translate straight down to the bottom line. The message is clear. Cool Companies - those prepared to overhaul their policies and innovate - are much more likely to thrive in the new climate for business, while those which have to be dragged backwards into the future will face higher costs and tougher competition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal power plants are one of the most important process industries for engineering professionals. Over the past few decades, the power sector has been facing a number of critical issues. However, the most fundamental challenge is meeting the growing power demand in sustainable and efficient ways. Practicing power plant engineers not only look after operation and maintenance of the plant, but also look after a range of activities, including research and development, starting from power generation, to environmental assessment of power plants. The book Thermal Power Plants covers features, operational issues, advantages, and limitations of power plants, as well as benefits of renewable power generation. It also introduces thermal performance analysis, fuel combustion issues, performance monitoring and modelling, plants health monitoring, including component fault diagnosis and prognosis, functional analysis, economics of plant operation and maintenance, and environmental aspects. This book addresses several issues related to both coal fired and gas turbine power plants. The book is suitable for both undergraduate and research for higher degree students, and of course, for practicing power plant engineers.
