Book Improving Software Practice

Download or read book Improving Software Practice written by Colin Tully and published by . This book was released on 1998-11-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving Software Practice Case Experiences Edited by Colin Tully Colin Tully Associates, UK The software process is a business-critical process for many organizations. For them, improving software practice is both an imperative and a continuing challenge, to achieve success and even survival. This applies whether the organization develops software as its main business, embeds software in its products, or depends on software to underpin its business operations. This book presents case histories of eight very different organizations, each engaged in improving its software practice. Each organization has made its own individual evaluation of where its improvement priority lies, but they all share common experiences of what must be done in order to succeed in improving practice. Any software manager or practitioner facing the need for improvement will learn from these real-life stories, recounted by those who have been there already, seen the opportunities, and struggled with the problems. No two companies are the same, or should adopt a standard approach; but there are common lessons to be shared, and this book exposes many of those common lessons in a way that is both readable and convincing. This book documents the following: * Eight case studies that give an insight into software process improvement in the business environment * Experience from various aspects of software process improvement * Coverage of all parts of the complete software lifecycle. Produced and funded within the framework of the ESSI initiative of the European Commission is Programme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For any software developer who has spent days in “integration hell,” cobbling together myriad software components, Continuous Integration: Improving Software Quality and Reducing Risk illustrates how to transform integration from a necessary evil into an everyday part of the development process. The key, as the authors show, is to integrate regularly and often using continuous integration (CI) practices and techniques. The authors first examine the concept of CI and its practices from the ground up and then move on to explore other effective processes performed by CI systems, such as database integration, testing, inspection, deployment, and feedback. Through more than forty CI-related practices using application examples in different languages, readers learn that CI leads to more rapid software development, produces deployable software at every step in the development lifecycle, and reduces the time between defect introduction and detection, saving time and lowering costs. With successful implementation of CI, developers reduce risks and repetitive manual processes, and teams receive better project visibility. The book covers How to make integration a “non-event” on your software development projects How to reduce the amount of repetitive processes you perform when building your software Practices and techniques for using CI effectively with your teams Reducing the risks of late defect discovery, low-quality software, lack of visibility, and lack of deployable software Assessments of different CI servers and related tools on the market The book’s companion Web site, www.integratebutton.com, provides updates and code examples.

Book Learning to Improve Software Processes Making Sense of Practice

Download or read book Learning to Improve Software Processes Making Sense of Practice written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software Process Improvement (SPI) programs are frequently considered to be planned in nature. However, there is recent evidence to suggest that SPI can be understood as a form of learning. Drawing on the organizational learning literature this paper proposes an active learning perspective of improvements in processes. This view recognizes the various actors in the project to be reflective in their actions, making sense of the current context and thus designing their use of the process to best suit their needs at the time. The changes in the processes emerge through ongoing adjustments, experimentation and improvisation as developers and managers seek to improve their product development.

Book Improving the Adoption of Software Engineering Practices Through Persuasive Interventions

Download or read book Improving the Adoption of Software Engineering Practices Through Persuasive Interventions written by Leif-Gerrit Singer and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software engineering practices and methodologies can improve software quality and developer productivity. However, they are not always adopted by developers, even when mandated by an organization. There can be different reasons for this: missing motivation, peer pressure, or perceived complexity can prevent successful adoption. This dissertation provides an approach to improve the adoption of software engineering practices by developers that uses non-coercive means. As an augmentation to mandating practices, it uses persuasive, software-based interventions that can facilitate creativity, autonomy, and other crucial factors in software development. To support organizations in designing such interventions, the thesis provides a catalog of adoption patterns: abstract solutions to adoption problems. A systematic and iterative process provides guidance in the application of these patterns to an organization's situation. An evaluation shows that the process and the adoption patterns are effective.

Book Model Driven Software Engineering in Practice

Download or read book Model Driven Software Engineering in Practice written by Marco Brambilla and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses how model-based approaches can improve the daily practice of software professionals. This is known as Model-Driven Software Engineering (MDSE) or, simply, Model-Driven Engineering (MDE). MDSE practices have proved to increase efficiency and effectiveness in software development, as demonstrated by various quantitative and qualitative studies. MDSE adoption in the software industry is foreseen to grow exponentially in the near future, e.g., due to the convergence of software development and business analysis. The aim of this book is to provide you with an agile and flexible tool to introduce you to the MDSE world, thus allowing you to quickly understand its basic principles and techniques and to choose the right set of MDSE instruments for your needs so that you can start to benefit from MDSE right away. The book is organized into two main parts. The first part discusses the foundations of MDSE in terms of basic concepts (i.e., models and transformations), driving principles, application scenarios, and current standards, like the well-known MDA initiative proposed by OMG (Object Management Group) as well as the practices on how to integrate MDSE in existing development processes. The second part deals with the technical aspects of MDSE, spanning from the basics on when and how to build a domain-specific modeling language, to the description of Model-to-Text and Model-to-Model transformations, and the tools that support the management of MDSE projects. The second edition of the book features: a set of completely new topics, including: full example of the creation of a new modeling language (IFML), discussion of modeling issues and approaches in specific domains, like business process modeling, user interaction modeling, and enterprise architecture complete revision of examples, figures, and text, for improving readability, understandability, and coherence better formulation of definitions, dependencies between concepts and ideas addition of a complete index of book content In addition to the contents of the book, more resources are provided on the book's website http://www.mdse-book.com, including the examples presented in the book.

Book Managing the Change Software Configuration and Change Management

Download or read book Managing the Change Software Configuration and Change Management written by Michael Haug and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. Amting Directorate General Information Society, European Commission, Brussels th Under the 4 Framework of European Research, the European Systems and Soft ware Initiative (ESSI) was part of the ESPRIT Programme. This initiative funded more than 470 projects in the area of software and system process improvements. The majority of these projects were process improvement experiments carrying out and taking up new development processes, methods and technology within the software development process of a company. In addition, nodes (centres of exper tise), European networks (organisations managing local activities), training and dissemination actions complemented the process improvement experiments. ESSI aimed at improving the software development capabilities of European enterprises. It focused on best practice and helped European companies to develop world class skills and associated technologies to build the increasingly complex and varied systems needed to compete in the marketplace. The dissemination activities were designed to build a forum, at European level, to exchange information and knowledge gained within process improvement ex periments. Their major objective was to spread the message and the results of experiments to a wider audience, through a variety ofdifferent channels. The European Experience Exchange (tUR~X) project has been one ofthese dis semination activities within the European Systems and Software Initiative.~UR~X has collected the results of practitioner reports from numerous workshops in Europe and presents, in this series of books, the results of Best Practice achieve ments in European Companies over the last few years.
