Book Improving Schools by Standardized Tests Classic Reprint

Download or read book Improving Schools by Standardized Tests Classic Reprint written by Samuel S. Brooks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improving Schools by Standardized Tests Among the more recent ideas there are some that seem pregnant with tremendous possibilities for the improve ment of educational procedure. The most far-reaching in its beneficial possibilities seems to me to be the idea Of measuring the results of teaching and the intelligence of school children by means Of standardized tests. Of large importance also are: The Socialized Recitation, Supervised Study, Teaching Children how to Study, The project-problem Method in Teaching, and the change Of emphasis from oral to silent reading. All these things are rich with promise of greater efficiency in education. But although all the above-mentioned ideas have proved successful, when carried out by trained men and women full Of enthusiasm and thoroughly under standing the psychological principles upon which the ideas were based, nevertheless, when the carrying-out of these same ideas has been attempted by persons lacking in sympathy and full understanding of the principles, aims, and methods involved, they have Often been far from successful. Superintendents and teachers who condemn these ideas, after proving to their own satisfaction that they are worth less, remind me Of the first farmer in the town Of my boy hood to purchase a mowing machine. For a great many years this man had mowed his many rough and rather rocky acres by hand with the help Of a large crew Of hired men. But one spring the mowing-machine agent appeared in our town and as a result, by the time hay was ready to be cut, the farmer found himself possessed Of a brand-new mowing machine, resplendent in green, yellow, and red. The next morning he started out to mow the back field. Truly his trials that day were many. And when the machine, unable to stand any more Of his inexpert han dling, broke down late in the afternoon, he had succeeded in getting over only about as much ground as one good man with scythe and snath could have mowed in the same length of time. And what an untidy-looking job it was! The next day the farmer started his Old crew to mowing by hand. N 0 more Of that mowing machine for him. He could do more and better work in a day alone than could a man with a pair Of horses and a mowing machine. The mowing machine was a failure. He knew because he had tried it. But did this farmer's experience with his new mowing machine prove the failure Of the machine or the failure Of the man? The mowing machine, we know, will do good and rapid work in astonishingly rough and rocky ground when guided by a practiced hand. Book The Fifteenth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education Vol 1

Download or read book The Fifteenth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education Vol 1 written by G. D. Strayer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fifteenth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education, Vol. 1: Standards and Tests for the Measurement of the Efficiency of Schools and School Systems In the pages which follow, the Committee on Standards and Tests Of the National Council of Education presents a series of reports pre pared by its own members and by others who have, upon invitation of the committee, been willing to contribute results Of their study or investigation. The committee feels that these reports furnish most satisfactory evidence Of the progress which has been made in the field of educational measurement during the past few years. The papers of the several contributors may, in general, be classified as contributing (i) to the derivation of scales or units of measurement, and (2) to the application of such units or scales of measurement as have been derived in the field Of educational administration or supervision. In printing, the papers have been grouped as indicated above. It seems unnecessary with this report in hand to argue in favor of the use of the more precise methods of measurement which have recently been developed. Those interested in the improvement of our schools have always attempted by some method or other to estimate the effi ciency of individual schools or school systems. Often this measurement has been based upon an Opinion not acceptable to another student or investigator, and not frequently upon attempts to measure which have been extremely crude. The examination system as we have commonly had it, not only has been responsible for judgments with respect to the efficiency of schools, or Of school systems, but has also determined in very considerable measure in most school systems the progress of children. In the studies which are reported here, more precise measures give to the student of education a better basis in knowledge of conditions upon which to base his criticism or to develop his improved method Of instruction or administration. The measurement Of results of any sort, whether of the achievements in School subjects, of the cost of any unit or function, or of the rate of progress, and the like, furnishes primarily a knowledge of the situation which makes clear the problems involved, and which may suggest a method of experiment that looks toward the improvement desired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Tests for Use in High Schools, Third Revision The actual, administration of standardized tests. T o carry out a successful and profitable testing program it is not only necessary that the tests employed be selected in View of the desired results and Of the criteria named above, but also that they be properly given and scored, and the results correctly interpreted. In connection with the giving and scoring Of tests, the one point needing emphasis above all others is that those giving them should follow, without variation, the directions accompanying the tests. Such directions can often be improved upon, but it is not the place of the tester to make changes, since this will pre vent the results Obtained from being strictly comparable with those secured by others who have employed the same test. The directions accompanying some tests are not complete. If these are to be used, those who are to give and score them should examine enough other similar tests or treatises on tests to find what is the accepted procedure for each Of the points in question and then follow this procedure. Book Intelligence Tests and School Reorganization Classic Reprint

Download or read book Intelligence Tests and School Reorganization Classic Reprint written by Lewis M. Terman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intelligence Tests and School Reorganization This book is in no sense an inventory of the important experiments now going on in the United States in connection with the use of intelligence and educational tests. Such an inventory would have required entirely too much space and would have involved an amount of repetition which could not have been other than tedious. Instead, experiments have been selected which are typical of the leading methods of readjustment now being attempted in different parts of the country. All of them illustrate important types of procedure, but involve varying degrees of generality. At one extreme is the Oakland plan, described by Dr. Dickson, which affects the entire school enrollment and the entire administrative system. At the other is the work of Dr. Fernald, which concerns itself primarily with individual cases of maladjustment and has to do with pedagogical method rather than school organization. Between these extremes is the Los Angeles work, described by Dr. Sutherland. The latter, although originally intended to meet the needs of individual misfits, has resulted in the working out of methods of individual instruction which appear to have applicability with children in general. The chapter by Dr. Franzen illustrates in a most interesting way how the results of intelligence and educational tests can be combined so as to serve as a better basis for rating the performance of pupils and the efficiency of schools. The chapter by Superintendent Tupper shows how much can be done, even in a small city and without elaborate reorganization, to improve the classification of children. Book Contradictions of School Reform

Download or read book Contradictions of School Reform written by Linda McNeil and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parents and community activists around the country complain that the education system is failing our children. They point to students' failure to master basic skills, even as standardized testing is widely employed in efforts to improve the educational system. Contradictions of Reform is a provocative look into the reality, for students as well as teachers, of standardized testing. A detailed account of how student improvement and teacher effectiveness are evaluated, Contradictions of Reform argues compellingly that the preparation of students for standardized tests engenders teaching methods that vastly compromise the quality of education.

Download or read book Educational Tests for Use in Elementary Schools Classic Reprint written by Walter S. Monroe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Tests for Use in Elementary Schools An intelligent attitude toward educational tests. For several years the use of educational tests has been urged with much enthusiasm and eloquence by a very large number of those who have contributed to our educational periodicals, as well as by many of those who have addressed educational gatherings. Recently a more critical attitude has developed toward these measuring instruments. Attention is being called to their defects and limitations. As a result some people may be in doubt concerning the attitude which they should maintain. There is no question that when properly used educational tests become valuable instruments in the hands of teachers and supervisors but it should always be remembered that they are imperfect instruments. The measures of ability which they yield involve errors which in some cases arc sufficiently large to lead to erroneous conclusions. In order that the greatest good may result from the use of educational tests one should avoid the uncritical belief that the measures which they yield arc highly accurate and reliable. On the other hand one should bear in mind that in general they yield more accurate information than can be secured through other sources. A prerequisite for intelligent selection of a test for school use. A prerequisite for an intelligent selection of an educational test for use in a school is a definite plan for using the information which it yields. One reason for this is that tests differ in function. Some of the tests enumerated in the following list have a general survey function; others arc diagnostic; some are power tests; but others arc rate tests. Unless a test is selected whose function is in agreement with one's' purpose, it is likely that the time and money invested in the testing will fail to yield adequate returns. Another reason is that the absence of a well defined plan frequently results in no use being made of the scores obtained on the test. The number of cases in which a test has been given and the results filed away without having been used is surprisingly large. One should not undertake the giving of any educational test merely because other people arc doing it. Unless it appears likely that the test will function as an instrument to increase the effectiveness of instruction or the organization of the school, its administration should not be undertaken.
