Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans believe that people who lack health insurance somehow get the care they really need. Care Without Coverage examines the real consequences for adults who lack health insurance. The study presents findings in the areas of prevention and screening, cancer, chronic illness, hospital-based care, and general health status. The committee looked at the consequences of being uninsured for people suffering from cancer, diabetes, HIV infection and AIDS, heart and kidney disease, mental illness, traumatic injuries, and heart attacks. It focused on the roughly 30 million-one in seven-working-age Americans without health insurance. This group does not include the population over 65 that is covered by Medicare or the nearly 10 million children who are uninsured in this country. The main findings of the report are that working-age Americans without health insurance are more likely to receive too little medical care and receive it too late; be sicker and die sooner; and receive poorer care when they are in the hospital, even for acute situations like a motor vehicle crash.

Book Health Care Utilization as a Proxy in Disability Determination

Download or read book Health Care Utilization as a Proxy in Disability Determination written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide benefits based on disability: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. This report analyzes health care utilizations as they relate to impairment severity and SSA's definition of disability. Health Care Utilization as a Proxy in Disability Determination identifies types of utilizations that might be good proxies for "listing-level" severity; that is, what represents an impairment, or combination of impairments, that are severe enough to prevent a person from doing any gainful activity, regardless of age, education, or work experience.

Book Insuring QualityHow to Improve Quality Compliance Customer Service and Ethics in the Insurance Industry

Download or read book Insuring QualityHow to Improve Quality Compliance Customer Service and Ethics in the Insurance Industry written by Les Abromovitz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-10-27 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can insurance providers boost their image and increase business? Hedy and Les Abromovitz's Insuring Quality takes a hard look at the insurance industry and suggests innovative new ways of improving customer satisfaction, turbo-charging sales and polishing the tarnished image of the industry. The insurance industry has an image problem. From Woody Allen movies to greeting cards, insurance agents are ridiculed as boring, overbearing pests out to make a quick buck at someone's expense. Recent criminal investigations into some of the nation's largest insurance providers have only made the situation worse. And that's bad news for insurance professionals - for more than any other business, the insurance industry is built on trust. This book was written by insurance professionals for insurance professionals - so every example in the book is based on a real-life situation. There's no ivory tower philosophizing or impenetrable jargon; just practical advice from two veterans who have examined the true relationship between quality, ethics, and customer service. As the authors say, "Insuring Quality will help your organization solve real-life problems. It's for the people in the trenches..."

This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), health care reform has created major changes in the U.S. health care system. The ACA has brought millions of people into the system who had no previous access, and many of these newly enrolled individuals have had limited experience navigating the complex and complicated U.S. health system. In July 2016 the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a public workshop to examine health insurance through the lens of health literacy, focusing on literacy related barriers to information and coverage as well as on possible solutions. Participants discussed the role of health literacy in accessing health care and remaining in treatment; delivery and financing system reforms that affect organizational health literacy; and quality and equity considerations. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Download or read book Coverage Matters written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-10-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roughly 40 million Americans have no health insurance, private or public, and the number has grown steadily over the past 25 years. Who are these children, women, and men, and why do they lack coverage for essential health care services? How does the system of insurance coverage in the U.S. operate, and where does it fail? The first of six Institute of Medicine reports that will examine in detail the consequences of having a large uninsured population, Coverage Matters: Insurance and Health Care, explores the myths and realities of who is uninsured, identifies social, economic, and policy factors that contribute to the situation, and describes the likelihood faced by members of various population groups of being uninsured. It serves as a guide to a broad range of issues related to the lack of insurance coverage in America and provides background data of use to policy makers and health services researchers.

Book Consumers Knowledge about Their Health Insurance Coverage

Download or read book Consumers Knowledge about Their Health Insurance Coverage written by M. Susan Marquis and published by . This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes how much families know about their health insurance coverage and investigates whether consumer education and simplified benefit structures would improve knowledge. Families' perceptions about their insurance benefits were measured in two household surveys administered in six sites. Knowledge was assessed by comparing families' responses with policy data collected from the carrier. The vast majority of families understand insurance policies that specify one or two parameters in their benefit provisions. However, more complex payment structures are not well understood. Increased exposure to the plans' information leads to increased knowledge, suggesting that education programs could improve the general level of knowledge. The author concludes that if market strategies for allocating medical resources are pursued, simplifying insurance benefit structures and consumer education would aid consumers in making more informed economic choices about medical care.
