Strategic motives include cost reduction, enhancing efficiency, leveraging of competence-based advantages, geographic expansion and speed to market. However, there is little academic research which has explored the relative impact of different strategic motives on offshoring performance. Using primary data on 201 Australian organisations, the empirical results of partial least squares (PLS) structural equation models suggest that implementing offshoring to achieve better efficiency and/or growth will have significant positive direct effects on firm performance and that the strategic motive has moderating effects on the relationship between the degree of offshoring and firm performance.

Book excerpt: The fundamental question of whether offshoring is value enhancing and, more specifically, whether Italian manufacturing firms that undertake offshoring benefit from higher productivity and profitability is explored. Using data from the tenth wave of the “Survey on Manufacturing Firms” conducted by Unicredit-Capitalia, it was found that, compared with domestic firms, firms relocating activities to a foreign country have different characteristics, and “better” firms might self-select into offshoring decision. To disentangle the effect of offshoring on firms' performances from the effect of firm characteristics, several variants of propensity score matching are used. A mild and insignificant positive effect of offshoring on profitability was found and also evidence of a statistically significant positive effect of offshoring on productivity.

Offshoring is considered as endogenous and its impact is estimated on ex post measures of firm performance. The dataset used allows the distinction between two forms of offshoring: vertical foreign direct investment (FDI) and international outsourcing. It also gives us the possibility of distinguishing between offshoring to developed and developing countries. The results show, first, that offshoring has a stronger effect on profitability and, second, that the implications on performance are significant only in the case of international outsourcing to developing countries.

Book excerpt: This paper estimates the effects of offshoring on productivity in U.S. manufacturing industries between 1992 and 2000, using instrumental variables estimation to address the potential endogeneity of offshoring. It finds that service offshoring has a significant positive effect on productivity in the US, accounting for around 11 percent of productivity growth during this period. Offshoring material inputs also has a positive effect on productivity, but the magnitude is smaller accounting for approximately 5 percent of productivity growth. There is a small negative effect of less than half a percent on employment when industries are finely disaggregated (450 manufacturing industries). However, this affect disappears at more aggregate industry level of 96 industries indicating that there is sufficient growth in demand in other industries within these broadly defined classifications to offset any negative effects.

Economists have responded to this shift by developing new models of global sourcing, generating important insights into the driving forces and economic effects of this new form of globalization. Many questions, however, remain unanswered. This book tries to fill this gap. The contributors ask new questions or offer new modeling approaches to fragmentation of production, focusing in particular on time and uncertainty. Captive centers are offshore subsidiaries or branch offices that provide the parent company with services, usually in the form of back-office activities. In Offshoring Strategies, Ilan Oshri examines the evolution of the captive center. He identifies basic captive center models, examines the captive center strategies pursued by Fortune Global 250 firms, describes current captive center trends, and offers detailed individual case studies that illustrate each model. His analysis highlights the strategic paths available to firms that want to maximize the returns offered by captive centers. Oshri outlines six models for captive centers that range from the basic wholly owned branch office to hybrids and joint ventures and identifies evolutionary paths along which the basic model develops.
