Book Improving Beef Cattle Reproductive Efficiency

Download or read book Improving Beef Cattle Reproductive Efficiency written by McKenzie R. Corpron and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Less than 10% of beef cow-calf producers in the United States currently implement reproductive technologies such as estrous synchronization and artificial insemination (AI) as a component of their breeding management program. Synchronization protocols aid in the synchrony of estrus and ovulation to improve cattle fertility, however, many protocols often require multiple hormone injections and animal handlings. Development of estrous synchronization protocols that limit number of injections, cost, and labor inputs, without compromising fertility, may improve the adoption of fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) within the beef industry. The main objective of the first study was to compare the effect of a single injection of high-concentration (HICON) prostaglandin F2[alpha] (PGF) or two conventional PGF injections (2PGF) administered 8 h apart at controlled internal drug release insert (CIDR) removal, on reducing serum progesterone (P4) before FTAI and on subsequent pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI) in postpartum beef cows (n=404) synchronized with a 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR breeding program. Serum P4 concentration at the time of insemination is a determining factor of cattle fertility in FTAI protocols, as lower concentrations have been associated with increased P/AI. A secondary objective of the first study was to assess the relationship between P4 concentration at the time of insemination and probability of pregnancy to AI. Progesterone concentrations at AI were lesser in 2PGF than HICON, however, P/AI was not different between treatments. Probability of pregnancy decreased as P4 concentration at AI increased and the optimal P4 cutoff concentration to optimize fertility was determined at 0.43 ng/mL. Intramuscular (i.m.) route of injection is commonly used to administer products used in estrous synchronization in beef cattle; however, this route causes greater incidence of injection-site lesions and tissue damage associated with reduced beef carcass quality and tenderness than subcutaneous (s.c.) routes. Therefore, use of s.c. administration is favorable to reduce carcass damage. The objective of the second study was to compare the ability of a single s.c. injection of high-concentration PGF (HICON-SC) with two i.m. injections of conventional PGF 6 h apart (2PGF-IM) to reduce P4 concentration and induce luteolysis by the time of AI in a 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR synchronization program in postpartum beef cows. A similar decline in P4 concentration occurred in both treatments following PGF, indicating s.c. administration of HICON could be an effective alternative to i.m. administration of the conventional double PGF dose to induce luteolysis before AI in the 5-d CO-Synch + CIDR protocol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Exp. 3, hCG was administered to suckled beef cows 7 d after TAI. Concentrations of progesterone were increased 14 and 33 d after TAI and volume of luteal tissue on d 14 was increased in cows treated with hCG. In addition, treatment with hCG tended to increase pregnancy rates at 5 of 6 locations (average = 10.2%).

Book Managing Body Condition to Improve Reproductive Efficiency in Beef Cows

Download or read book Managing Body Condition to Improve Reproductive Efficiency in Beef Cows written by L. H. Anderon and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The economics of the beef cattle industry forces cow-calf operations to produce efficiently, and percent of calf crop weaned (really a measure of reproductive efficiency) has a big influence on how efficient production will be. One way to improve reproductive efficiency is to shorten the number of days from calving to rebreeding (postpartum interval, or PPI)"-- Page 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cattle play a fundamental role in animal agriculture throughout the world. They not only provide us with a vital food source, but they also provide us with fertilizer and fuel. Keeping reproduction levels at an optimum level is therefore essential, but this is often a complicated process, especially with modern, high yielding cows. Written in a practical and user-friendly style, this book aims to help the reader understand cattle reproduction by explaining the underlying physiology of the reproductive process and the role and importance of pharmacology and technology, and showing how management techniques can improve reproductive efficiency. This edition includes: Recent research findings on the physiology of the oestrous cycle and its control; New techniques for monitoring and manipulating reproduction, including pregnancy diagnosis and embryo transfer; Advice on identifying common infertility problems and how to prevent and treat them. Reproduction Cattle 3e is essential reading for veterinary and agricultural students, as well as veterinarians and farmers involved in cattle reproduction.

Book Productive and reproductive Performance of indigenous Beef Cattle in Ethiopia

Download or read book Productive and reproductive Performance of indigenous Beef Cattle in Ethiopia written by Tajudin Denur and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich Gesundheit - Ernährungswissenschaft, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The aim of this review is to summarize the productive and reproductive performance of different indigenous cattle breeds under farmer’s management practices. Ethiopia is the home of large numbers of livestock due to having varied and extensive agro-ecological zones. From the total annual milk produced cattle milk, is the most prominent compared to other livestock species in Ethiopia. And also from the total annual meat produced cattle meat is the most prominent compared to other livestock species in Ethiopia. Numerous finding showed that calving interval, age at first calving, age at first service, number of service per conception and days open are one of the major measures of reproductive performance parameters for beef cattle production. Weight at different ages (including birth weight, weaning weight, 3 month weight, 6 month weight and yearling weight), meat yield, growth rate and carcass yield are one of the major measures of productive performance parameters for beef cattle production. Different report indicated that productive and reproductive performances of our indigenous cattle are very poor due to varied factors; the causes for low performances of beef cattle were genetic and environmental factors like feeding, housing and health care. In Ethiopia most of (98.20%) cattle breeds are local breeds the remaining (1.8%) are hybrid and exotic breeds. Then, the genetic performances of these breeds are poor, even though they have good adaptation in harsh environmental conditions. So, training and awareness creation should be given particularly to the farmers on major management practices like feeding, housing and health care and genetic improvement strategies should planned and practiced.

Book Effect of Mineral Supplementation on Reproductive Efficiency of Beef Cows

Download or read book Effect of Mineral Supplementation on Reproductive Efficiency of Beef Cows written by Felipe Guirado Dantas and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive efficiency is the major component for an economically efficient cow/calf operation and can be influenced by a number of factors such as breed, age, health and nutrition. Among the components of the diet, trace minerals are hypothesized to have a major impact reproductive efficiency in beef cattle. In order to test this specific hypothesis, a study directly evaluating the success of reproductive performance in cows fed complexed trace minerals versus inorganic trace mineral was designed. In this study, 68 cows where equally divided into treatment (cows fed with complexed trace minerals) and control (cows fed with inorganic trace minerals) groups. The cows started being fed 30 days prior to AI (d -30). Twenty-eight days after AI (d 28), all cows where diagnosed for pregnancy and non-pregnant cows where removed from the experiment. Twenty-four days after pregnancy diagnosis (d 52), pregnant cows where submitted to ovum pick-up (OPU) and a second OPU was performed on d 67. Although pregnancy rates did not differ (P = 0.33) between treatment and control, cows fed with complexed trace minerals had increased oocyte recovery (P = 0.03), in vitro embryo production (P = 0.06) and more efficient in vitro embryo production (P = 0.06). In summary, the results from this experiment demonstrated that supplementation of beef cows with a complexed source of trace minerals improves reproductive efficiency when compared to cows fed inorganic source of trace minerals.
