Download or read book Improvement of Dynamic Power System Stability by Installing Unified Power Flow Controller UPFC Based on Fuzzy Logic Power System Stabilizer FLPSS written by Arizadayana Zahalan and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decade, the demand of electrical power increased tremendously and power system have been operated under much more stressed condition hence may lead to unstable power system. On the other hand, low frequency oscillation due to interconnection between remotely located power system may as well affect the system stability. Thus, to improve dynamic power system stability the research proposed the installation of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) which is the most versatile Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device in single machine infinite bus (SMIB) based on fuzzy logic power system stabilizer (FLPSS). In the proposed system, the parameters for the power system before and after the installation of UPFC is derived referring to the Phillips-Heffron SMIB model. After the mathematical process, the value of all the parameters is obtained using Matlab m-file listing program. Based on the parameter value, the block diagram for the power system before and after the installation of UPFC is formed using Matlab Simulink. Power system stabilizer is then added to the conventional power system model while FLPSS is added to UPFC excitation control. In this study, damping controller m_E and m_B of UPFC is used. After given small disturbances to both power system, the ability of both power system to damp oscillation is monitored by investigating the changes of rotor angle, change of rotor speed and change of electrical power. The result showed that that fuzzy logic controller is able to decrease the amplitude of low frequency oscillation and increases damping rate successfully. Comparing between power system model installed with UPFC based on FLPSS and conventional power system indicates that the proposed FLPSS has less settling time and less overshoot. When electrical power is increased at 0.1 pu, using damping controller m_E, rotor angle overshoot is decreased at 84.63% and settling time decreased at 80.32%. Rotor speed overshoot decreased at 63.28% whereas the settling time is reduced at 61.97%. The electrical power also shows a significant reduce in overshoot by 16.31% while the settling time is reduced by 61.80%. For m_B, rotor angle overshoot is decreased at 82.87% and settling time decreased at 82.61%. The rotor speed experienced a decrease of 57.55% in overshoot whereas the settling time is reduced at 74.24%. For electrical power, settling time is reduced by 60.24%. When electrical power is decreased at 0.1 pu, using damping controller m_E, rotor angle overshoot decreased at 84.61% and settling time decreased at 82.00%. Rotor speed overshoot decreased at 63.29% whereas the settling time is reduced at 63.83%. The electrical power also shows a significant reduce in overshoot by 16.31% while the settling time is reduced by 61.61%. For m_B, rotor angle overshoot is decreased at 82.87% and settling time decreased at 83.03%. The rotor speed experienced a decrease of 57.51% in overshoot whereas the settling time is reduced at 74.24%. For electrical power, settling time is reduced by 59.94%.This thesis focuses on analyzing different nonlinear algorithms to capture the emotional information present in two bio-signals namely Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Electromyogram (EMG). Book A Smart Power System Stabilizer for Dynamic Reduction of a Power System Model

Download or read book A Smart Power System Stabilizer for Dynamic Reduction of a Power System Model written by Mohamed Ali Masrob and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on studying the dynamic stability of power systems and improving them by the addition of smart power system stabilizers (PSSs). A conventional design technique of a power system stabilizer that uses a single machine connected to an infinite bus through a transmission line (SMIB) has been widely used for study of elecromechanical perturbations. This approach requires estimating the external equivalent impedance and the voltage at an external bus for each machine in a multi-machine system. This study will use the conventional mathematical method, which represents a power system with some modifications. The dynamic model is linearized by taking the high voltage side on the generation unit as a reference instead of the infinite bus voltage. By using this modification, several improvements are accomplished, the main ones of which are: the estimation of states is eliminated, the time consumed in estimating calculations is reduced, the parameters of the model are independent of the external system, and the PSS design for each machine is independent in a multi-machine environment system. This strategy enables a PSS to be designed for a single machine and then implemented in a multi-machine system. Power systems have advanced to the point that they now cover vast geographical areas. Consequently, they are not only quite complicated, but the system orders are also high. As the complexity of these systems increases, so does the difficulty of examining their dynamic stability and adjusting their controllers. In this research, to address these issues, the reduced model technique has been employed to mathematically define smaller system models from existing models, such that the properties of both systems are comparable properties. The parameters of the PSS are determined based on a modified Heffron- Phillips model of the power system at certain operating conditions where it can provide reliable performance. Since the power systems are highly nonlinear with configurations and parameters that change with time, a typical PSS design, which is based on a linearized model of the power system, cannot guarantee its performance in practical operating environments. The present study attempts to overcome this limitation by implementing smart power system stabilizers. In the context of this thesis the word smart means novel technique. An artificial neural network power system stabilizer (ANN-PSS), a novel multi input fuzzy logic power system stabilizer (FLPSS), and a modified multi-resolution proportional-integral-derivative power system stabilizer (MMR-PID-PSS), based on the dynamic reduction of a power system model. These PSSs have been developed to refine the power system dynamic performance by adjusting the regulator's parameters in real-time simulation under various operating conditions. In the first part of this research, the digital simulations results using the proposed ANN-PSS and FLPSS are carried out on a single machine connected to a network and are then compared with conventional Lead-Lag PSS. The results show that the power system with FLPSS has a better dynamic response over a wide range of operating conditions and parameter changes. Next, the digital simulations results using the proposed MMR-PID-PSS is carried out on a single machine connected to the network, a 4-machine 10-bus power system, and a 10-machine 39-bus power system and then compared with FLPSS. The results validate the effectiveness of the proposed MMR-PID-PSS regarding reduced overshoot, undershoot, and settling time under a different type of disturbances.

Book excerpt: The rate of Iraqi power demand has been increased significantly faster than the infrastructure's development and it becomes very difficult to keep the system stable especially with the current acts of vandalism against the country, so it's very important to improve the power system stability. The object of this work is to improve the stability of the Iraqi National Super Grid System (INSGS) by installing Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) devices in different optimal locations under fault condition and comparing the results with those of without UPFC devices under the same condition. The optimal location of the UPFC device was specified based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimization method, it was utilized to search for optimum UPFC parameters setting and location based objective function that depends on the power and voltage as a fitness constraints. The results obtained showed that the installation of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) devices at the optimal locations of the Iraqi grid gives an improvement in the stability by damping the voltage and rotor angle oscillations after subjected to the three phase fault to ground at different locations and different cases.

Book Fuzzy Logic Concepts in Power System Stability

Download or read book Fuzzy Logic Concepts in Power System Stability written by Neeraj Gupta and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of power system stabilizers has become very common in operation of large electric power systems. The conventional PSS which uses lead- lag compensation, where gain settings designed for specific operating conditions, is giving poor performance under different loading conditions. Therefore, it is very difficult to design a stabilizer that could present good performance in all operating points of electric power systems. In an attempt to cover a wide range of operating conditions, Fuzzy logic control has been suggested as a possible solution to overcome this problem, thereby using linguist information and avoiding a complex system mathematical model, while giving good performance under different operating conditions. Simulink Block Design and Matlab-7.5 is utilized in implementing the study. The performance of the system with fuzzy logic based power system stabilizer is compared with the system having conventional power system stabilizer and system without power system stabilizer.

This book was released on 2021-04-18 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FACTS are one aspect of power electronics revolution that is taking place in all areas of electrical energy. A variable of powerful semiconductor devices not only offer the advantage of high speed and reliability of switching but, more importantly, the opportunity offered by a variety of innovative circuit concepts based on these power devices enhance the value of electric energy. In generation area, the potential application of power electronics is largely in renewable generation. Photovoltaic and fuel cells requires conversion of dc to ac. Generation with variable speed is necessary for economic viability of wind and small hydro generators. Variable-speed wind generators and small hydro generators requires conversion of variable frequency ac to power system frequency. These applications of power electronics in renewable generation area require converter sizes in the range of few kilowatts to few megawatts. In coming decades, electrical energy storage is expected to be widely used in power systems as capacitor, battery and superconducting magnet technologies move forward. Batteries are widely used already for emergency power supplies. These require ac/dc/ac converters in the range of a few kilowatts to a few tens of megawatts. On the other hand, variable speed hydro storage requires converters of up to a few hundred megawatts. In transmission area, application of power electronics consists of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power transmission and FACTS. HVDC is often an economical way to interconnect certain power systems, which are suited in different regions separated by long distances or those have different frequencies or incompatible frequency control. HVDC involves conversion of ac to dc at one end and conversion of dc to ac at the other end. What is most interesting for transmission planners is that FACTS opens up new opportunities for controlling power and enhancing the usable capacity of the lines. The possibility that current through a line can be controlled at reasonable cost enables a large potential of increasing the capacity of the existing lines with larger conductors, and use one of the FACTS controllers to enable corresponding power to flow through lines under normal and contingency conditions. These opportunities arise through the ability of FACTS controllers to control the interrelated parameters that govern the operation of transmission line including series impedance, shunt impedance, current, voltage, phase angle, and the damping of oscillations at various frequencies below the rated frequency. In distribution area, an exciting opportunity called Custom Power. The custom power concept incorporates power electronics controllers and switching equipment, one or more of which can be used to provide a value-added service to the customers. In general, these custom service applications represent power electronics in the range of few tens of kilowatts to few ten of megawatts of conversion or switching equipment between the utility supply and customer. On the end-user side, power electronics conversion and switching technology has been fast growing area. Complementing the Custom Power technology is the whole area of power conditioning technology used by customers, under the term Power Quality. Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and voltage regulators represent the major growth area in power electronics. In end use, the converter sizes range from a few watts to ten of megawatts. The term active filter is a general one and is applied to a group of power electronic circuits incorporating power switching devices and passive energy storage circuit elements such as inductors and capacitors. The functions of these circuits vary depending on the applications. They are generally used for controlling current harmonics in supply networks at the low and medium voltage distribution level or for reactive power and/or voltage control at high voltage distribution level. These functions may be combined in a single circuit or in separate active filters. Most of the control schemes introduced in the existing papers were designed either for eliminating current harmonics or eliminating voltage flickers or for load flow control. So, this work is devoted to find a proper optimal control schemes for a system with series or shunt or series and shunt converters that can provide all functions together. Various optimal control schemes will be designed for systems with series, shunt and series-shunt converters with the objective to control the load flow through a lines and to eliminate current harmonics and voltage flickers with different strategies for tracking. · Part 1: Gives the description of optimal control design. · Part 2: Case studies to design different optimal control schemes for system with UPFC unit to control the power flow, eliminate voltage flicker and eliminate current harmonics. The case studies were repeated for system with only series or shunt converters.

Book Optimal Placement of Unified Power Flow Controller by Dynamic Implementation of System Variable Based Voltage Stability Indices to Enhance Voltage Stability

Download or read book Optimal Placement of Unified Power Flow Controller by Dynamic Implementation of System Variable Based Voltage Stability Indices to Enhance Voltage Stability written by Shameem Ahmad and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach of unified power flow controller (UPFC) optimal placement in the power system network based on dynamic analysis of voltage stability is presented in this paper. Voltage stability indices (VSIs), called line stability index LQP, voltage collapse point indicators (VCPIs), and line stability factor Lmn have been employed to explore the most suitable location for UPFC. The locations of UPFC are identified by dynamically varying loads across all the PQ buses by different percentages to satisfy the real power system conditions. The simulations are conducted in a power system computer-aided design (PSCAD) environment where IEEE-39 bus system has been chosen as case study. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been ensured from the simulation results because UPFC's placement in the obtained locations resulted in an improved voltage stability condition. Furthermore, to verify the suitability of the explored locations, a comparative study has been conducted after placing UPFC in the present locations and other locations obtained using optimization techniques like particle swarm optimization (PSO), differential evolution (DE), genetic algorithm (GA), and bacteria foraging algorithm (BFA). In all the cases, UPFC's placement in the identified locations using the proposed approach has resulted in better voltage stability condition improvement compared to heuristics approaches.
