Book Improved Techniques for the Characterisation of Soil Organic Phosphorus Using 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Their Application to Australian Soils

Download or read book Improved Techniques for the Characterisation of Soil Organic Phosphorus Using 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Their Application to Australian Soils written by Ashlea Louise Doolette and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic phosphorus is potentially an important source of phosphorus (P) for agriculture, although it is not directly available for plant or microbial uptake. However, organic P can be converted into available inorganic P though hydrolysis or mineralisation. The rate of P release from organic P forms depends partly on the specific organic P compounds present in the soil. Until recently characterising soil organic P has been limited by the lack of appropriate analytic techniques. Consequently, organic P dynamics remains poorly understood. In this thesis, the focus was on improving techniques for the characterisation of soil organic P using solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, applying these techniques to characterise a range of Australian soils and developing a better understanding of the cycling and potential bioavailability of soil organic P.

Book Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Download or read book Nuclear Magnetic Resonance written by G A Webb and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a spectroscopic method, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has seen spectacular growth over the past two decades, both as a technique and in its applications. Today the applications of NMR span a wide range of scientific disciplines, from physics to biology to medicine. Each volume of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance comprises a combination of annual and biennial reports which together provide comprehensive coverage of the literature on this topic. This Specialist Periodical Report reflects the growing volume of published work involving NMR techniques and applications, in particular NMR of natural macromolecules which is covered in two reports: "NMR of Proteins and Nucleic Acids" and "NMR of Carbohydrates, Lipids and Membranes". For those wanting to become rapidly acquainted with specific areas of NMR, this title provides unrivalled scope of coverage. Seasoned practitioners of NMR will find this an invaluable source of current methods and applications. Volume 33 covers literature published from June 2002 to May 2003. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage in major areas of chemical research. Compiled by teams of leading authorities in the relevant subject areas, the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, with regular, in-depth accounts of progress in particular fields of chemistry. Subject coverage within different volumes of a given title is similar and publication is on an annual or biennial basis.

Book Carbon Nitrogen and Phosphorus Cycling in Forest Soils

Download or read book Carbon Nitrogen and Phosphorus Cycling in Forest Soils written by Robert G. Qualls and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of carbon stored in the soils of the world is stored in forests. The refractory nature of some portions of forest soil organic matter also provides the slow, gradual release of organic nitrogen and phosphorus to sustain long term forest productivity. Contemporary and future disturbances, such as climatic warming, deforestation, short rotation sylviculture, the invasion of exotic species, and fire, all place strains on the integrity of this homeostatic system of C, N, and P cycling. On the other hand, the CO2 fertilization effect may partially offset losses of soil organic matter, but many have questioned the ability of N and P stocks to sustain the CO2 fertilization effect. Despite many advances in the understanding of C, N, and P cycling in forest soils, many questions remain. For example, no complete inventory of the myriad structural formulae of soil organic N and P has ever been made. The factors that cause the resistance of soil organic matter to mineralization are still hotly debated. Is it possible to “engineer” forest soil organic matter so that it sequesters even more C? The role of microbial species diversity in forest C, N, and P cycling is poorly understood. The difficulty in measuring the contribution of roots to soil organic C, N, and P makes its contribution uncertain. Finally, global differences in climate, soils, and species make the extrapolation of any one important study difficult to extrapolate to forest soils worldwide.

Book Organic Phosphorus in the Environment

Download or read book Organic Phosphorus in the Environment written by Benjamin L. Turner and published by Cabi. This book was released on 2005 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phosphorus is essential for life, yet is often the element most limiting for biological productivity. Although most organisms take up phosphorus in an inorganic form, organic forms frequently dominate in soils and aquatic systems. Up to this point, the role of organic phosphorus and mechanisms for its dynamics have been poorly understood. However, recent advances in research have shed new light on the subject and this book brings together these advances. It covers the transformation and characterization of organic phosphorus in both terrestrial and aquatic systems. It will attract a broad range of scientists from several disciplines.
