Book excerpt: The Gulf of Mexico Basin offers the greatest near-term potential for reducing the future decline in domestic oil and gas production. The Basin is less mature than productive on-shore areas, large unexplored areas remain, and there is great potential for reducing bypassed oil in known fields. On February 18, 1992, Louisiana State University with two technical subcontractors, BDM, Inc. and ICF, Inc., began a research program to estimate the potential oil and gas reserve additions that could result from the application of advanced secondary and enhanced oil recovery technologies and the exploitation of undeveloped and attic oil zones in the Gulf of Mexico oil fields that are related to piercement salt domes. This project is a one year continuation of this research and will continue work in reservoir description, extraction processes, and technology transfer. Detailed data will be collected for two previously studied reservoirs: a South Marsh Island reservoir operated by Taylor Energy and one additional Gulf of Mexico reservoir operated by Mobil. Additional reservoirs identified during the project will also be studied if possible. Data collected will include reprocessed 2-D seismic data, newly acquired 3-D data, fluid data, fluid samples, pressure data, well test data, well logs, and core data/samples. The new data unit be used to refine reservoir and geologic characterization of these reservoirs. Further laboratory investigation will provide additional simulation input data in the form of PVT properties, relative permeabilities, capillary pressures, and water compatibility. Geological investigations will be conducted to refine the models of mud-rich submarine architectures used by seismic analysts and reservoir engineers. Research on advanced reservoir simulation will also be conducted.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to assist the recovery of non contacted oil from known reservoirs on the Outer Continental Shelf in the Gulf of Mexico. History matching and prediction runs have been completed on the B-35-K reservoir, history matching has been completed on the B-65-G reservoir and on Reservoir 3. Modifications to BOAST II and MASTER consisted of developing codes to handle steeply dipping oil reservoirs and a radial grid format for near wellbore studies. Modifications for steeply dipping reservoirs have been successfully implemented and tested against commercial simulators in the PC version of BOAST II, renamed BOAST III. At present, modifications to BOAST II for radial grid systems are producing acceptable results in a 2-D model. A paper was presented at the 1994 ACM Symposium on Applied Computing in Phoenix, Arizona, March 6--8, 1994 on these results. Modifications have also been successfully implemented in the MASTER simulator. It is presently undergoing industry testing for validity. Laboratory investigations continued but were slowed by several unforeseen incidences involving broken apparatus and inability to receive parts due to the California earthquake. Predictive models for undeveloped oil and immiscible/miscible processes began. The methodology for determination of undeveloped potential has been completed. The design of the miscible and updip displacement models as well as the design of the economic and timing models is underway. The coding and calibration of the models will begin soon.

Much of the remaining oil in the offshore is trapped in formations that are extremely complex due to intrusions of salt domes. Significant innovations have been made in seismic processing and reservoir simulation. In addition, significant advances have been made in deviated and horizontal drilling technologies. Effective application of these technologies along with improved integrated resource management methods offer opportunities to significantly increase Gulf of Mexico production, delay platform abandonments, and preserve access to a substantial remaining oil target for both exploratory drilling and advanced recovery processes. Book excerpt: West Welch Unit is one of four large waterflood units in the Welch Field in the northwestern portion of Dawson County, TX. This field was discovered early 1940's and produces oil under a solution gas drive mechanism from the Sand Adres formation at (almost equal to)4800 ft. This field has been under waterflood for 30 yr and a significant portion has been infill drilled on 20-ac density. A 1982-86 CO2 injection project in the offsetting South Welch Unit yielded positive results. Recent installation of a CO2 pipeline near the field allowed phased development of a miscible CO2 injection project at the South Welch Unit. Reservoir quality is poorer at West Welch Unit due to relative position to sea level during deposition, and this unit is ideal for demonstrating methods for enhancing economics of IOR projects in lower quality SSC (shallow shelf carbonate) reservoirs. This Class 2 project concentrates on the efficient design of a miscible CO2 project based on detailed reservoir characterization. During the quarter, progress was made on petrophysical analysis and tomography processing. The geologic model is dependent on these, and the actual reservoir simulation cannot start until the geologic model is complete, although all the preliminary simulation work is being done.
