Book excerpt: Smith and Trimble present 103 photographs of the bustling city nestled in the classic Great Basin valley between the Wasatch and Oquirrh mountains. The images convey the city's brilliant landscapes and cityscapes, large and small, from the salt-crusted shorelines of the Great Salt Lake to the Dale Chihuly glass sculpture Olympic Tower in Abravanel Hall, from autumn foliage in the Tracy Aviary to Trolley Square's neon water tower, from festively-lit Temple Square to the bright murals at Artspace on Pierpont Avenue. A thoughtful foreword written by Salt Lake City-native Holly Mullen, editor of City Weekly, and informative captions written by writer and naturalist Stephen Trimble complement the photographs.

Book excerpt: A guide to the history and culture of the American Southwest, as told through early encounters with fifteen iconic sites This unique guide for literate travelers in the American Southwest tells the story of fifteen iconic sites across Arizona, New Mexico, southern Utah, and southern Colorado through the eyes of the explorers, missionaries, and travelers who were the first non-natives to describe them. Noted borderlands historians David J. Weber and William deBuys lead readers through centuries of political, cultural, and ecological change. The sites visited in this volume range from popular destinations within the National Park System—including Carlsbad Caverns, the Grand Canyon, and Mesa Verde—to the Spanish colonial towns of Santa Fe and Taos and the living Indian communities of Acoma, Zuni, and Taos. Lovers of the Southwest, residents and visitors alike, will delight in the authors’ skillful evocation of the region’s sweeping landscapes, its rich Hispanic and Indian heritage, and the sense of discovery that so enchanted its early explorers. Book Utah in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Utah in the Twentieth Century written by Brian Q. Cannon and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2009-06-15 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth could easily be Utah’s most interesting, complex century, yet popular ideas of what is history seem mired in the nineteenth. One reason may be the lack of readily available writing on more recent Utah history. This collection of essays shifts historical focus forward to the twentieth, which began and ended with questions of Utah’s fit with the rest of the nation. In between was an extended period of getting acquainted in an uneasy but necessary marriage, which was complicated by the push of economic development and pull of traditional culture, demand for natural resources from a fragile and scenic environment, and questions of who governs and how, who gets a vote, and who controls what is done on and to the contested public lands. Outside trade and a tourist economy increasingly challenged and fed an insular society. Activists left and right declaimed constitutional liberties while Utah’s Native Americans become the last enfranchised in the nation. Proud contributions to national wars contrasted with denial of deep dependence on federal money; the skepticism of provocative writers, with boosters eager for growth; and reflexive patriotism somehow bonded to ingrained distrust of federal government.

Book Bryce Canyon National Park Impressions

Download or read book Bryce Canyon National Park Impressions written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it may not look it, Bryce Canyon is a world in motion. Daily, from seemingly immutable cliffs rocks tumble, ancient and immovable hoodoos shed skin, and high-angled slopes elbow downhill. Underfoot, the very soil ripples as unseen microorganisms tunnel gossamer fingers. The silent forest bustles as mule deer, prairie dogs, coyotes, hawks, and snakes partner in life's dynamic and complex dance. Photographer James Randklev beautifully captures the timelessness of this Utah treasure.
