Book Impressions of India Classic Reprint

Download or read book Impressions of India Classic Reprint written by Henry Craik and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of India These impressions of a tour through India, made during the winter of 1907-8, are pre sented in no spirit of dogmatism. They are simply the record of personal observation, aided by abundant conferences with those who had the best right to pronounce an authorita tive judgment, whether amongst the native races or amongst our own countrymen. I have sought to avoid the presumption of pro nouncing judgment upon problems on which long experience alone entitles one to have definite opinions, as well as the danger of saying one word which might increase the difficulties of those responsible for Indian administration. Book Under the Sun Impressions of Indian Cities

Download or read book Under the Sun Impressions of Indian Cities written by Perceval Landon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Sun, Impressions of Indian Cities: With a Chapter Dealing With the Later Life of Nana Sahib Upon the title-page I have placed Sir John's comment, which to this day remains the beginning and the end of all Indian knowledge. These chapters have been written in the course of annual wanderings over India during the last five years, and their intention is to indicate - if the unhappy phrase must be used - the widely different local colour that distinguishes one Indian city from another. Under the Sun is not a record of the late tour of the Prince of Wales, nor is it in any sense a guide-book. But as a companion to that invaluable volume it may perhaps be of use to those who find a difficulty in making a picture out of the wealth of detailed Indian information which every traveller now possesses. There are also some tales. The chapter dealing with the hitherto unknown later days of Nana Sahib may seem somewhat out of keeping with the rest of the book. I am, however, confident that, on the contrary, these will prove to no few the most interest ing pages in the volume, and my excuse for inserting them here must be that their small compass - which I did not wish to expand by adding in any way to the bald historical facts that are here presented for the first time - made their separate publication somewhat difficult. I owe thanks to many both in India and at home, and especially Iwish to acknowledge the kindness of the proprietors of the Daily Telegraph, in whose columns I was enabled to sum up in a series of letters a part of what is here recast in a more permanent form. Book England s Mission to India

Book excerpt: Excerpt from England's Mission to India: Some Impressions From a Recent Visit My one object is to bring home to Churchmen generally, so far as I may, a stronger sense of the extraordinary greatness of our Mission, and of the universal duty and responsibility, which it lays upon us all. If it should stir any readers to serious thought and inquiry on these important subjects - if it should in any degree help to increase the encouragement and support, given from home to those who are labouring in the singularly arduous work of our Church in India - it will be to me a cause of the deepest thankfulness. Never did the old motto of the S. P. G. - "Come over and help us" - address itself more emphatically to the Church of England, than in the cry which comes to us on behalf of the two hundred and eighty millions of our Indian Empire, committed under God's Providence to our charge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History: India The Romance of the History of India is one of a series of historical tales founded on the histories of England, France, Spain, Italy, and India, which obtained great popularity when first published. The copyright of them having passed to the present Publishers, hey have been induced to reproduce them in a compact form - complete in a single volume - in the belief that by so doing they will be adding to the literary pleasure of another generation. The success of the several series of "Romance of History" already published has induced the Publishers of that work to extend it in order to embrace a portion of history generally considered extremely exuberant in romantic features. The present series will be confined to the Mahomedan conquests in India, in the records of which are to be found numerous events of signal and stirring interest, which, while they develope the character of a distant people in a remote age, serve also to confirm many fine axioms of moral truth by exhibiting how, under all the variations of clime and fluctuations of circumstance, the great result of human actions is everywhere the same. This being a portion of history with which the general reader is less familiar than with that embraced in the preceding series of this work, the choice has been made under the impression that it may lead to a more extended reading of those annals which contain some of the most interesting facts to be found in the records of ages. Book Six Months in India Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Six Months in India Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Mary Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Months in India, Vol. 1 of 2 IT was not MY intention, when I went to India, to write an account of my travels: my visit was purely one of friendly sympathy. Circumstances recorded in the following narrative, led me to modify my original intention, and greatly extended my sphere of observa tion. The light afl'orded me by my past experience, as well as the sympathy in my work of the Supreme Go vernment and that of each Presidency, and the friendly confidence of the native inhabitants, enabled me, in my brief visit, to see and learn much which does not usually come under the notice of travellers. Every thing, invested with the charm of novelty, produced a very vivid impression on my mind; and though I had no time while in the country to record in writing many of these impressions, yet I had peculiar opportunities of comparing them with those of official gentlemen, and of experienced residents in the country, and thus of correcting or strengthening them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Village, Town, and Jungle, Life in India In an article in The Calcutta Review of January 1893 on Cold Weather Visitors in India, after commenting on the mistakes made by one of them, the writer remarks that such crude and undigested impressions of India are useless and mischievous, and that, as they pass muster at home for real facts, perhaps more might be done to place a true picture of the state of things before our countrymen. He suggests that a few who have passed much of their lives in India might record the facts "before Indian impressions have had time to fade away, and while they are still surrounded by all the local colour." My long experience of life in that country between 1874 and 1902 in many parts - town and jungle, hills and plains - has enabled me to collect much detailed information. I have arranged these notes in the hope that they may be interesting to those about to proceed to India, and to many who stay at home. Download or read book A Vision of India Classic Reprint written by Sidney Low and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vision of India The materials on which the following pages are founded were collected, for the most part, during the progress of the Prince and Princess of Wales through the Empire of India, which I was permitted to accompany as Special Correspondent of the Standard, in the autumn and winter of 1905 and the spring of the following year. Of this interesting journey much might be written from the personal, the political, and the purely pictorial side. It is not, however, with these matters that I am chiefly con cerned. I deviated rather frequently from the route of the royal travellers, since it was my object to give some general idea of the conditions of life and society prevailing in India, rather than to furnish a circumstantial record of the tour, or to describe in detail those places of historical, antiquarian, and aesthetic interest which were included in the official itinerary. It has been my aim to reproduce something of the impression which our vast and varied dominion of the East - almost a world in itself - leaves on the mind, in its splendour and its contradictions, its colour and its mystery, its wealth and poverty, its medley of classes, creeds, and peoples: to hint at a few of the absorbing problems suggested by the contemplation of this strange and fascinating amalgam. I hope that my survey, partial and incomplete as it may be, will not mislead those who know India only from hearsay and.
