Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Impressions in America It has been my habit to inscribe my books to some friend or friends; but in this instance I am bewildered by the number of American friends, to each. Of whom, with almost equal propriety, I might offer such small tribute of gratitude as the dedication of a book can imply. I should be very unwilling to be thought mindful of the kindness of only him, or her, or them, whose names appeared in such an inscription. So that I feel it better to dedicate this record of innumerable acts of kindness and hospitality to each and all of those by whom they were shown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over Here: Impressions of America During a year spent largely in Pennsylvania, with occasional visits to other states, I have found little to criticise, but rather much to admire, much indeed to love. America now means a great deal to me, since it contains so many people that I have learnt to care for, so I want to let my cousins as well as my own countrymen know my thoughts. From the day that I landed in New York until the present moment, I have been treated with a kindliness that surpasses anything I thought possible in this world. I have been able to see, I hope, where misunderstanding has arisen, and, being a Highland Scotchman, I am able to express my feelings. I have written more about persons than about places. Sometimes I laugh a little, but never unkindly; and I do this because I realize that American people rather appreciate a joke even at their own expense. Often I have heard, over here, that it is impossible for an Englishman to see a good joke. A man told me once that the Kaiser was disguising his submarines as jests, with an obvious design. The idea was interesting to me, because if there is one thing that we Britons pride ourselves upon, it is our sense of humour. Of course, the explanation is obvious. Book America Old and New

Download or read book America Old and New written by James Nelson Fraser and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America, Old and New: Impressions of Six Months in the States The scenery which Europe has chosen for its type of America is the prairie land of the Middle West. So far as any choice could be made this is not unfair, for there is more of this scenery in the States than of any other, but the impression created is after all a partial one. There are vast regions in America which for better or for worse are very different from the Middle West. There are, to begin with, the veritable deserts of the South Coast, the great Sahara of the continent. It stretches hundreds of miles inland from the Rockies, a wilderness of rocks and sands. Few level tracts occur; ridges and peaks of rock rise everywhere. Vegetation is seldom quite absent; it is vegetation of the classic desert type, thorny bushes, aloes and cactus trees, useless to man and beast. There is no American camel to crop their dry and bitter foliage; lizards and rattlesnakes are the native inheritors of the wilderness. Human eyes may look on the scene with various feelings. It is now the solemn waste of the Egyptian and Arabian sands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of America, Vol. 2 of 2: During the Years 1833, 1834, and 1835 It was about dusk when we landed; and I was at first greatly surprised by the numbers of pret ty and neatly-dressed women we encountered strolling about, or chatting together in groups, wholly unattended by the other sex. I was quickly reminded, however, that at this season of the year the husbands, lovers, and sons of the community are mostly absent in their vessels fishing on the banks of Newfoundland, and not returnable under ten or twelve weeks. I cannot help observing that it does infinite credit to the moderation of these citoyennes that they forbear from taking the sovereign rule. Into their own hands at these times, since assuredly they possess the power of numbers to enforce submission, were the resident housekeepers hardy enough to offer resistance. Book Outre Mer

Download or read book Outre Mer written by Paul Bourget and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outre-Mer: Impressions of America Yes, this is the evident task of these three direful and merciless toilers, whom it is nevertheless vain to ban. For in the grand, irresistible forces of society, as in those of nature, there is a character of fatality which is just so far sacred. Lying beyond the foresight and control of man, they appear to us as mysterious emanations of the very principle from which all reality flows. All that is irresistible and illimitable in them commands our acquiescence, as birth and death com mand it, as day and night, or as this sea, Whose waves beat upon this vessel on which I write these lines. In presence of such a necessity despair is impossible, until one has cal culated all the chances of a happier future; that is to say, until one has made certain that the effects produced by these implacable causes are always the same. Now one country has been found where these three forces, so destructive in our old world, have been called upon to con struct, out of whole cloth, a new universe. This country was a democracy from the very beginning, and a scientific democ racy, because to conquer this virgin soil it was necessary to make use of the most modern machines and methods of indus try. It was a country upon which the race problem was forced at its very origin, and against which it still continually brings up, being formed of the alluvium of all the nations Of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and forced to make it possible not only for Englishmen to live with Irishmen, and Germans with French men, but yellow and black men with men of white skins. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americans, an Impression HE earlier chapters Of this book were written in America, the later ones in England and all were revised by me in Russia, where I was able to regard the two English speaking nations with greater detachment than was, perhaps, possible either in the country which is my own or in the country which is my theme, and to compare Democracy, as it is exemplified in England and America, with Autocracy, which finds its most notable modern instance in the Empire Of the Tsar. Book Henry Irving s

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry Irving's: Impressions of America, Vol. 1 of 2: Narrated in a Series of Sketches, Chronicles, and Conversations The interest taken by you in our American experiences has been made manifest to us in many ways on this side of the Atlantic. We have received the "God speed" of friends and associates, and a record of our trip will, I believe, be interesting to many. My own share in this book is but small; and to my friend, Joseph Hatton, belongs whatever credit there may be in it. It will, I hope, be accepted only for what it professes to be, - a series of sketches, chronicles, and conversations regarding a tour which the American people made for us, by their welcome and by their bounteous hospitality, a delightful progress. In our intercourse with our friends, old and new, throughout the United States, nothing has impressed us more than their fondness for the old country.
