The combination of resource extraction, neoliberal policies, and patrimonial regimes is the foundation for the abject poverty and poor literacy that exists in many African nations today. This book uses data provided by highly regarded international organizations, such as the Index of Economic Freedom, The Global Innovation Index, The Intelligence Unit Democracy Index, and Corruption Perception Index. This research supports the theory that Africa’s perpetual poverty is a result of the extractive transfer of natural resources, the implementation of neoliberal trade policies, and the ongoing support of bad governance and poor leadership.

African mineral resources are sufficient enough to the point that if they were equally and fairly utilized in the interest of the Africa people, Africa was going to be a poverty-free continent. Unfortunately opposite is the case, the African mineral resources continue to enrich the Westerners at the expense of the African people. Africans are political free but remain economically in prison, which they cant see, smell, touch or feel.The west destabilizes the African continent by pouring military weapons to the African continent to ensure that bloodshed does not cease.

De Ploeg documents the local roots of the Donbass rebellion, the overwhelming popularity of Crimea's secession, and shows that support for Ukraine's pro-western turn remains far from unanimous, with large swathes of Ukraine's Russophone population opting out of the political process. Nevertheless, De Ploeg argues, the pro-Western and pro-Russian camps are often similar: neoliberal, authoritarian, nationalist and heavily dependent on foreign support. In a wider exploration of Russo-Western relations, he examines similarities between the contemporary Russian state and its NATO counterparts, showing how the two power blocs have collaborated in some of their worst violent excesses. A far cry from civilizational or ideological clashes, De Ploeg argues that the current tensions flow from NATO ́s military dominance and aggressive posture, both globally and within eastern Europe, where Russia seeks to preserve the status-quo. Packed with shocking facts, deftly moving from the local to the international, from the historical to the recent; De Ploeg connects the dots.
