Download or read book Impossible Possible and Improbable written by John Gribbin and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Gribbin has inspired generations with his popular science writing' Jim Al-Khalili A scintillating collection of short essays that really does cover 'life, the Universe, and everything'. From the mysteries of the subatomic world to the curious property of water that makes our planet inhabitable, master of popular science John Gribbin delves into the astonishing facts that underlie our existence. Some aspects of the quantum world really do seem impossible to 'common sense', but have been proved correct by experiments. Other features of the Universe appear obvious, such as the fact that atoms are mostly empty space. But this familiarity hides the truly amazing truths underpinning these observations. And some things merely seem improbable but are also hiding a Deep Truth, such as the fact that the Moon and Sun look the same size as viewed from Earth. This book will change forever the way you view the world.

Download or read book How to Think Impossibly written by Jeffrey J. Kripal and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mind-bending invitation to experience the impossible as fundamentally human. From precognitive dreams and telepathic visions to near-death experiences, UFO encounters, and beyond, so-called impossible phenomena are not supposed to happen. But they do happen—all the time. Jeffrey J. Kripal asserts that the impossible is a function not of reality but of our everchanging assumptions about what is real. How to Think Impossibly invites us to think about these fantastic (yet commonplace) experiences as an essential part of being human, expressive of a deeply shared reality that is neither mental nor material but gives rise to both. Thinking with specific individuals and their extraordinary experiences in vulnerable, open, and often humorous ways, Kripal interweaves humanistic and scientific inquiry to foster an awareness that the fantastic is real, the supernatural is super natural, and the impossible is possible.

Too young to understand the medical jargon that meant she was gone. Too naïve to see that forever was nothing but a fairytale. Now, years later, I meet Ameline. I tried not to fall in love, but it was impossible. She gathered all my broken pieces and put me back together. I knew the only way to keep myself intact was never to love again. But I fell for the illusion of forever once more. At least until I lost her. Now I'm left questioning everything. What does forever mean when it's built on a foundation of pain and loss? How do you move on when lightning keeps targeting your heart? Why bother believing in forever when tomorrow isn’t guaranteed? The Lies About Forever is book one of the Impossibly Possible duet that ends on a jarring cliffhanger that will break you into a million pieces.

Book Karl Barth s Infralapsarian Theology

Download or read book Karl Barth s Infralapsarian Theology written by Shao Kai Tseng and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theologians have long assumed that Karl Barth's doctrine of election is supralapsarian. Challenging decades of scholarship, Shao Kai Tseng argues that despite Barth's stated favor of supralapsarianism, his mature lapsarian theology is complex and dialectical, critically reappropriating both supra- and infralapsarian patterns of thinking. Barth can be described as basically infralapsarian because he sees the object of election as fallen humankind and understands the incarnation as God's act of taking on human nature in its condition of fallenness. In this New Explorations in Theology volume, Tseng shows that most of Barth's Reformed critics have not understood his doctrine of election accurately enough to recognize his affinity to infralapsarianism and, conversely, that most Barthians have not understood Reformed-orthodox formulations of election with sufficient accuracy in their disagreement with the tradition. Karl Barth's Infralapsarian Theology offers a clear understanding of both the historic Lapsarian Controversy and Barth's distinct form of lapsarianism, providing a charitable dialogue partner to aid mutual understanding between Barth and evangelicals. Featuring new monographs with cutting-edge research, New Explorations in Theology provides a platform for constructive, creative work in the areas of systematic, historical, philosophical, biblical, and practical theology.

Letty Russell's answer is "partnership," understood in new ways as a relationship rooted in the life story of Jesus. Instead of concentrating on individuals as single entities, she develops the theme of the individual in partnership--both with God and with Others. She deals with the theological foundations of partnership and such practical concerns as lifestyles, human sexuality, education, church community life, and ministry. Book Vessel of Destruction

Download or read book Vessel of Destruction written by Kel Carpenter and published by Kel Carpenter. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If there is one truth that I hold to in my life, it is that when it rains, it pours. Perhaps that is why I built myself not for the everyday storms most experience. But for the hurricanes I have had to learn to withstand. I know what it is like to feel your heart crack in half like a tree that snaps under too much pressure. I know the bone-deep, all-consuming, numbness that sets in when the wind and the cold and the water become too much. I know the desperation that claws under the surface as you try to wait through the night, and hope that come the dawn, the storm has passed. But perhaps, most importantly, I know how to survive. Or really, I am too spiteful to die. Either way, my world is falling apart around me. Death and destruction are knocking on my door. And a storm is coming. One unlike anything we have ever encountered before. This time it is not Anastasia I will face on the battlefield, but the one who calls to me. The one I cannot face. This is one storm I don’t know if I will survive . . . or if the price of living is too high. *As the characters mature, so does the story. Recommended for readers 16+ in age. Perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Trisha Levenseller, and Tahereh Mafi.*

Book The Impossible State

Download or read book The Impossible State written by Wael B. Hallaq and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wael B. Hallaq boldly argues that the "Islamic state," judged by any standard definition of what the modern state represents, is both impossible and inherently self-contradictory. Comparing the legal, political, moral, and constitutional histories of premodern Islam and Euro-America, he finds the adoption and practice of the modern state to be highly problematic for modern Muslims. He also critiques more expansively modernity's moral predicament, which renders impossible any project resting solely on ethical foundations. The modern state not only suffers from serious legal, political, and constitutional issues, Hallaq argues, but also, by its very nature, fashions a subject inconsistent with what it means to be, or to live as, a Muslim. By Islamic standards, the state's technologies of the self are severely lacking in moral substance, and today's Islamic state, as Hallaq shows, has done little to advance an acceptable form of genuine Shari'a governance. The Islamists' constitutional battles in Egypt and Pakistan, the Islamic legal and political failures of the Iranian Revolution, and similar disappointments underscore this fact. Nevertheless, the state remains the favored template of the Islamists and the ulama (Muslim clergymen). Providing Muslims with a path toward realizing the good life, Hallaq turns to the rich moral resources of Islamic history. Along the way, he proves political and other "crises of Islam" are not unique to the Islamic world nor to the Muslim religion. These crises are integral to the modern condition of both East and West, and by acknowledging these parallels, Muslims can engage more productively with their Western counterparts.

Download or read book Redeeming Words written by David Michael Kleinberg-Levin and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this probing look at Alfred Döblin's 1929 novel Berlin Alexanderplatz and the stories of W. G. Sebald, Redeeming Words offers a philosophical meditation on the power of language in literature. David Kleinberg-Levin draws on the critical theory of Benjamin and Adorno; the idealism and romanticism of Kant, Hegel, Hölderlin, Novalis, and Schelling; and the nineteenth- and twentieth-century thought of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Derrida. He shows how Döblin and Sebald—writers with radically different styles working in different historical moments—have in common a struggle against forces of negativity and an aim to bring about in response a certain redemption of language. Kleinberg-Levin considers the fast-paced, staccato, and hard-cut sentences of Döblin and the ghostly, languorous, and melancholy prose fiction of Sebald to articulate how both writers use language in an attempt to recover and convey this utopian promise of happiness for life in a time of mourning.
