Book Implosion of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete Cylinders Under Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book Implosion of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete Cylinders Under Hydrostatic Pressure written by Joel Aaron Smith and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes an experimental tea program and subsequent analysis devoted to the study of steel fibre reinforced concrete cylinders which implode under hydrostatic water pressure. The cylinders model components of gravity base structures beneath oil and gas platforms in the North Sea. Five cylinders were tested in the Hydraulic Test Facility at the University of Toronto. They had an outer diameter of 610mm, and a thickness of 19mm. The Length-to-outer-diameter ratio varied from 1.0 to 2.5. The total volume of fibre reinforcement was either 1% or 6% of the concrete volume. The cylinders are analyzed using a method developed by Haynes and Nordby, using Olsen's Method which is a popular design method, and finally using RASP ®, a reinforced concrete shell finite element program developed at the University of Toronto. The results of the analyses are compared to experimental results.

Book Design for Implosion of Concrete Cylinder Structures Under Hydrostatic Loading

Download or read book Design for Implosion of Concrete Cylinder Structures Under Hydrostatic Loading written by Harvey H. Haynes and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents updated design guides for both thick- and thin- walled concrete cylinder structures under hydrostatic loading. The design approach for thick-walled cylinders has been changed from that described in previous work to a semi-empirical basis; improvements in implosion strength on the order of 10% are found. A test on a thick-walled 10-ft-diam (3.05-m) structure loaded to failure in the ocean is reported. A major change in the guide is for thin-walled cylinders, where new data on 15 relatively large-scale specimens are reported. Design guides for thin-walled cylinders show an increase in implosion strength ranging from 0% to 35%, depending on the structures' tDo and L/Do ratios, from that reported previously.

Book Behavior of Steel Bar Reinforced Concrete Spheres Under Hydrostatic Loading

Download or read book Behavior of Steel Bar Reinforced Concrete Spheres Under Hydrostatic Loading written by N. D. Albertsen and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four reinforced and two unreinforced concrete spheres of 32.00-inch outside diameter (OD) and 2.71-inch wall thickness (t) were tested under hydrostatic loading to determine the effect of embedded steel reinforcement on structural behavior. Test results show that the reinforced spheres (0.44 or 1.10% steel by area) failed by implosion at values for the ratio of implosion pressure to concrete strength that were on the average 5% lower than for the unreinforced spheres of the same size. In addition, the reinforced spheres developed cracks in-the-plane-of-the-wall at the inner surface of the reinforcement cage prior to implosion. Implosion results for the unreinforced spheres are 10% lower than predicted by an empirical equation developed from previous tests of unreinforced 16-inch OD spheres. These results provide initial insight into the behavior of hydrostatically loaded steel bar reinforced concrete spheres and indicate that additional test data is required before definitive design guides can be developed.

Book Failure of Thick walled Concrete Spheres Subjected to Hydrostatic Loading

Download or read book Failure of Thick walled Concrete Spheres Subjected to Hydrostatic Loading written by H. H. Haynes and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two modes of failure for hollow concrete spheres subjected to hydrostatic pressure loadings are discussed, and the experimental results are presented. The first mode of failure was crack development in the plane of the concrete wall, and the second mode was implosion. From experiments using 16-inch-OD spheres, the difference between the pressures at failure for the two modes ranged from 0 to 50%. Expressions to predict the pressures at initiation of in-plane cracking of the concrete wall and the pressures at implosion are presented. (Author).

Book Sounds from Implosions of Steel Cylinders Under Water

Download or read book Sounds from Implosions of Steel Cylinders Under Water written by Robert S. Price and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure pulses from steel cylindrical tanks imploding under hydrostatic pressure in the ocean are described. Several tanks were recovered after collapse for inspection so that the mode of collapse and resulting damage to the tanks could be correlated with the acoustic measurements. The imploding steel tanks generated acoustic signatures that differed significantly from those produced by underwater explosions and from those produced by underwater implosions of glass bottles. The observed negative onset of the implosion signatures from the steel tanks was apparently caused by the formation of an inward buckle.

Book Experimental and Numerical Study of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete Structures Subjected to Internal Explosion

Download or read book Experimental and Numerical Study of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete Structures Subjected to Internal Explosion written by Nikhil Vasant Moon and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research investigates the effect of an accidental explosion of a steam boiler in a boiler room on steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) structure in an industrial facility, using nonlinear analysis in ABAQUS FEA software. The mechanical properties of SFRC are calculated through testing at the UTA Civil Engineering Laboratory Building. Steel fiber dosages in concrete at different volume fractions are examined for the mechanical properties of concrete. In total, 9 (4" x 8") cylindrical specimens for compressive strength and modulus of elasticity test, 9 (4" x 8") cylindrical specimens for tensile strength test, and 9 (6" x 6" x 21") beam specimens for modulus of rupture test were produced and tested after 28 days of curing. Modulus of Elasticity is found for the different volume fractions of SRFC by stress vs strain curve from experimental tests. Adding 1% of steel fiber in concrete can increase the modulus of elasticity by 11%, compressive strength by 22%, tensile strength by 42%, and modulus of rupture by 32 %. Using the concrete properties obtained from experimental results, numerical analysis is done to find the effect of the Steam Boiler explosion on SFRC boiler room using nonlinear analysis in ABAQUS FEA software. Dynamic/Explicit loading condition is considered for analysis. It's found that adding 1% steel fiber by volume fraction can increase the overall capacity of concrete structure by 26%, decrease strain by 21%, and decrease the deflection by 23%. Parametric studies are also carried out at 1% SFRC by different arrangements of Steam Boiler closed room - with a rigid roof, with a frangible roof and circular vent in the roof. It's found that the reflected pressure due to explosion can be significantly reduced on the surrounding walls. In case, roof with circular vent the stresses decrease by 50%, strain decrease by 70% and with frangible roof stress decrease by 31%, strain by 38% and strain decrease by 38%.

Book Mechanical Properties and Working of Metals and Alloys

Download or read book Mechanical Properties and Working of Metals and Alloys written by Amit Bhaduri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-12 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to serve as core text or handy reference on two key areas of metallic materials: (i) mechanical behavior and properties evaluated by mechanical testing; and (ii) different types of metal working or forming operations to produce useful shapes. The book consists of 16 chapters which are divided into two parts. The first part contains nine chapters which describe tension (including elastic stress – strain relation, relevant theory of plasticity, and strengthening methods), compression, hardness, bending, torsion – pure shear, impact loading, creep and stress rupture, fatigue, and fracture. The second part is composed of seven chapters and covers fundamentals of mechanical working, forging, rolling, extrusion, drawing of flat strip, round bar, and tube, deep drawing, and high-energy rate forming. The book comprises an exhaustive description of mechanical properties evaluated by testing of metals and metal working in sufficient depth and with reasonably wide coverage. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner and includes many solved problems. More than 150 numerical problems and many multiple choice questions as exercise along with their answers have also been provided. The mathematical analyses are well elaborated without skipping any intermediate steps. Slab method of analysis or free-body equilibrium approach is used for the analytical treatment of mechanical working processes. For hot working processes, different frictional conditions (sliding, sticking and mixed sticking–sliding) have been considered to estimate the deformation loads. In addition to the slab method of analysis, this book also contains slip-line field theory, its application to the static system, and the steady state motion, Further, this book includes upper-bound theorem, and upper-bound solutions for indentation, compression, extrusion and strip drawing. The book can be used to teach graduate and undergraduate courses offered to students of mechanical, aerospace, production, manufacturing and metallurgical engineering disciplines. The book can also be used for metallurgists and practicing engineers in industry and development courses in the metallurgy and metallic manufacturing industries.
