Book Implicit Theories of Intelligence and Their Effects on the Elementary Classroom

Download or read book Implicit Theories of Intelligence and Their Effects on the Elementary Classroom written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this literature review thesis was to determine the effects of implicit self-theories on the elementary classroom. This research focused on the implications of an incremental self-theory versus an entity self theory in elementary students as well as its relationship with both motivation and academic achievement. Self-theory is the belief individuals have about themselves, their qualities, and their abilities. An entity theory, also referred to as a fixed mindset, is the belief that intelligence is innate within us and cannot be changed. An incremental theory, also referred to as a growth mindset, is the belief that intelligence can be increased through effort and strategy use. Studies showed that students with an incremental mindset were more likely to demonstrate characteristics associated with high academic achievement and longevity in education than an entity mindset. As a result, this research studies and discuses strategies to foster an incremental mindset in elementary students. When employed, these strategies displayed a possibility for an entity mindset to shift to an incremental mindset , and subsequently develop and/or increase characteristics associated with high academic success."--leaf 4.

Book Children s Implicit Beliefs about Intelligence

Download or read book Children s Implicit Beliefs about Intelligence written by Carly R. Champagne and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young children are commonly perceived as highly optimistic and confident, and therefore seldom arouse concern as to how they are impacted by academic failure. However, there is evidence to suggest that young children can indeed be negatively affected by failure experiences. Implicit theories of intelligence can provide individuals with a framework by which to perceive failure, though little is known about when these theories begin to develop. The current study explores whether children as young as three and a half to four years of age demonstrate patterns indicative of incremental or entity theories of intelligence as a response to challenge following failure. Children worked on a series of puzzles, some of which were impossible to solve. Children then chose puzzles to do again and provided reasons for their choices. Procedures were adapted from Smiley and Dweck (1994), with an added feedback condition of effort or ability. Descriptive comparisons confirmed the hypotheses that children would differ in their approach to challenge following failure; children who chose to approach challenge more often chose insoluble puzzles and those who avoided challenge more often chose soluble puzzles. In addition, challenge approach children expressed less performance concern, negative self-evaluation, and disengagement than children who avoided challenge. Finally, children who received ability related feedback more often chose soluble puzzles than those who received effort feedback. This study suggests that even at three and half years old, children react differently to achievement related information. It is possible that at this time, children are in the process of developing implicit theories of intelligence that could direct their future cognitions, affect, and behavior in the classroom.

Book excerpt: This innovative text sheds light on how people work -- why they sometimes function well and, at other times, behave in ways that are self-defeating or destructive. The author presents her groundbreaking research on adaptive and maladaptive cognitive-motivational patterns and shows: * How these patterns originate in people's self-theories * Their consequences for the person -- for achievement, social relationships, and emotional well-being * Their consequences for society, from issues of human potential to stereotyping and intergroup relations * The experiences that create them This outstanding text is a must-read for researchers in social psychology, child development, and education, and is appropriate for both graduate and senior undergraduate students in these areas.

Book Noncognitive Skills in the Classroom

Download or read book Noncognitive Skills in the Classroom written by Jeffrey A. Rosen and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2010-09-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of recent research on the relationship between noncognitive attributes (motivation, self efficacy, resilience) and academic outcomes (such as grades or test scores). We focus primarily on how these sets of attributes are measured and how they relate to important academic outcomes. Noncognitive attributes are those academically and occupationally relevant skills and traits that are not “cognitive”—that is, not specifically intellectual or analytical in nature. We examine seven attributes in depth and critique the measurement approaches used by researchers and talk about how they can be improved.

Book Liberating The Learner

Download or read book Liberating The Learner written by Terry Atkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is clear evidence that the quality of children's learning in school is very dependant on the style of the teacher's approach and the learning environment he or she creates. This, in turn, is a reflection of teachers own beliefs, anxieties and enthusiasms about learning, often gained through their own educational experiences. This edited volume provides a new framework for exploring teachers' views on a whole range of professional issues, for instance the nature of teaching and learning, the needs of students, and their own abilities as learners. Within this is presented a variety of case studies which illustrate how teachers' views impact upon students' learning. The book builds on the well established assumption that teachers are themselves also learners and that the learning processes involved in professional development are in many ways the same as those involved in a classroom context. It shows how the conclusions drawn from this study can be used in a practical way to assist teachers' professional development throughout their career. All teacher trainers and mentors who take seriously their role of helping children to be resourceful, resilient and reflective learners will find that this book helps them to achieve this aim.
