Book excerpt: Memory-impairment can arise from illness or injury, leaving individuals permanently handicapped by an inability to learn new information. The breakdown in memory processes is not uniform, and a set of unconscious memory abilities, referred to as "implicit memory", remains intact. The first section of this thesis reviews research findings concerning implicit memory in amnesic patients, and considers the possibility that implicit memory might be exploited to help memory-impaired people acquire new information. A teaching method widely believed to operated in this way is the "method of vanishing cues", which teaches verbal associations by showing the response word stem (e. g. sa- _) and gradually fading out the letter cues. A review of research into vanishing cues is presented, showing the method to be an effective means of teaching memory-impaired people, but one which is poorly understood. The second section of this thesis presents a series of studies with memory impaired and normal participants. The studies explore the vanishing cues method, and evaluate it against a traditional rote-learning method which makes no attempt to exploit implicit memory. Although the vanishing cues method was generally preferred by memory-impaired learners, no evidence was found for the claim that it exploits implicit memory. In fact the method was actually less effective for some memory-impaired people than the traditional method. The third section of this thesis reports the development of a new teaching method, "fragment revision", in which word fragments (e. g. _av _) were employed to ensure that implicit memory was engaged during learning. Again this method was evaluated by comparing it with a traditional method which does not target implicit memory. Experiments with young normal subjects showed that fragment revision successfully exploited implicit memory in this population, but subjects with normal age-related memory loss or more serious memory-impairments showed no advantage for fragment revision over the traditional method. Reasons for the discrepancy in findings are discussed. The fourth and final section of this thesis presents an overall discussion of the results reported, and concludes that although memory-impaired people may acquire implicit memory for new associations, these associations cannot be exploited to facilitate consciously-accessible learning. Future directions for research into improving teaching methods for memory-impaired people are considered.
