Book Changing Realities in Southern Africa

Download or read book Changing Realities in Southern Africa written by Michael Clough and published by Institute of International Studies University of California. This book was released on 1982 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This uneven collection of essays on the international aspects of the conflict in Southern Africa brings together seven contributions by authors with quite different political perspectives. In addition to articles on Zimbabwe, SADCC and South Africa's regional policy, there are two essays dealing specifically with Namibia. "From South West Africa to Namibia" (p.61-91) is written by the editor, an assistant professor at the Naval Graduate School. The main concern of the author is to urge the US Administration to promote an international settlement by putting pressure on South Africa, arguing that a prolongation of the conflict "will shift the balance of power within SWAPO in favor of the factions most hostile to the United States and less willing to compromise". In "One Namibia, one nation: the political economy of transition" (p. 92-122), R.H. Green focuses on the colonial economy and the transitional period from a position close to SWAPO. (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

The independence of Namibia and recent events in South Africa place U.S. foreign policy in Southern Africa at a crossroads. How the United States responds to the needs of the new Namibian government could have significant implications for U.S. relationships in Southern Africa. This study will review Namibia's preparedness for independence and U.S. interests in Namibia. It will recommend a foreign policy for future United States dealings with Namibia.

Book Cold War in Southern Africa

Download or read book Cold War in Southern Africa written by Sue Onslow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume examines the complexities of the Cold War in Southern Africa and uses a range of archives to develop a more detailed understanding of the impact of the Cold War environment upon the processes of political change. In the aftermath of European decolonization, the struggle between white minority governments and black liberation movements encouraged both sides to appeal for external support from the two superpower blocs. Cold War in Southern Africa highlights the importance of the global ideological environment on the perceptions and consequent behaviour of the white minority regimes, the Black Nationalist movements, and the newly independent African nationalist governments. Together, they underline the variety of archival sources on the history of Southern Africa in the Cold War and its growing importance in Cold War Studies. This volume brings together a series of essays by leading scholars based on a wide range of sources in the United States, Russia, Cuba, Britain, Zambia and South Africa. By focussing on a range of independent actors, these essays highlight the complexity of the conflict in Southern Africa: a battle of power blocs, of systems and ideas, which intersected with notions and practices of race and class This book will appeal to students of cold war studies, US foreign policy, African politics and International History. Sue Onslow has taught at the London School of Economics since 1994. She is currently a Cold War Studies Fellow in the Cold War Studies Centre/IDEAS

Book Finland and National Liberation in Southern Africa

Download or read book Finland and National Liberation in Southern Africa written by Iina Soiri and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1999 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finland's special characteristics as a Nordic, non-aligned welfare state gave it the resources and motivation to support liberation movements - in spite of restrictions arising from trade interests and a reluctance to jeopardise the country's neutral image. The study shows that, although it is not an easy task, in a democracy ordinary, dedicated people can, over time, influence political decision making at its most closed and guarded area, foreign politics.

Book Re Viewing Resistance in Namibian History

Download or read book Re Viewing Resistance in Namibian History written by Silvester, Jeremy and published by University of Namibia Press. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-Viewing Resistance in Namibian History brings together the work of experienced academics and a new wave of young Namibian historians - architects of the past - who are working on a range of public history and heritage projects, from late nineteenth century resistance to the use of songs, from the role of gender in SWAPO's camps to memorialisation, and from international solidarity to aspects of the history of Kavango and Caprivi. In a culturally and politically diverse democracy such as Namibia, there are bound to be different perspectives on the past, and history will be as plural as the history-tellers. The chapters in this book reflect this diversity, and combine to create a remarkable collection of divergent voices, providing alternative perspectives on the past. Re-Viewing Resistance in Namibian History writes 'forgotten' people into history; provides a reading of the past that reflects the tensions and competing identities that pervaded 'the struggle'; and deals with 'heritage that hurts'.
