Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal will continue to provide a major portion of energy requirements in the United States for at least the next several decades. It is imperative that accurate information describing the amount, location, and quality of the coal resources and reserves be available to fulfill energy needs. It is also important that the United States extract its coal resources efficiently, safely, and in an environmentally responsible manner. A renewed focus on federal support for coal-related research, coordinated across agencies and with the active participation of the states and industrial sector, is a critical element for each of these requirements. Coal focuses on the research and development needs and priorities in the areas of coal resource and reserve assessments, coal mining and processing, transportation of coal and coal products, and coal utilization.

Book Environmental Impacts of Coal Mining Utilization

Download or read book Environmental Impacts of Coal Mining Utilization written by M.J. Chadwick and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As coal is considered as a substitute for other fuels, more serious attention is being given to the environmental impacts of the whole coal fuel cycle: mining, transport, storage, combustion and conversion. This volume presents an up-to-date account of these environmental impacts and the recent developments to combat and control them. A feature of the book is the way in which it discusses not only the experience and developments in North America and Western Europe but also presents much information made available for this study on the developments in the socialist countries of Eastern Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois Coal: Markets and Delivery Systems The study identifies the transportation facilities used to move coal in 1980 and the facilities which are expected to carry coal in 1990. The analysis of the 1980 system was based on actual coal traffic patterns. For Illinois-produced coal, the total study tonnage of 59 million tons for 1980 represents 94 percent of the million tons of coal produced that year. Existing long-term coal contracts between mining companies and utilities were used to project the 1990 coal markets and transportation system that will be needed to reach these markets. To enhance the understanding of the role of transportation in the marketability of coal, the study includes background on coal reserves and production, a domestic market analysis for Illinois coal, and an assessment of the potential for exporting Illinois coal to foreign markets. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, Proceedings of the Conference ACID RAIN: Economic Assessment, is meant to present the areas of agreement which economists have established and the uncertainties which they have discovered in their attempts to use the methodology of economics to better understand the nature of the acid rain issue. Scientific articles about acid rain initially appeared in 1972. The public turned its attention to the issue in the mid-1970s. In April 1979, the first acid rain bill was introduced in the Senate, authored by New York's Senator Daniel P. Moynihan. The bill sought to establish a federal research program dedicated to filling the gaps in understanding of the phenomena of long-range transport of air pollutants and their environmental, health and economic impacts. 'The bill was passed into law in 1980. Since then, tens of bills have been proposed to control emissions of S02 and NO , x thought to be the precursors of acid rain. And yet, in contrast with the pattern set by the majority of environmental issues, where legislation followed very quickly on the heels of public anxiety and involvement, by July 1985 not a single federal acid rain control bill had been passed.
