Book Implications of Deforestation to the Livelihoods in Kasulu Tanzania

Download or read book Implications of Deforestation to the Livelihoods in Kasulu Tanzania written by Edmund Mabhuye and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manuscript is a MSc. Dissertation which highlights the implications of deforestation to the livelihoods of local communities in Kasulu District, Tanzania. It presents spatial and temporal forest cover changes, underlying and immediate causes of deforestation, and impacts of deforestation to socio-economic activities; and evaluate forest conservation measures. Field surveys were conducted using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Remote sensing and GIS analysis show that Kasulu district has been facing deforestation since 1980s; and there was no uniform forest cover from 1986 to 2009 in the study area. Deforestation has been largely attributed to rapid population growth including large influxes of refugees, and poor implementation of forest conservation and management strategies, agricultural expansion, and poverty. As a result, deforestation has been undermining economic, social and natural resources base. This study recommended awareness creation, promoting aforestation, reforestation and agro-forestry; participatory forest management strategies, and promoting income generating activities to reduce pressure on forest resources.

Book Realities on Deforestation in Tanzania Trends Drivers Implications and the Way Forward

Download or read book Realities on Deforestation in Tanzania Trends Drivers Implications and the Way Forward written by Jafari R. Kideghesho and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deforestation ranks at the top in the global environmental agenda. Its importance is prompted by economic and ecological roles played by the forests and the notable adverse effects caused by deforestation on human and other species. These effects include biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emissions, disruption of water cycles, increasing soil erosion and disruption of livelihoods. Deforestation rate is more serious in tropical countries where human population growth is high with extreme poverty. Tanzania, one of the tropical countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, is not exempted from these scenarios. This chapter provides some insights on deforestation problem in Tanzania with emphasis on status and trends, major drivers, ecological impacts and current efforts geared towards addressing this problem. Finally, the chapter offers some recommendations to pre-empt further impacts associated with the problem.

Book Multilevel governance carbon management and land use decisions in Tanzania

Download or read book Multilevel governance carbon management and land use decisions in Tanzania written by Kijazi, M. and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2017-06-05 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who makes land-use decisions, how are those decisions made, and who influences whom, how and why? This working paper is part of a series based on research studying multilevel decision-making institutions and processes. The series is aimed at providing insight into why efforts to keep forests standing, such as initiatives like Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), are still so far from altering development trajectories. It underlines the importance of understanding the politics of multilevel governance in forest, land and climate policy and practice, and identifies potential ways forward, while highlighting the role of conservation and sustainable management of forests for the enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries.

Book Land Degradation in Tanzania

Download or read book Land Degradation in Tanzania written by Alemneh Dejene and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Technical Paper No. 370. Local land users and officials often have conflicting perceptions of and responses to land degradation issues. This causes problems for officials in diagnosing and addressing the issue and is a major constraint on the successful implementation of policies and projects to address land degradation. This study looks at the perception and response gap between officials and land users in the diagnosis and remedy of land degradation. It also examines the dynamics of the loss of soil fertility and low productivity at the village level. The study's findings will help shape investment programs to enhance land productivity in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Book Impacts of Changing Pastoral Strategies on Environmental Resources and Livelihoods in Tanzania s Lake Victoria Basin

Download or read book Impacts of Changing Pastoral Strategies on Environmental Resources and Livelihoods in Tanzania s Lake Victoria Basin written by Elliott Phillemons Niboye and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land tenure in pastoral and agro pastoral areas of Tanzania is under stress. The stress emanates mainly from changing natural and demographic environments. Other underlying causes are social, economic and political changes. In the past three to four decades, both pastoral and agro-pastoral areas have been experiencing rapid population increase, with a national mean population growth rate estimated at 3 per cent per annum (Kurian 1992). This has increased demand for cultivation lands, forcing pastoralists and agro-pastoralists to more marginal areas and triggering off in some cases environmental degradation process. These processes are paralleled by overall climatic changes with concomitant increasing droughts. The combined effect of these processes has culminated into a general decline of pastoral and agro-pastoral communityis welfare and increased livelihood insecurity. This study explored the impacts of these changes in agro-pastoral land use on the physical environment as well as livelihood and welfare of the community in Missungwi District.

Book Policy Implications on Environment

Download or read book Policy Implications on Environment written by I. S. Kikula and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1997 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional methods of land management through rapid change in the name of "development" have led to land degradation. Resettlement during villagisation increased the human and livestock population. The concentration of this increased population into nucleated settlements and the rigid so-called "land-use plans" meant a complete disruption of the traditional land management system. This study points towards the need for educational and awareness programs to go along with policies which have environmental implications.

Book Towards Sustainable Forest Management in Tanzania

Download or read book Towards Sustainable Forest Management in Tanzania written by Evodius Waziri Rutta and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable forest management (SFM) is crucial for the socio-economic development of forest-rich communities. Given its abundance of forest resources, Tanzania has adopted forest policy strategies that aim to enhance SFM through the active engagement of rural communities in forest management. Despite policy progress, Tanzania's forest sector continues to face several institutional and policy implementation challenges. Using a qualitative case study approach and the DPSIR framework, this study critically examined forest policy gaps impeding sustainable forest management in the Rufiji district of Tanzania. Data were obtained through document reviews, a workshop and semi-structured interviews with experts in the forest sector. The study found that existing forest management strategies do not adequately address key drivers of forest loss thereby hindering SFM progress in the country. Additionally, although the forest sector offers enormous opportunities to improve livelihoods and local economies, the lack of market-based policy instruments is a major barrier.

Book Climate Change and Coastal Resources in Tanzania

Download or read book Climate Change and Coastal Resources in Tanzania written by Pius Zebhe Yanda and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume synthesizes research from a five year program supported by the Norwegian Agency for Development to assess how coastal communities in Tanzania can adapt to climate change impacts such as sea level rise, and better assert their rights to implement decisions regarding coastal resource management in the context of global climate change. Throughout ten chapters, the book deploys a holistic approach to adopt a conceptual model of socio-ecological systems, and characterize human-nature interactions in an integrative way to understand anthropogenic pressures on ecosystems to guide conservation and management. The book will be of interest to researchers, students studying environmental management and climate change, planners, and policy makers. The book begins by describing the biophysical and socio-economic characteristics of the Tanzanian coastal environment, then discusses the impacts of climate change on coastal resource governance, community vulnerability, and livelihood security. Then, intervention strategies are offered as a means for local communities to not only adapt to climate change impacts, but also to engage in decision-making processes to assess vulnerabilities and address challenges and limitations through educated measures. The final chapters discuss the vulnerability and adaptation of coastal communities to climate change impacts to assess how livelihoods are constructed in response to impacts, and summarize the key findings to determine the best adaptation strategies to improve adaptive capacity and reduce socio-economic vulnerability.
