First, it examines the major philosophical systems and ideologies that have shaped educational thought and practice. Second, it outlines certain ideas from philosophy and ideology to illustrate how these disciplines contribute to educational theory. Third, in seeking to provide a context for educational philosophy, ideology, and theory, it includes biographical sketches of principal originators or contributors of leading ideas about education. Book Vocational and Professional Capability

Download or read book Vocational and Professional Capability written by Gerard Lum and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central claim of this fascinating monograph is that strategies for vocational and professional education adopted by the UK over the last two decades are founded upon a number of fundamental and fatal errors. The essential problem is that these strategies derive from a number of philosophical confusions about what it is to be skilled, competent or capable. The aim of the book is to unravel the philosophical assumptions at the heart of current strategies, examine their shortcomings and propose a more coherent account of vocational and professional capability. It will be argued that not only does this have serious practical implications for the vocational curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment, but that it indicates the need for an urgent and radical reassessment of the relationship between vocational, general and academic education.

Book Power and International Relations

Download or read book Power and International Relations written by David A. Baldwin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to conventional wisdom, the concept of power has not always been central to international relations theory. During the 1920s and 30s, power was often ignored or vilified by international relations scholars—especially in America. Power and International Relations explores how this changed in later decades by tracing how power emerged as an important social science concept in American scholarship after World War I. Combining intellectual history and conceptual analysis, David Baldwin examines power's increased presence in the study of international relations and looks at how the three dominant approaches of realism, neoliberalism, and constructivism treat power. The clarity and precision of thinking about power increased greatly during the last half of the twentieth century, due to efforts by political scientists, psychologists, sociologists, economists, philosophers, mathematicians, and geographers who contributed to "social power literature." Baldwin brings the insights of this literature to bear on the three principal theoretical traditions in international relations theory. He discusses controversial issues in power analysis, and shows the relevance of older works frequently underappreciated today. Focusing on the social power perspective in international relations, this book sheds light on how power has been considered during the last half century and how it should be approached in future research.

Book The Return of the Academy

Download or read book The Return of the Academy written by Robin Hilary Hextrum and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s a movement called classical realism has grown across North America and Europe. Classical realist painters reject modern and contemporary art in favor of traditional academic painterly practices. This thesis investigates the origins and implications of the presence of this movement within the context of art education. This paper considers the role of pastiche in the philosophy of the classical realist movement, the similarities and differences between the 21st century classical realist atelier and academies of the past, and the ways in which the atelier offers a simplified alternative model of education in the face of contradictory art educational models. Citing work by Howard Singerman, James Elkins, and Nicholas Houghton, this thesis builds on commentary about the role of education in shaping the artist and the art world. In this case, classical realism provides a window into larger issues at stake in both art education and the contemporary art world.
