Book Sustainable Intensification

Download or read book Sustainable Intensification written by Jules N. Pretty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continued population growth, rapidly changing consumption patterns and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation are driving limited resources of food, energy, water and materials towards critical thresholds worldwide. These pressures are likely to be substantial across Africa, where countries will have to find innovative ways to boost crop and livestock production to avoid becoming more reliant on imports and food aid. Sustainable agricultural intensification - producing more output from the same area of land while reducing the negative environmental impacts - represents a solution for millions of African farmers. This volume presents the lessons learned from 40 sustainable agricultural intensification programmes in 20 countries across Africa, commissioned as part of the UK Government's Foresight project. Through detailed case studies, the authors of each chapter examine how to develop productive and sustainable agricultural systems and how to scale up these systems to reach many more millions of people in the future. Themes covered include crop improvements, agroforestry and soil conservation, conservation agriculture, integrated pest management, horticulture, livestock and fodder crops, aquaculture, and novel policies and partnerships.

Book Systems approaches for agricultural development

Download or read book Systems approaches for agricultural development written by F.W.T Penning de Vries and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is changing rapidly all over the world. Intensification, diversification, optimizing scarce resources, integrated pest management, sustainability and climate change are key issues for agricultural institutes. The best solutions will be found by integrating disciplines. Organized thinking about future farming requires forecasting of the implications of alternative ways to farm and to develop agriculture. Systems thinking and systems simulation are indispensable tools for such integration and extrapolation. About 150 scientists and senior research leaders from all over the world participated in the symposium `Systems Approaches for Agricultural Development' to discuss these issues. The symposium reviewed the status of systems research and modeling in agriculture, with special reference to evaluating their efficacy and efficiency for achieving research goals, and to their application in developing countries, promoted international cooperation in modeling, and increased awareness of systems research and simulation. This book comprises the papers on the technical subjects. Well informed authors describe and illustrate how systems research was used to improve agricultural production systems of all continents and in diverse environments.

Book Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization A Framework for Africa

Download or read book Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization A Framework for Africa written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This framework presents ten interrelated principles/elements to guide Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization in Africa (SAMA). Further, it presents the technical issues to be considered under SAMA and the options to be analysed at the country and sub regional levels. The ten key elements required in a framework for SAMA are as follows: The analysis in the framework calls for a specific approach, involving learning from other parts of the world where significant transformation of the agricultural mechanization sector has already occurred within a three-to-four decade time frame, and developing policies and programmes to realize Africa’s aspirations of Zero Hunger by 2025. This approach entails the identification and prioritization of relevant and interrelated elements to help countries develop strategies and practical development plans that create synergies in line with their agricultural transformation plans. Given the unique characteristics of each country and the diverse needs of Africa due to the ecological heterogeneity and the wide range of farm sizes, the framework avoids being prescriptive.

Book Thailand s Smart Agriculture and Its Impacts on Thai Farmers

Download or read book Thailand s Smart Agriculture and Its Impacts on Thai Farmers written by Yanisa Meechoovet and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart agriculture driven by technologies is one of the agriculture strategies under the 20-year Thailand's national strategy, laid out in 2018, on competitive enhancement strategy which has been developed to achieve value-added agriculture and improve Thai agriculture to meet the global demand and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. This study examines Thai agricultural sector's problems by using agriculture sector in Ayutthaya Province as a case study. The study also examines the implementation of the smart agriculture in Ayutthaya Province by focusing on its advantages and disadvantages and offers appropriate solutions for greater development. The data were collected using semi-structure interviews with 18 key informants who have relevant experience in the area of agriculture and smart agriculture technologies. The results of the interviews illustrated the current situation of the agricultural sector such as the problems of irrigation system management, high production cost, and a decline in the agricultural commodity prices. The results also indicated advantages and disadvantages of the smart agriculture used to develop Thai agricultural sector. The smart agriculture can help reduce the production costs, increase productivity in terms of quantity and quality, and help reduce the use of labor. However, some groups of farmers, especially the elderly, deny using the smart agriculture as it is costly, and they do not have sufficient background knowledge about technologies.
