Book A Report on Earned Value Management

Download or read book A Report on Earned Value Management written by Richards MacDonald and published by . This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A, The University of Chicago, language: English, abstract: This paper recommends an established method comprising of time dependence into Earned Value (EV) management. The criterion needs three parameters, which outline directly to the basic triad control of scope, cost and schedule - the decline rate of activities, the cost prevails over parameter, and the time to fix the declined activities. Time related aspects for the planned value, received value, and genuine cost are acknowledged, along with the cost performance index (CPI) and schedule performance index (SPI). Earned Value Management (EVM) method is usually represented as a management tactic that influences resource planning and practice to programs and to technical presentation demand. More particularly, EVM can be believed to bring cost and schedule deviation analysis in order to provide managers with a more precise standing of a project. Increasing global rivalry and speedy industrial developments are exerting many firms to give more concentration to develop the control of both their in-house projects and those being done for customers. The major purpose of this paper is to map the research intended at establishing an EVM implementation model (framework) to assist in applying EVM more competently to projects in a variety of industries and government organizations. An extra focus is to conclude what distinctness, if any, are present between applying EVM in various types of projects and organizations in the United States (Warburton, 2011).

Book Applying Earned Value Management to Design Bid Build Projects to Assess Productivity Disruption

Download or read book Applying Earned Value Management to Design Bid Build Projects to Assess Productivity Disruption written by Stephen P. Warhoe and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important jobs of a project manager is to manage a project's budget and schedule. These tasks can easily be very difficult to accomplish on projects that are complex, especially since successful project execution relies heavily on people who are expected to perform their roles individually and as a team. One of the most difficult aspects of managing projects is estimating how fast and effectively humans will perform a task; that is, determining how productive workers collectively will be each day, each week, or within any time period during the life of a project. Because projects are unique and are typically one-off endeavors, there is usually little previous empirical data to rely upon for the project manager to forecast productivity before or during the project's execution. The crux of the problem lies with adequately identifying not only the labor work flow process, but also the influences that affect the work flow process. When scope changes are introduced into the work flow of a project, the types and number of influences and their cause and effect relationships can significantly increase in numbers. This phenomenon often turns complicated projects into extremely complex ones and the final outcome can be greater than the sum of the individual inputs. For project managers who are unable to get their arms around this very real situation, forecasting the outcome of a project often becomes out of control, especially for projects that are large and heavily labor intensive. This study takes a post-positivist approach to design and builds a system dynamic model with which construction projects that are delivered using the design-bid-build methodology can be simulated to show generically how the influences that affect construction projects can affect worker productivity. No other studies are known to exist that design or build such a model for construction projects that use the design-bid-build delivery method. The model that was designed in the study is based on the works of several academics' works as well as the input of several experts in the construction field, including this study's author. As opposed to attempting to create a simulation model based on the uniqueness of a single project, a "mosaic" approach was used in creating the model in that elements of the model were identified and taken from studies found through the literature review as well as interviews with construction industry experts. The stock and flow structure of the study's model is intended to be a composite of many construction projects and can be used for any project delivered using the design-bid-build methodology. From the research, the model was created and tested using good modeling practice in that the model testing phase followed the process created by one of the pre-eminent system dynamic modelers in the world (refer to Sterman, 2000). The result is a model that simulates the work flow of labor hours in a design-bid-build construction project which can be affected by an immeasurable number of influences that can and do occur on construction projects.

Book Value Driven Project Management

Download or read book Value Driven Project Management written by Harold Kerzner and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the traditional view of project management, if a project manager completed a project and had adhered to the triple constraints of time, cost, and performance, the project was considered a success. Today, in the eyes of the customer and the parent or sponsoring company, if a completed project did not deliver its anticipated value, it would be seen as a failure. Today's changing economic climate, marked by an increasingly competitive global environment, is driving project managers to become more business oriented. Projects must now be viewed from a strategic perspective within the context of a business or enterprise that needs to provide value to both the customer and the organization itself. As a result, project managers are now required to possess the skills to complete a project within certain specifications, and also know how to create and deliver value. Responding to the needs of today's project managers, Value-Driven Project Management begins by changing the paradigm of project management. Rather than judge the success of a project from the perspectives of time, budget, and quality, the authors demonstrate why success is only achieved when planned business values are met, including: Internal value Financial value Future value Customer-related value The authors also offer best practices that allow you and your organization to create additional value in efficiency, customer satisfaction, and enhanced products and services. Finally, the book helps you incorporate value into clearly defined business objectives and "sell" the value-driven process to executives. Throughout the book, helpful illustrations clarify complex concepts and processes. Assigning valuable resources to projects that don't provide some tangible form of value to the organization and to the client is poor management and poor decision-making. On the other hand, selecting and implementing projects that will deliver value and an acceptable return on investment is effective management and decision-making, but is very challenging, especially when a project may not provide its target value for years to come. With Value-Driven Project Management in hand, you'll discover the tools you need to ensure that projects deliver true value upon their completion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earned value is a powerful approach for evaluating true project performance. It also provides a quantitative basis for estimating actual completion time and actual cost at completion. However, the effective use of this technique is rare outside of the U.S. government and its contractors. There are several reasons for this general lack of use. This paper presents the implementation problems and also some methodology and specific techniques to overcome each of these problems, thus providing an effective and relatively easy implementation of earned value.

This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, Congress, in the conference report, H.R. 105-271, to the FY1998 Energy and Water Development Appropriation Bill, directed the National Research Council (NRC) to carry out a series of assessments of project management at the Department of Energy (DOE). The final report in that series noted that DOE lacked an objective set of measures for assessing project management quality. The department set up a committee to develop performance measures and benchmarking procedures and asked the NRC for assistance in this effort. This report presents information and guidance for use as a first step toward development of a viable methodology to suit DOE's needs.
