However, no matter what the precise number is, the high school dropout rate in America is simply too high. Numerous studies bring to life the negative consequences of dropping out of school for both the individual and society as a whole. Dropout Prevention: A Program That Works will not detail such consequences; rather, it will provide a roadmap for schools and districts that want to and must implement an effective dropout prevention program in order to best serve students. The following analogy stresses the importance of implementing an effective dropout prevention program immediately: When an obese person has a heart attack and is taken to the emergency room, the hospital first sends in the doctor to sustain the patient and try to save his life. The hospital does not first call in a nutritionist to discuss the patient's poor diet and lack of exercise. Currently, there are thousands of high school students dying on the ER table listening to a nutritionist.Too often educators say, “I need to see the research supporting that program” before they are willing to implement. But how much research is necessary? Is it enough to see an effective program at another school? Or do you need to have multiple longitudinal studies documenting the results before you are willing to act? Many at-risk students simply cannot wait for the research to be conducted and the data compiled: they are on the ER table and need an alternative solution today. Book excerpt: This study's purpose was to investigate if the dropout prevention program, Check and Connect, was effective and what the proper age of implementation should be. When determining the effectiveness of the program and proper age of implementation the research will include a survey where the opinions of educators who participate in the program are expressed, interviews with neighboring districts that implement the program, and collection of quantitative data through national and state education websites. This investigation will look into three main components being truancy, dropout rates, and behavior incidents. It will collect data given the main objectives from other schools that implement the program and compare the outcomes to the school of study. Reasoning for student drop outs should be taken into account when developing a dropout prevention program along with a proper identification model for at-risk students. The results revealed that the program had been effective in decreasing at least one of the following, truancy, dropout rates or behavior incidents, which is what the Check and Connect program focuses on. The study also showed that at the primary school of study dropout rates had drastically decreased four years after the implementation of the program. Finally, a common consensus from surveys and interviews revealed that the best age for the program to be implemented would be at the middle school level.

Book excerpt: The Alliance for Excellent Education (2011) estimates every 26 seconds in America, a student drops out of school. Numerous intervention and prevention approaches have been implemented to reduce the incidents of school dropout. One program, Communities In Schools (CIS), has shown promise in impacting the issue of school dropout by attending to both academic and non-academic factors at play in influencing a student's risk for dropping out. The primary aim of this secondary data analysis was to develop an increased understanding of CIS services, to explore whether service provision varies systematically in relation to student outcomes and student characteristics, and to gain initial understandings of whether service provision is related to end-of-year outcomes. The volume of services provided was examined in terms of the number of service categories received and the amount of services (in hours) received. Bivariate statistical tests were used to examine the differences in the two service volumes based on student characteristics and prior year outcomes. The findings suggest that the total number of services received and the total number of hours of services received does not significantly vary by student characteristics or prior year outcomes. However, significant differences were found in the number of hours of distinct service categories and prior year outcomes. Multiple regression analyses were employed to examine in what ways services were related to student outcomes. The findings indicate that specific services are associated with better outcomes. Practice and future research implications are discussed.
