Book Investigating the Potentiality of Community based Mobile Monitoring for Household Water Management Practices and Public Water Services in Rural Tanzania

Download or read book Investigating the Potentiality of Community based Mobile Monitoring for Household Water Management Practices and Public Water Services in Rural Tanzania written by Doreen Kyando and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 6.1) calls for "universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030". Yet, by 2020, approximately 54% of Tanzania's rural population still lacks basic drinking water services. Governance-related issues such as ineffective monitoring, weak accountability of actors and limited information sharing among actors are largely attributed to the problem. The need to address service delivery performance failures through improving sector governance and promoting the adoption of household water treatment and safe storage practices (HWTS) is crucial. Community-based monitoring (CBM) has emerged as a prominent approach to improving governance and public services. To date, however, there is a knowledge gap on the extent to which CBM can influence public water services, household behavior changes and information exchange among actors in water service. We implemented a Fuatilia Maji action research project with two parallel interventions, mobile-enhanced CBM and mobile-enhanced expert-based monitoring (EBM) and compared with an existing government monitoring system to examine the extent of information sharing among actors in the decentralized water service delivery, investigate the effect and differential effect of CBM and EBM interventions on improving water point functionality, microbial water quality and household safe water behaviors in Mvomero and Morogoro district council, Tanzania. We employ a multiphase evaluation mixed methods design with explanatory sequential design elements. We collected data using surveys, interviews, focus group discussions and documentary reviews. Multiple data analysis techniques were employed, including Social Network Analysis (SNA), differences in difference with kernel matching and generalized linear mixed model. Thematic analysis was conducted to explain the quantitative results further. This thesis reveals that there seems to be a discrepancy between theoretical and actual water-related information networks. Some actors, e.g., Village Chairpersons, seem to perform well, while others, e.g., COWSO/CBWOs and Ward Executive Officer, underperform. Information exchange is more intense among duty bearers within the governance level (i.e., district) than between the governance levels (i.e., district to village). Downwards exchange, i.e., from the higher to the lower governance level (e.g., from district to village) and between gender groups, are the major bottlenecks. Provision of personalized water quality info was more likely to influence drinking water fetching behavior (i.e., choosing improved sources) but not practising other household safe water behaviors (i.e., using effective HWTS) in both interventions; however, the differential treatment was considerably higher in the CBM than EBM intervention. Moreover, there were no statistically discernable differences between CBM and EBM in improving water point functionality and microbial water quality over time. Overall, this thesis highlights the usefulness of innovatively integrating social accountability, social capital and evaluation use and behavior change concepts/ theories when designing the theory of change (ToC) for CBM and EBM interventions, as well as evaluating why and how the intervention worked or failed. Also, it pinpoints the importance of using SNA in mapping and examining information sharing among multiple actors. The use of SNA to examine the extent of formal and informal information exchange with valued ties, the inclusion of school children as agents of WASH behavior change and the application of ethnographic data and the Most Significant Change (MSC) technique provide avenues for further research.

Book Community Management of Rural Water Supply

Download or read book Community Management of Rural Water Supply written by Paul Hutchings and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supply of reliable and safe water is a key challenge for developing countries, particularly India. Community management has long been the declared model for rural water supply and is recognised to be critical for its implementation and success. Based on 20 detailed successful case studies from across India, this book outlines future rural water supply approaches for all lower-income countries as they start to follow India on the economic growth (and subsequent service levels) transition. The case studies cover state-level wealth varying from US$2,600 to US$10,000 GDP per person and a mix of gravity flow, single village and multi-village groundwater and surface water schemes. The research reported covers 17 states and surveys of 2,400 households. Together, they provide a spread of cases directly relevant to policy-makers in lower-income economies planning to upgrade the quality and sustainability of rural water supply to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the context of economic growth.

Book Innovative Water Resource Use and Management for Poverty Reduction in Sub Saharan Africa An Anthology

Download or read book Innovative Water Resource Use and Management for Poverty Reduction in Sub Saharan Africa An Anthology written by Chanie, Paulos and published by OSSREA. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like in many parts of the world, water resources in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have been pivotal for human survival, economic growth, social development, and practicing certain religion and cultural ethos. However, in spite of the intrinsic values of water, its use and management in sub-Saharan Africa has not been without limitations. The demand for water resources is increasing mainly due to rapid population growth, industrialization and urbanization and dealing with water-related issues has been complex and challenging for sustainable growth. Whilst there are various efforts by national governments, non-government organizations and communities to effectively and efficiently utilize and manage water resources, there are few comprehensive studies in sub- Saharan Africa that show the impact of the efforts on poverty reduction. Although certain reports indicate that many SSA countries lack clear vision on how water use can be harnessed with pro-poor growth and how poor communities can be capacitated to use water for poverty reduction, there are little exhaustive studies that clearly show familiar and innovative water use and management interventions followed by communities, national governments and other stakeholders, and demonstrate the challenges and successes of the same. Cognizant of the knowledge gap, in 2012 OSSREA launched a research project on ordinary and innovative water use and management patterns and practices in SSA, with a view to generate new knowledge on unexploited opportunities that could enhance the contribution of water resources to poverty reduction. This anthology documents various issues including water use and management in agriculture especially in irrigation projects in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe; water harvesting in Kenya and Uganda; the role of local water use institutions in Ethiopia; and water source maintenance and protection in Uganda.

Book Tanzania s Ujamaa Villages

Download or read book Tanzania s Ujamaa Villages written by Dean E. McHenry and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is concerned with a particular policy which is important to countries faced with underdevelopment. This policy was initiated in Tanzania in 1967 with the aim of inducing the rural population to "live and work together for the good of all". A decade later, virtually all scattered rural Tanzanians were living in villages and carrying on at least some activity collectively. The objectives are to slow the movement to towns, increase production, permit the introduction of new technology, increase peasant per capita income, reverse the trend towards greater inequality, provide better social services, encourage self-reliance, and reverse the trend towards centralization. One of the major difficulties in implementation was the frequent failure to analyse sufficiently the nature of peasant assessment of costs and benefits to be derived from compliance. The remunerative systems often discourage rather than encourage work.

Book Reducing Poverty through Investments in Agricultural Water Management

Download or read book Reducing Poverty through Investments in Agricultural Water Management written by Van Koppen, Barbara and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall goal of the Collaborative Program on ‘Investments in Agricultural Water Management in Sub-Saharan Africa’ is to contribute to broad-based sustainable poverty reduction and smallholder agricultural growth. The component on ‘Poverty considerations in investments in agricultural water management’ focuses in more detail on poverty and gender dimensions. It consists of two parts. The first part is thematic and elaborates poverty and gender issues emerging from the literature that complement the other components of the Collaborative Program. Part two is empirical. Acknowledging the lack of empirical data on poverty impacts of investments in agricultural water management, the Collaborative Program initiated case studies throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Eight case studies on ‘Agricultural Water Development for Poverty Reduction in Eastern and Southern Africa’, for which the field research was conducted in 2003/2004, were supported by IFAD (Peacock,2005). Further, the African Development Bank supported three case studies in West Africa in 2004, two by Kamara et al. (2004), and one by Babatunde Omilola (2005). Part two synthesizes the empirical findings of these case studies.
