Book Routing and Wavelength Assignment for WDM based Optical Networks

Download or read book Routing and Wavelength Assignment for WDM based Optical Networks written by Bijoy Chand Chatterjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an in-depth treatment of routing and wavelength assignment for optical networks, and focuses specifically on quality-of-service and fault resiliency issues. It reports on novel approaches for the development of routing and wavelength assignment schemes for fault-resilient optical networks, which improve their performance in terms of signal quality, call blocking, congestion level and reliability, without a substantial increase in network setup cost. The book first presents a solution for reducing the effect of the wavelength continuity constraint during the routing and wavelength assignment phase. Further, it reports on an approach allowing the incorporation of a traffic grooming mechanism with routing and wavelength assignment to enhance the effective channel utilization of a given capacity optical network using fewer electrical-optical-electrical conversions. As a third step, it addresses a quality of service provision scheme for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM)-based optical networks. Lastly, the book describes the inclusion of a tree-based fault resilience scheme in priority-based dispersion-reduced wavelength assignment schemes for the purpose of improving network reliability, while maintaining a better utilization of network resources. Mainly intended for graduate students and researchers, the book provides them with extensive information on both fundamental and advanced technologies for routing and wavelength assignment in optical networks. The topics covered will also be of interest to network planners and designers.

Book Study of Routing and Wavelength Assignment Problem and Performance Analysis of Genetic Algorithm for All Optical Networks

Download or read book Study of Routing and Wavelength Assignment Problem and Performance Analysis of Genetic Algorithm for All Optical Networks written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All-optical networks uses the concept of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). The problem of routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) is critically important for increasing the efficiency of wavelength routed All-optical networks. For the given set of connections, the task of setting up lightpaths by routing and assigning a wavelength to each connection is called routing and wavelength allocation problem. In work to date, the problem has been formulated as integer linear programming problem. There are two variations of the problem: static and dynamic, in the static case, the traffic is known where as in dynamic case, connection request arrive in some random fashion. Here we adopt the static view of the problem. We have studied the Genetic Algorithm to solve the RWA problem and also we studied a modified Genetic Algorithm with reference to the basic model. We studied a novel opimization problem formulations that offer the promise of radical improvements over the existing methods. We adopt a static view of the problem and saw new integer- linear programming formulations, which can be addressed with highly efficient linear programming methods and yield optimal or near-optimal RWA policies. All-optical WDM networks are chracterized by multiple metrics (hop-count, cost, delay), but generally routing protocols only optimize one metric, using some variant shortest path algorithm (e.g., the Dijkstra, all-pairs and Bellman-ford algorithms). The multicriteria RWA problem has been solved combining the relevant metrics or objective functions. The performance of RWA algorithms have been studied across the different standard networks. The performance of both the algorithms are studied with respect to the time taken for making routing decision, number of wavelengths required and cost of the requested lightpaths. It has been observed that the modified genetic algorithm performed better than the existing algorithm with respect to the time and cost parameters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research and development on optical wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks have matured considerably. While optics and electronics should be used appropriately for transmission and switching hardware, note that "intelligence'' in any network comes from "software,'' for network control, management, signaling, traffic engineering, network planning, etc.The role of software in creating powerful network architectures for optical WDM networks is emphasized. Optical WDM Networks is a textbook for graduate level courses. Its focus is on the networking aspects of optical networking, but it also includes coverage of physical layers in optical networks. The author introduces WDM and its enabling technologies and discusses WDM local, access, metro, and long-haul network architectures. Each chapter is self-contained, has problems at the end of each chapter, and the material is organized for self study as well as classroom use. The material is the most recent and timely in capturing the state-of-the-art in the fast-moving field of optical WDM networking.

Book Algorithms for Wavelength Assignment and Call Control in Optical Networks

Download or read book Algorithms for Wavelength Assignment and Call Control in Optical Networks written by Zhengbing Bian and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routing and channel assignment is a fundamental problem in computer/communication networks. In wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks, the problem is called routing and wavelength assignment or routing and path coloring (RPC) problem: given a set of connection requests, find a routing path to connect each request and assign each path a wavelength channel (often called a color) subject to certain constraints. One constraint is the distinct channel assignment: the colors (channels) of the paths in the same optical fiber must be distinct. Another common constraint is the channel continuity: a path is assigned a single color. When a path may be assigned different colors on different fibers, the RPC problem is known as the routing and call control (RCC) problem. When the routing paths are given as part of the problem input, the RPC and RCC problems are called the path coloring and call control problems, respectively. Major optimization goals for the above problems include to minimize the number of colors for realizing a given set of requests and to maximize the number of accommodated requests using a given number of colors. Those optimization problems are NP-hard for most network topologies, even for simple networks like rings and trees of depth one. In this thesis, we make the following contributions. (1) We give better approximation algorithms which use at most 3L (L is the maximum number of paths in a fiber) colors for the minimum path coloring problem in trees of rings. The 3L upper bound is tight since there are instances requiring 3L colors. We also give better approximation algorithms for the maximum RPC problem in rings. (2) We develop better algorithms for the minimum and maximum RPC problems on multi-fiber networks. (3) We develop better algorithms for the call control problem on simple topologies. (4) We develop carving-decomposition based exact algorithms for the maximum edge-disjoint paths problem in general topologies. We develop and implement tools for computing optimal branch/carving decompositions of planar graphs to provide a base for the branch/carving-decomposition based algorithms. These tools are of independent interests.

Book Fault tolerance oriented Topology Routing and Wavelength Assignment Optimization for WDM All optical Networks

Download or read book Fault tolerance oriented Topology Routing and Wavelength Assignment Optimization for WDM All optical Networks written by Dexiang Wang and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circulant graph, featuring scalable network sizes and flexible connectivity, is exploited and a node-disjoint routing algorithm for arbitrary sizes and connectivity degrees of the circulant graph is proposed to facilitate the multi-level fault-tolerant implementation of all-optical Local Area Networks (LANs). From another perspective of fault-tolerant WDM architecture design, topological optimization under certain resource provision constraints is studied, in which a number of Integer Linear Programs (ILPs) are developed to model the problem in varied granularities. Based on the drawbacks analysis of the greedy approach, a two-phase heuristic algorithm is proposed that jointly considers the routing and wavelength assignment problems. Numerical simulations show that the proposed heuristic algorithm performs much better than the traditional method for the Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) problems in which the routing and wavelength assignment are treated consecutively in a separate fashion. This dissertation also touches upon a fundamental problem: ordered path enumeration (or k-shortest path enumeration). Based on a series of graph-theoretical derivation, a new ordered path enumeration algorithm is proposed to help form a pool of possible paths for the flow requests. Then a problem-aware candidate routing scheme is developed to select candidate routes from the pool of enumerated paths. This ordered-path-enumeration-based candidate routing method is examined on two shared-path-protection RWA problems and the numerical results indicate its great performance advantage over the traditional k-shortest disjoint routing based method.
