Book Exploring the Lived Experiences of Trainees on the Extended Public Works Programme

Download or read book Exploring the Lived Experiences of Trainees on the Extended Public Works Programme written by Tshepang Mabusela and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the impact that lived experiences have on trainees of the EPWP. As one of the main employment creation strategies, the EPWP is aimed at reducing unemployment as well as contributing to ending the skills deficit in South Africa by creating temporary employment opportunities for the unemployed and mainly unskilled. Given the strong link between waged employment and poverty income in South Africa, it is important to respond to the challenge of unemployment. Understanding the type of participants who join the EPWP is crucial in order to understand if the programme has an impact on the lives of trainees. Hence the lived experiences of trainees are examined. Firstly, the study examined how the education, skills and training attained by trainees impact on the EPWP training experience. Secondly, the research investigated the conditions of EPWP employment to obtain evidence on whether the programme working and training experience increase the skills and employability of trainees. Lastly, the survival strategies employed by trainees in order to deal with and overcome their socio-economic embeddedness was researched. This study made use of semi-structured interviews conducted with thirty former trainees of the EPWP at Tshwane Leadership Foundation. The study reveals that lived experiences have a significant impact on determining how participants interact with the programme. The programme is being implemented as more of a social protection measure than a labour market performance booster. The principal reason for this was the programmes lack of work experience and training that could improve the participant's labour market performance. In this way, the program is more of a social safety net and less of a labour market performance. This nuance helped participants meet and overcome their socio-economic embeddedness.

Download or read book Targeting Poverty written by Peter G. Warr and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty reduction has been adopted as the official objective of many multilateral and bilateral development institutions. This paper argues that this focus needs to be clarified, especially the distinction between absolute and relative poverty. It argues that reduction of absolute poverty should be one of the objectives of foreign assistance, but not the sole objective. First, measures of absolute poverty are highly limited in scope. Second, the resources of foreign aid are fungible when recipient governments reallocate their own resources in response to the aid. Third, bilateral aid should reflect all the foreign policy objectives of the donor country.

Book Handbook of Quality of Life in African Societies

Download or read book Handbook of Quality of Life in African Societies written by Irma Eloff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook reflects on quality-of-life in societies on the continent of Africa. It provides a widely interdisciplinary text with insights on quality-of-life from a variety of scientific perspectives. The handbook is structured into sections covering themes of social context, culture and community; the environment and technology; health; education; and family. It is aimed at scholars who are working towards sustainable development at the intersections of multiple scientific fields and it provides measures of both objective and subjective quality-of-life. The scholarly contributions in the text are based on original research and it spans fields of research such as cultures of positivity, wellbeing, literacy and multilinguism, digital and mobile technologies, economic growth, food and nutrition, health promotion, community development, teacher education and family life. Some chapters take a broad approach and report on research findings involving thousands, and in one case millions, of participants. Other chapters zoom in and illustrate the importance of specificity in quality-of-life studies. Collectively, the handbook illuminates the particularity of quality-of-life in Africa, the unique contextual challenges and the resourcefulness with which challenges are being mediated. This handbook provides empirically grounded conceptualizations about life in Africa that also encapsulate the dynamic, ingenious ways in which we, as Africans, enhance our quality-of-life.

Book Handbook of Dialogical Self Theory

Download or read book Handbook of Dialogical Self Theory written by Hubert J. M. Hermans and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-24 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a boundary-crossing and globalizing world, the personal and social positions in self and identity become increasingly dense, heterogeneous and even conflicting. In this handbook scholars of different disciplines, nations and cultures (East and West) bring together their views and applications of dialogical self theory in such a way that deeper commonalities are brought to the surface. As a 'bridging theory', dialogical self theory reveals unexpected links between a broad variety of phenomena, such as self and identity problems in education and psychotherapy, multicultural identities, child-rearing practices, adult development, consumer behaviour, the use of the internet and the value of silence. Researchers and practitioners present different methods of investigation, both qualitative and quantitative, and also highlight applications of dialogical self theory.
