Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 36 (thesis year 1991) a total of 11,024 thesis titles from 23 Canadian and 161 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 36 reports theses submitted in 1991, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

This algorithm is organized so that data can be preprocessed to speed display computations and so that the display is generated in a form suitable for a raster scan, refresh display. The version of the program described here is a hidden-line program, but the underlying algorithm is the same for both. 11 figures, 3 tables.

This paper considers the visibility algorithms for single- valued surface (z = f(x, y)) given above the regular grid. The 3-D point test algorithm, the level comparison algorithm and the corridor algorithm are under the consideration. Their suitability for parallel implementation is investigated and their analysis and drawbacks are described. The parallelisation of 3-D point test algorithm and of corridor algorithm is proposed. The systolic array for corridor algorithm reduces the time complexity O(n2) of algorithm to O(n)."

On one hand, such an effort requires an ever-increasing committment of human and financial resources at research and industrial level, and, on the other, it meets serious difficulties in recruiting the necessary human expertise oriented to this technology which breaks with the tradi tiona I academic borders of the single disciplines. Furthermore, the scientific community is continually dealing with the problem of increasing the performance and, at the same time, complexity and costs of instruments, applying more and more sophisticated technology in an effort to meet the demand for more complete and accurate clinical information. The scientific program of this ASI and the qualification of the authors reveals the intrinsic complexity of the development process of the Imaging methodologies.

A compendium of geographical and morphological data on location, type, synonyms, summit elevation, edifice height, and status for each center, is followed by a summary of the structural and volcanological evolution of the edi- fice, historic and present activity, petrological and geochemical data, and an assessment of volcanic hazard. Each entry is superbly illustrated with a false color Landsat Thematic Mapper image, maps and ground photographs. Chapters on Holocene minor centers, and long-lived silicic caldera complexes are also well illustrated and summarise the available information on these important structures. General characteristics of these Holocene centers are then synthesised with data from older episodes of volcanism in a final chapter discussing regional volcanic evolution. In addition, the volume also contains a database summarising morphological, relative age, and volcanological data for all identifiable volcanic editifices in this volcanic province.
