This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is to study the dense region of two high-speed impinging jets in a temperature and pressure environment that is above atmospheric conditions. The program was terminated one year short due to the departure of the PI from the US. Nevertheless all of the goals that were set for this time period were accomplished. The measurements were performed using a double pulse, two reference beam holographic technique. The working fluids utilized were water, a 59% weight percent aqueous glycerol solution, and ethanol. Velocity measurements and drop-size distributions were obtained for various regions of the spray, and the universal root normal distribution was used as a representation of the cumulative volume distributions. Generally, the qualitative nature of the spray pattern remained the same as temperature increased, however, the size of the resulting droplets decreased as a result of evaporation and increased instabilities. Furthermore, the wave structure, which is characteristic of a fully developed impinging jet spray, became less distinct as temperature increase. Two mechanisms combined to reduce the drop diameters. First, as temperature increases, the viscosity of the air increases and the viscosity of the spray fluid decreases; thus, the larger spray structures atomize earlier due to the magnification of aerodynamic instabilities. Second, the heat up of the droplets, which is facilitated by the earlier primary atomization, leads to the evaporation of particle mass, and in the case of the smallest droplets, complete vaporization. Furthermore, the interaction of these two factors causes the representative diameters to increase with temperature over a small range of temperatures beyond the boiling point as the smaller droplets decrease and disappear faster than the larger droplets.

Book Understanding Injection Into High Pressure Supercritical Environments

Download or read book Understanding Injection Into High Pressure Supercritical Environments written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper summarizes the results of systematic research programs at both the DLR and the AFRL which began nearly ten years ago. The research is aimed at improving the understanding of atomization, mixing, and combustion processes associated with coaxially injected liquid propellant rocket engines. Cold flow studies are imperative for investigations without the complexities introduced with combustion. Initial studies utilized liquid nitrogen (LN2) without a co-flow stream into a chamber with ambient pressures exceeding the thermodynamic critical pressure of the injectant. Secondly, cryogenic cold flow studies were extended with consideration of the effects of a co-flowing gas. Parallel to this work, combustion studies with cryogenic propellants were introduced to understand high-pressure coaxial injection phenomena with the influence of chemical reaction. In both cases, high-pressure injection and combustion facilities were specifically designed and implemented to gain maximum information from a single coaxial injector element. Results from visualization, jet initial growth rate, fractal analysis, Raman scattering, visible length scales, and phenomenological modeling are presented and discussed. It is found that the behavior of the injected jet into supercritical ambient is quite different from those at subcritical conditions. In particular, it is found that the nature of atomization is substantially different and departs significantly from the classical cascade of events attributed to low-pressure liquid jet atomization. At elevated pressure conditions, the injected cryogenic liquid jet behaves more like a high-density gas injected into a low-density gas environment. Implications of this behavior on mixing, growth rate, evolution and response of reacting and non-reacting flow-fields, combustion zone time and length scales, and combustor behavior are investigated and discussed.

Book Determination of Structure Temperature and Concentration in the Near Injector Region of Impinging Jets Using Holographic Techniques

Download or read book Determination of Structure Temperature and Concentration in the Near Injector Region of Impinging Jets Using Holographic Techniques written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to study the fluid dynamics of the dense region of impinging jet atomizers using a novel holographic technique which is able to penetrate this region and to record reliably the non-spherical liquid elements which populate it. During the second year of the research significant progress was made in the study of both low and high speed impingement. The effect of several parameters such as the impingement angle, the liquid jet velocity, and the orifice diameter on the atomization process was investigated. It was shown that in the dense spray region the liquid elements were indeed non-spherical. Smaller and faster droplets were generated with larger impingement angles, higher jet velocities, and smaller orifice diameters. The structure of the liquid elements near the jet impact point is indicative of the mechanisms of the disintegration process. The structure of the dense spray region clearly indicated that utilization of automated techniques that assume that the droplets are spherical for measurements in this region is not appropriate. The data from the holography experiments were used to show that the Universal Root - Normal Distribution is successful in describing the dense spray region. In the coming year the work will focus on the effect of fluid properties and environment temperature on the atomization process.
