Download or read book Records of the Rough Riders Xxth Battalion Imperial Yeomanry written by H. G. McKenzie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Rough Riders (Xxth Battalion Imperial Yeomanry): Boer War, 1899-1902 This volume, which constitutes the Record of a Regiment, is merely a plain statement of facts: a story unpretentious and unembellished. For the compilation of this Record I am indebted to several oficers, non-commissioned oflicers, and men, who kindly helped with diaries and notes, while for further information I have gleaned from the hooks already written Even with all the material which I have had the opportunity of perusing and collating, it is possible that much good work has been left unchronicled, and that many notable individual deeds were accomplished, of which it has been impossible to give particulars, owing to the Regiment having been distributed over such a wide war area - due to the exigencies of active service - extending over a period of some. Book An Imperial War and the British Working Class

Download or read book An Imperial War and the British Working Class written by Richard Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2006. This study looks at a time when Victorian Britain was a time for self-doubt. There was an increasing fear that the 'place in the sun' that had so long been hers was being shadowed by the rising powers of Germany and the United States of America. Doubts arouse about her economic strength, her military prowess, even the viability of the two-party system. The South African War of 1899-1902 served for a time as the focus for all the fears that many Britons had about their country's future. The patriotism it engendered was exaggerated by the early military failures to resolve the problem of the troublesome Boers. The focus of the text is on working-class attitudes and reactions to the Boer War 1899-1902.

Book Memorializing the Anglo Boer War of 1899 1902

Download or read book Memorializing the Anglo Boer War of 1899 1902 written by Valerie B. Parkhouse and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memorializing the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 is a study of a group of memorials to soldiers who fought in a now nearly forgotten war, and deals with the many factors influencing why there was such an unprecedented number of memorials compared to those to previous conflicts like the Crimean War, fifty years earlier. One of the most important issues was the impact of changes in the organization of the British Army in the late 1800s, particularly the creation of locally-based regiments, heavily manned by volunteers drawn from local communities. The book includes a detailed commentary on the social conditions in England that also account for the unprecedented number of commemorations of this conflict. It discusses the variety of forms memorials took: informal – drinking fountains, ‘Spion Kop” stands at football stadiums; formal – stained glass windows, statues, etc., and the numerous and diverse places where they were located: cathedrals, town squares, public schools and universities. The growth of the national press and the rise of literacy is dealt with in detail, as well as the telegraph, whose invention meant that news became available overnight. Space is given to discuss the expression of Victorian prosperity in public works. The part played by the established church is well documented and an insight is given into the contribution of Imperialism, patriotism and jingoism. All these factors explain the motivation for the memorials’ creation. The book is illustrated with photographs and articles from newspapers of the day. Appendices cover those who are not commemorated, lost memorials, those who unveiled the memorials, colonial involvement and more. Memorializing the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 will appeal particularly to social historians and students of military and social history.
