Download or read book A Story from the Sand Dunes written by Hans Christian Andersen and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2021-03-22 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story comes to us from the dunes of Jylland in Denmark, but it begins in Spain, where a young couple were blissfully happy. The only thing missing to make their happiness complete was a child, but their king sent them as emissaries to the imperial court in Russia and they were forced to leave their country. On boarding the boat, little did they know that their story would go no further than the dunes of Jylland and that another would begin here... Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author, poet and artist. Celebrated for children’s literature, his most cherished fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl". His books have been translated into every living language, and today there is no child or adult that has not met Andersen's whimsical characters. His fairy tales have been adapted to stage and screen countless times, most notably by Disney with the animated films "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and "Frozen", which is loosely based on "The Snow Queen", in 2013. Thanks to Andersen's contribution to children's literature, his birth date, April 2, is celebrated as International Children's Book Day.
Download or read book San Diego Yesterday written by Richard W. Crawford and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Diego today is a vibrant and bustling coastal city, but it wasn't always so. The city's transformation from a rough-hewn border town and frontier port to a vital military center was marked by growing pains and political clashes. Civic highs and criminal lows have defined San Diego's rise through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries into a preeminent Sun Belt city. Historian Richard W. Crawford recalls the significant events and one-of-a-kind characters like benefactor Frank "Booze" Beyer, baseball hero Albert Spalding and novelist Scott O'Dell. Join Crawford for a collection that recounts how San Diego yesterday laid the foundation for the city's bright future.

Download or read book Imperial Physique written by JH. Phrydas and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2008, JH Phrydas wrote a story about how bodies talk without words. He wanted the story to not just describe the silent ritual of nonverbal communication but to perform it. The interaction would be visceral - the exchange melancholic, yet full of lust. He wanted words to retain the unsayable: the subtle movements of a body in heat. In the years since, Phrydas kept rewriting this story, using different techniques, different syntaxes and forms, in hopes that he would find a successful method of gestural writing. Imperial Physique is a collection of these attempts. They explore the way our bodies hover between animal and human, civil and wild. The bleakness - and underlying verve - of imagining Western empires in decline serve as a backdrop for a lone figure searching city streets, decaying architecture, and sand dunes for some type of physical connection. What arises is the loss of - and longing for - touch at the edges of imperialism, historical violence, and personal shame.

Download or read book A revision of the genus Arenivaga Rehn Blattodea Corydiidae with descriptions of new species and key to the males of the genus written by Heidi Hopkins and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Corydiidae (Polyphagidae, sensu lato) is a family of extremo-phile cockroaches that have received little taxonomic attention. Their cryptic subterranean way of life in some of the most in-hospitable parts of the planet makes the study of this group particularly difficult. Arenivaga (Rehn) is a genus of Corydiid cock-roach endemic to the American Southwest, Florida, and Mexico. This unusual group of insects, not examined in nearly a century, is revised in this volume. This work includes redescriptions of the genus and its nine known species, descriptions of 39 new species, a key to the adult males, and distribution maps for each species. A photographic series of the habitus and detailed drawing of the genitalia of each species are also provided, and novel morphological characters are described. In addition, the locality data of more than 5000 specimens used in this study is now available to researchers. Even though this research increases the number of species in Arenivaga five-fold, there is little doubt that there are many more species to be found in Mexico, which is poorly surveyed in comparison to the US terrain.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The subtitle says it all about the harsh, raw beauty of a little-known but intriguing corner of the vast California desert. Its beckoning red and purple landscapes are bounded on the east by "Old Red," the Colorado River, and on the west by the Algodones sand dunes, one of the largest sand dune complexes in North America. A drive of less than three easy hours on I-8 from San Diego brings the explorer to the ancient portals of the southeastern Chocolate Mountains and the Cargo Muchacho Mountains, guarded by the Quechan People for thousands of years and now accessible via graded dirt roads, 4WD trails, and just enough asphalt to appeal to less adventurous souls."--Provided by publisher.
