Book The Spanish Lexicon of Baseball

Download or read book The Spanish Lexicon of Baseball written by John M. Chaston and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-11-28 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Lexicon of Baseball: Semantics, Style, and Terminology draws on nearly 6,000 published MLB game summaries to explore the contours of baseball terminology in Spanish. Organized in a logical sequence that corresponds to various aspects of baseball (field of play, player positions, getting on base, types and modes of hits, scoring, runs-batted-in, umpire involvement and calls, pitching, and defense), the work combines narrative style and illustrative examples with keen lexical analysis. The result is an entertaining and informative volume that is neither folksy nor linguistically overcomplicated.

Book Binominal Quantifiers in Spanish

Download or read book Binominal Quantifiers in Spanish written by Katrien Dora Verveckken and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantification is central to human experience (cf. Aristotle’s Organon): the most basic aspects of human life and reasoning involve quantity assessment. This study sheds lights on a highly frequent way to express quantification in Spanish, viz. the binominal quantifier (e.g. un aluviónN1 de llamadasN2 ‘a flood of calls’) which assesses the quantity of N2 in terms of N1. This volume offers a corpus-based, cognitive-functional analysis of binominal quantifiers (BQ) in Spanish. The first part is dedicated to the development of BQs and starts from the assumption that BQs are cross-linguistically involved in grammaticalization. This monograph frames the history of BQs in Spanish in terms of constructional levels of change and highlights the complex interplay between analogical thinking and conceptual persistence. The second part motivates both the ample variation in the paradigm of quantifying nouns and their combinatorial pattern by the very same mechanism of conceptually-driven analogy. The study thus yields an innovative functional model of BQs in Spanish, in synchrony and in diachrony, with major implications for reference grammars and theory building.

Book Systemic Functional Grammar

Download or read book Systemic Functional Grammar written by J.R. Martin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a usage-based theory of language, founded on the assumption that language is shaped entirely by its various functions in the contexts in which it used. The first of its kind, this book advances SFL by applying it comparatively to English, Spanish and Chinese. By analysing English alongside two other, typologically very different major world languages, it shows how SFL can effectively address two central issues in linguistics – namely typology and universals. It concentrates in particular on argumentation, carefully explaining how descriptions of nominal group, verbal group and clause systems and structures are motivated, and draws on examples from key texts which display a full range of ideational, interpersonal and textual grammar resources. By working across three world languages from a text-based perspective, and demonstrating how grammar descriptions can be developed and improved, the book establishes the foundations for a groundbreaking functional approach to language typology.

The contributions of this volume aim to pay attention to these multiple material dimensions of Latin American 20th and 21st century literatures. From perspectives informed by materialism, sociology, book studies, and digital humanities, the articles of this volume analyze the role of publishing houses, politics of translation, mediators and gatekeepers, allowing insights into the processes that enable books to cross borders and to be transformed into globally circulating commodities. The book focusses both on material (re)sources of literary archives, key actors in literary and cultural markets, prizes and book fairs, as well as on recent dimension of the digital age. Statements of some of the leading representatives of the global publishing world complement these analyses of the operations of selection and aggregation of value to literary texts.

Book Contraband Corridor

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rebecca Berke Galemba
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2017-12-26
  • ISBN : 1503603997
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book Contraband Corridor written by Rebecca Berke Galemba and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mexico–Guatemala border has emerged as a geopolitical hotspot of illicit flows of both goods and people. Contraband Corridor seeks to understand the border from the perspective of its long-term inhabitants, including petty smugglers of corn, clothing, and coffee. Challenging assumptions regarding security, trade, and illegality, Rebecca Berke Galemba details how these residents engage in and justify extralegal practices in the context of heightened border security, restricted economic opportunities, and exclusionary trade policies. Rather than assuming that extralegal activities necessarily threaten the state and formal economy, Galemba's ethnography illustrates the complex ways that the formal, informal, legal, and illegal economies intertwine. Smuggling basic commodities across the border provides a means for borderland peasants to make a living while neoliberal economic policies decimate agricultural livelihoods. Yet smuggling also exacerbates prevailing inequalities, obstructs the possibility of more substantive political and economic change, and provides low-risk economic benefits to businesses, state agents, and other illicit actors, often at the expense of border residents. Galemba argues that securitized neoliberalism values certain economic activities and actors while excluding and criminalizing others, even when the informal and illicit economy is increasingly one of the poor's only remaining options. Contraband Corridor contends that security, neoliberalism, and illegality are interdependent in complex ways, yet how they unfold depends on negotiations between diverse border actors.

Book Exiting the Factory Volume 2

Download or read book Exiting the Factory Volume 2 written by Alexander Gallas and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important book, Gallas asks what strikes in non-industrial sectors mean for class formation, a critical question which has been largely unaddressed by the current literature on global labour unrest. A mapping of strikes around the world and case studies from Germany, Britain and Spain cast new light on class relations, struggles around waged and unwaged work and labour movements in contemporary capitalism to bring class theory back to labour studies. This is a valuable resource for academics and students of employment relations, sociology and politics. This second volume focuses on empirical strike research.
