Book Preventing Drunk Driving

Download or read book Preventing Drunk Driving written by Elsie R. Shore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1998 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preventing Drunk Driving shows what is being done today, in research and practice, to reduce impaired driving and the fatalities and injuries it produces and to curtail the spread of this tragic social epidemic. In this informative book, you¿ll discover how current research and prevention programs are increasing the success of designated driver programs. You¿ll also find out how communities, friends, and experts are making drinkers aware of their levels of intoxication and discouraging them from driving to keep the roads safer. You¿ll see when intervention works, when it doesn¿t, and how you can be most effective as a citizen in the fight against impaired driving deaths along your own stretch of the world¿s highways and city streets. In Preventing Drunk Driving, you¿ll get up-to-date data on how researchers are identifying the most dangerous drunk driving recidivists. Also, you¿ll see how increased study and research have led to theoretical models of intervention, assessments of the usefulness of vehicle interlock programs, and the use of mapping to target offenders most at risk. Most importantly, you¿ll learn: the results of experiments designed to test methods of increasing designated driving how census-tract mapping can target communities prone to DWI offenses the benefits and limitations of vehicle-interlock devices for the prevention of recidivism how interveners may improve their chances of stopping an impaired person from getting behind the wheel ways that blood alcohol concentration (BAC) feedback stations can reduce DUI incidents "Give me the keys." "Friends don¿t let friends drive drunk." These are all sayings we¿ve heard--but what are the scientific facts about impaired driving and its prevention in our local communities and neighborhoods? Preventing Drunk Driving analyzes the societal ill of driving under the influence of alcohol and its related death toll from a wide variety of angles.

Book excerpt: On May 14, 2013, the 25th anniversary of our nation's deadliest drunk-driving crash, which killed 24 children and three adults in Carrollton, KY, the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB's) five-member board voted unanimously to issue bold recommendations to help the U.S. reach zero and eliminate alcohol-impaired driving. Bold steps are needed: On average, every hour, one person dies in a crash involving a drunk driver and 20 more people are injured, including three with debilitating injuries. That adds up quickly to yearly totals of nearly 10,000 deaths, 27,000 lives forever altered and another 146,000 injured. This safety report and recommendations culminate a year-long effort by the NTSB to thoroughly examine this problem and develop a set of targeted interventions. Figures. This is a print on demand report.

Book Getting to Zero Alcohol Impaired Driving Fatalities

Download or read book Getting to Zero Alcohol Impaired Driving Fatalities written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol-impaired driving is an important health and social issue as it remains a major risk to Americans' health today, surpassing deaths per year of certain cancers, HIV/AIDS, and drownings, among others, and contributing to long-term disabilities from head and spinal injuries. Progress has been made over the past decades towards reducing these trends, but that progress has been incremental and has stagnated more recently. Getting to Zero Alcohol-Impaired Driving Fatalities examines which interventions (programs, systems, and policies) are most promising to prevent injuries and death from alcohol-impaired driving, the barriers to action and approaches to overcome them, and which interventions need to be changed or adopted. This report makes broad-reaching recommendations that will serve as a blueprint for the nation to accelerate the progress in reducing alcohol-impaired driving fatalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks â€" and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

This book was released on 2004-11-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a 12-session, 24-hour education program for impaired driving offenders who have at least minimal indicators of past problems associated with AOD use or misuse and whose arrest BAC was at the impaired driving level. Level II Education helps clients to understand how problem behaviors are learned and how those behaviors are strengthened. They develop a good understanding of their involvement in impaired driving and how their state laws apply to that involvement. Clients learn how their own AOD use fits clinically identified patterns and cycles of AOD use and misuse. They develop strategies and skills to prevent future problems of use and misuse and involvement in DWI behavior: relapse and recidivism prevention.

Book Teaching Skills to Reduce DUI Recidivism

Download or read book Teaching Skills to Reduce DUI Recidivism written by Karen Chan Osilla and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to assist counselors in implementing RE-thinking Avenues for Change (REACH), a cognitive behavioral therapy developed for clients with a first-time driving under the influence (DUI) offense who are enrolled in a DUI program. The goal of REACH is to prevent drinking and driving. The authors conducted a randomized clinical trial evaluating how helpful REACH was compared with existing DUI groups in program for individuals with a first-time DUI offense, and they found that clients who received REACH reported lower odds of impaired driving upon program completion than did clients in existing groups. This manual presents the 12-session REACH protocol used in the research study. Each session is interactive and encourages clients to share ideas and information; examine the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that put them at risk for future drinking and driving; learn or enhance existing coping skills; and provide fellow group members with peer support.
