In regions and vegetation types where considerable differences in fuel consumption exist among burning seasons, the effects of prescribed fire season appears to be driven more by fire-intensity differences among seasons than by phenology or growth stage of organisms at the time of fire. Where fuel consumption differs little among burning seasons, the effect of phenology or growth stage of organisms is often more apparent, because it is not overwhelmed by fire-intensity differences. Species in ecosystems that evolved with fire appear to be resilient to one or few out-of-season prescribed burns. Illus.

Therefore, forest land managers can greatly benefit from a more thorough understanding of the ecological impacts of fire and fuel management activities on the vital services soils provide. We present a summary of new research on fire effects and soils made possible through the Joint Fire Science Program and highlight management implications where applicable. Some responses were consistent across sites, whereas others were unique and may not easily be extrapolated to other sites. Selected findings include (1) postfire soil water repellency is most likely to occur in areas of high burn severity and is closely related to surface vegetation; (2) although wildfire has the potential to decrease the amount of carbon stored in soils, major changes in land use, such as conversion from forest to grasslands, present a much greater threat to carbon storage; (3) prescribed fires, which tend to burn less severely than wildfires and oftentimes have minor effects on soils, may nonetheless decrease species richness of certain types of fungi; and (4) early season prescribed burns tend to have less impact than late season burns on soil organisms, soil carbon, and other soil properties.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The impact of low-intensity prescribed fires on slash pine/saw-palmetto/gallberry understory and forest floor nutrients was estimated from measurements before and after burning. Highly significant correlations existed between weight loss of these fuel components and the weight loss of several elements. Energy loss was also highly correlated with forest floor and understory weight loss. The data also indicate that annual or biennal burns do not reduce themacronutrients in the soil surface layer, but, in fact, increase them; and that even though a significant amount of N (110kg/ha) may be lost by burning a 5-year fuel accumulation there still is 160 kg/ha of N in the ash and residue following the fire, as well as about 700 kg/ha in the upper 10 cm of the soil profile.

This knowl edge provides a basis for developing guides to the effective use of prescribed fire and for determining the situations where wildfires can be minimized or prevented by using prescribed fires. The catastrophic effects of uncontrolled fires on the soil have been observed fre quently following wildfires. There is a need for evaluating those burning situations where fire effects are less. Dramatic than during wildfires so the tradeoffs between prescribed burning and/or other means of vegetation manipulation can be compared. For example, burning volatilizes nitrogen, an essential element for plant growth; how ever, the loss of some nitrogen by burning might become a more acceptable alternative than large soil losses occurring after the use of heavy mechanical equipment. Likewise, several light or moderately controlled burns possibly have less impact on the soil than a single severe wildfire that may result from a large fuel accumulation.
