Book Impacts of Late Gestational Tall Fescue Forage Systems on Preweaning Calves

Download or read book Impacts of Late Gestational Tall Fescue Forage Systems on Preweaning Calves written by Katlyn Nicole Niederecker and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2-yr experiment was conducted researching the impact of common lower Midwestern beef cattle winter forage systems on late gestation, spring-calving beef cows and their subsequent calves. We hypothesized that cows grazing stockpiled tall fescue (STF) during late gestation would have increased nutrient intake compared to cows fed summer-baled tall fescue hay (HAY), which would result in improved fetal growth and development, as well as subsequent calf performance and metabolic status. Overall, cows consuming HAY lost more BCS prepartum than cows consuming STF. In yr 2 HAY cows gained more BW prepartum than STF cows, but there was no difference between forage systems in yr 1. Calves born to cows consuming HAY weighed less at birth than calves born to STF cows, suggesting decreased fetal growth. Despite this, in yr 2 there were no differences in calf vigor measures at birth or in triiodothyronine, thyroxine, or cortisol concentrations at 48 h. Additionally, calves born to HAY cows tended to weigh less at d 80 than STF in yr 1, but in yr 2 there was no difference. During yr 1 blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was greater at 48 h for calves born to cows consuming STF and plasma glucose concentrations tended to be greater through weaning for STF calves. Despite this, impacts of late gestation maternal nutrition on calf amino acid concentrations at 48 h varied. In conclusion, grazing stockpiled tall fescue in late gestation appears to improve fetal growth and alter perinatal nutrient supply in calves.

Book Fescue Toxicosis and Management

Download or read book Fescue Toxicosis and Management written by Craig A. Roberts and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fescue toxicosis continues to be one of the most devastating problems in forage–livestock agriculture. Because there is presently no cure, using the most up-to-date management and prevention approaches are crucial. The 2nd edition of this important guide presents an easy-to-understand description of this complex problem, along with recommendations that are practical for real farm use.

Book Maternal Environment and Fescue Cultivar Effects on Growth Development and Fertility of Beef Heifers

Download or read book Maternal Environment and Fescue Cultivar Effects on Growth Development and Fertility of Beef Heifers written by Jennifer Denyse Patterson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighty Brahman-influenced cows (5.6 BCS) were assigned to graze common bermudagrass (CB) or toxic tall fescue (E+) during a 60-d breeding season. Body condition (BC) was assessed at d 0, 30, and 60 of breeding season. Cows were managed to achieve marginal (4.2 BCS) or good (6.3 BCS) BC during last trimester. Heifer birth and weaning (WW; 7 to 8 mo) weights were recorded. The Angus sired heifers were weighed and randomly assigned to E+ or non-toxic (Novel) tall fescue at 9 to 10 mo of age for 190d. Heifer weight, growth data, and antral follicle count (AFC) were collected at yearling (11 to 12 mo) and prebreeding (13 to 14 mo). Pasture was experimental unit and heifer age as covariate. Main effects were cow conception forage (ConFor), conception BC (ConBC), last trimester BC (LateBC), and heifer fescue grazed during development (Hfes). Cows grazing E+ ConFor had heifers that weighed less at birth than heifers from cows grazing CB (33.3 vs. 35.2 kg). Cow ConFor x LateBC interaction affected heifer weight and pelvic area. Heifers developed on E+ from marginal-ConBC, E+ ConFor, and marginal-LateBC cows had the lowest ADG. Novel heifer AFC from good-ConBC, CB ConFor, and marginal-LateBC cows was greater than E+ AFC from marginal-ConBC, CB ConFor, and good-LateBC cows (25.1 vs. 3.8 follicles). Cow LateBC x Hfes affected heifer pregnancy rate (90.3, 69.6, 50.0, and 43.8 percent, Novel heifers from good-LateBC cows, Novel heifers from marginal-LateBC cows, E+ heifers from good-LateBC cows, and E+ heifers from marginal-LateBC cows, respectively). Ensuring adequate conception and late-gestation BC and developing heifers on Novel fescue will increase pelvic growth, number of antral follicles, and pregnancy rates of heifer offspring. Industry applicable tools such as monitoring cow BCS, using skeletal growth indicators, and grazing Novel fescue could be beneficial in selecting replacement heifers.

Book Impact of Grazing Stockpiled Tall Fescue of Lactating Beef Cows

Download or read book Impact of Grazing Stockpiled Tall Fescue of Lactating Beef Cows written by LeAnn Elizabeth Curtis and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experiments are described, in which fall-calving cow-calf pairs grazed stockpiled tall fescue at three different endophyte infection levels (20, 51, and 89%) and four forage allowances (2.25, 3.00, 3.75, and 4.50% of BW). A hay feeding treatment was included as a standard for comparison. Each experiment was a randomized complete block design. Average daily gain, BW, BCS decreased as forage allowance decreased and endophyte infection increased. However by weaning, cow BW averaged 528 kg across all treatments. Calf gain was unaffected by endophyte infection level of stockpiled tall fescue, with an ADG of 0.72 kg d−1. Individual calf performance was greatest at forage allowances above 2.25% of BW. However, gain ha−1 was greatest for the 2.25% of BW forage allowance, averaging 155 kg ha−1. A forage allowance of 2.25% of BW is likely the most efficient, since cow weight loss over winter is easily regained, land requirements are low, and calf gain ha−1 is maximized. Additionally, if used for winter stockpiling, renovation of endophyte-infected tall fescue pastures for fall-calving operations is unneeded in most cases.

Book Lactation and the Mammary Gland

Download or read book Lactation and the Mammary Gland written by R. Michael Akers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-02-10 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Akers provides the basics for understanding mammary development and lactation and conveys the critical regulatory events in lactation. This text willl prove to be an invaluable overview of mamorary development and lactation for undergraduates and graduates studying lactation, new researchers, and as a review for established scientists. Additionally, the book will be an important resource for professionals in the animal and dairy industry and for those in other scientific disciplines such as food chemistry, cell biology, and endocrinology whose work is closely tied to mammary gland development and function. Lactation and the Mammary Gland covers growth and development of the mammary gland including comparisons between species. It imparts and emphasizes the critical nature of mammary growth and the onset of lactation at the time of parturition. Special emphasis is given to the endocrine and growth factor regulation of both mammogenesis and lactogenesis. A thorough discussion of the role of growth hormone in development and maintenance of lactation or galactopoiesis adds to this book's value as a text and reference. The author reviews the presence of hormones, growth factors, and other bioactive compounds in milk and mammary secretions as well as the potential for use of the mammary gland as a bioreactor in the pharmaceutical industry. A description of the nutritional and management factors in milk production round out the book's comprehensive coverage.
