Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiesel continues to enjoy increasing popularity. However, recent studies on carbonyl compounds emissions from biodiesel fuel are inconclusive. Emissions of carbonyl compounds from petroleum diesel fuels were compared to emissions from pure biodiesel fuels and petroleum-biodiesel blends used in a non-road diesel generator. The concentration of total carbonyl compounds was the highest when the engine was idling. The carbonyl emissions, as well as ozone formation potential, from biodiesel fuel blends were higher than those emitted from petroleum diesel fuel. The sulfur content of diesel fuel and the source of biodiesel fuel were not found to have a significant impact on emissions of carbonyl compounds. Mechanism parameters of the thermal decomposition of biodiesel-range methyl esters were obtained from the results of thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The overall reaction orders are between 0.49 and 0.71 and the energies of activation are between 59.9 and 101.3 kJ/mole. Methyl esters in air have lower activation energies than those in nitrogen. Methyl linoleate has the lowest activation energy, followed by methyl oleate, and methyl stearate. The pyrolysis and oxidation of the three methyl esters were investigated using a semi-isothermal tubular flow reactor. The profiles of major products versus reaction temperature are presented. In the pyrolysis of methyl stearate, the primary reaction pathway is the decarboxylic reaction at the methyl ester functional group. Methyl oleate's products indicate more reactions on its carbon-carbon double bond. Methyl linoleate shows highest reactivity among the three methyl esters, and 87 products were detected. The oxidation of three methyl esters resulted in more products in all compound classes, and 55, 114, and 127 products were detected, respectively. The oxidation of methyl esters includes decarboxylation on ester group. The methyl ester's carbon chain could be oxidized as a hydrocarbon compound and form oxidized esters and unsaturated esters, which have been observed in methyl ester's oxidation products. The oxidation of methyl stearate, methyl oleate and methyl linoleate produces 16, 28 and 34 types of carbonyl compounds, respectively. The unsaturated methyl ester forms more carbonyl compounds compared to the saturated methyl ester, which indicates the formation of carbonyl compounds might be more related to the unsaturated carbon bond rather than the methyl ester group. Good agreement between results for total carbon (TC) generally has been found, but the organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC) fractions determined by different methods often disagree. Lack of reference materials has impeded progress on method standardization and understanding method biases. As part of this dissertation, uniform carbon distribution for the filter sets is prepared by using a simply aerosol generation and collection method. The relative standard deviations for the mean TC, OC, and EC results reported by the seven laboratories were below 10%, 11% and 12% (respectively). The method of filter generation is generally applicable and reproducible. Depending on the application, different filter loadings and types of OC materials can be employed. Matched filter sets prepared by this approach can be used for determining the accuracy of various OC-EC methods and thereby contribute to method standardization.

Book excerpt: Diesel particulate matter (PM) is classified by the EPA as carcinogenic, with the transportation sector largely responsible these emissions within the United States. Biodiesel (B100) is derived from renewable sources, providing similar chemical composition to diesel fuel and is in the current diesel supply up to 5% across the nation. However, biodiesel has an inherent oxidation issue due to the unique mixture of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) molecules present in the biodiesel that are not in diesel. Biodiesel oxidation can only be delayed, and the inevitable process results in changes to the original fuel composition that may alter emissions profiles. There have been limited studies on the effect of oxidized biodiesel fuel on PM emissions, and with increasing biodiesel production volumes, it is important to assess due to possible adverse human health effects. In this study, it was hypothesized that the change in fuel composition due to oxidation would lead to lower PM emissions because the presence of more fuel oxygen molecules and secondary oxidation products would enhance self-combustion characteristics. In this study, PM mass generated from a light-duty diesel engine running on three different fuel types--pure ("neat") B100 biodiesel, pure B0 diesel, and B20 (20% v/v biodiesel blend with diesel)--was quantified and compared to the PM mass (and concentrations) from repeated emissions testing using artificially oxidized B100 and B20 biodiesel as the fuel source. B100 fuel was heated at 110oC for 5, 10, and 20 hours ("oxidation states" 3, 2, and 1, respectively), verifying the extent of fuel oxidation by building an apparatus (Biodiesel Oxidation Stability Surveyor, BOSS) that quantified the biodiesel fuel's oxidative stability using a method equivalent to standard methods for determining the biofuel's induction period. Induction period increased linearly with time spent under the artificial oxidation conditions. A custom, load-based steady-state modal drive cycle was specially developed for emissions testing each neat and oxidized B100 and B20 fuel type in a light-duty diesel engine dynamometer. Observed changes in PM mass with increased fuel oxidation time occurred only for B20 fuel with a 51 ±13% decrease. Fuel properties such as cetane number, biodiesel content, density, and total aromatics were compared between neat and oxidized B20 and B100 samples. Cetane number increased 7% from 66.8 to 71.7 from B100 neat to B100 OX1 (20hrs) and density increased from 0.709g/cm3 to 0.723g/cm3. Chemical analysis of the biodiesel fuels by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) quantified individual FAME compounds to determine key species involved in fuel oxidation. B100 FAME concentration widely varied, however, the B20 fuel blend showed that 20 hour artificial oxidation treatment decreased concentrations of the unsaturated FAMEs for C18:3n3, C18:2 cis-9,12, C18:1 (both cis- and trans- isomers) by 41.7 ±3.5%, 33.25 ±8.8%, and 21.9 ±6.9% relative to their initial concentration in the unoxidized fuel, respectively, in general agreement with literature values. The findings of this study help contribute a better understanding of oxidation effects on biodiesel fuel and link together fuel properties, chemical composition, and particulate emissions whereas most literature excludes detailed analysis of biodiesel fuel composition and associated emissions effects.

Best-case scenarios that give maximum gasification rates were determined for DPM impregnated with KOH and non-catalyzed DPM using temperature programmed oxidation and isothermal experiments. Conditions of intimate catalyst-carbon contact (K/C molar ratio=1/50) and high NO2 concentrations (1%) to improve the reactivity of the carbon reactive sites were unable to meet the steady state gasification rate needed for particulate filter regeneration for a modern diesel engine at 200°C. Oxygen-free thermal annealing (>500°C) caused reactivity losses of a maximum of 40% that correspond to changes to surface morphology and/or concentration of oxygen-containing functional groups.TP-ToFSIMS identified surface functional group changes with temperature on non-dosed and NOX pre-dosed (1.5%NO, 1%NO2, 4.5%O 2, balance helium) diesel soot and sucrose char. Detailed analysis of the NOX dosed sucrose char spectra using both inspection and principal component analysis techniques revealed that the 1200 ion fragments created could be reduced to five sets of ions that are chemically and kinetically distinct. These sets presumably represent surface functional groups on the carbon. For example, Set IV may represent carboxylic acid, lactone, or carboxylic anhydride functional groups. Based on these results a mechanism for the surface reaction of NO2 with carbon under vacuum conditions was postulated. At temperatures less than 200°C the ion fragments contain primarily carbon-NO 2 type ions. As temperature increases between 200 and 400°C the ion fragments are primarily carbon-NO and carbon-N type fragments. At higher temperatures (>500°C) the surface is enriched with nitrogen containing functional groups. A surface reaction mechanism is proposed where NO 2 is bonded to an armchair site and with increasing temperatures and molecular rearrangements the N is incorporated into the carbon ring. The initial surface composition of NOx containing functional groups changes within the area of relevance of low temperature soot regeneration (i.e. between 25° and 200°C). Further studies are needed to understand the effect of N-incorporation on carbon reactivity. No rate processes either in reactor studies or based on surface functional groups met the rate criteria for low temperature DPM oxidation.
