Book excerpt: The objectives of this report are to review the scientific literature on biophysical effects of uranium mining and to identify knowledge gaps in the context of requirements for cumulative impact assessment & environmental monitoring. The scope of the review includes peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, theses, books, and published government research reports. The contaminants of concern are radionuclides in the uranium & thorium decay series, nickel, and arsenic. Receptors of concern include both aquatic & terrestrial biota, but human health concerns are not included. Emphasis is placed on information from Canadian uranium mine/mill sites. Sections of the review cover the following: background on cumulative effects assessment & environmental monitoring; documented biophysical effects of Canadian uranium mines; radiation effects in non-human biota; and effects of uranium, arsenic, and nickel on non- human biota. The final section discusses general data gaps and makes recommendations fur further research.
