Book excerpt: Aquí and Allá: Transnational Dominican Theater and Performance explores how contemporary Dominican theater and performance artists portray a sense of collective belonging shaped by the transnational connections between the homeland and the diaspora. Through close readings of plays and performances produced in the Dominican Republic and the United States in dialogue with theories of theater and performance, migration theory, and literary, cultural, and historical studies, this book situates theater and performance in debates on Dominican history and culture and the impact of migration on the changing character of national identity from end of the twentieth century to the present. By addressing local audiences of island-based and diasporic Dominicans with stories of characters who are shaped by both places, the theatrical performances analyzed in this book operate as a democratizing force on conceptions of Dominican identity and challenge assumptions about citizenship and national belonging. Likewise, the artists’ bi-national perspectives and work methods challenge the paradigms that have traditionally framed Latin(o) American theater studies.

NLERAP's goal is to bring together various constituencies within the broad Latino community who are concerned with public education to articulate a Latino perspective on research-based school reform, and to use research as a guide to improving the public school systems that serve Latino students and to maximizing their opportunities to participate fully and equally in all social, economic, and political contexts of society. Latino Education: An Agenda for Community Action Research conceptualizes and illustrates the theoretical framework for the NLERAP agenda and its projects. This framework is grounded in three overlapping areas of scholarship and activism, which are reflected within the chapters in this volume: critical studies, illuminating and analyzing the status of people of color in the United States; Latino/a educational research, capturing the sociohistorical, cultural, and political schooling experiences of U.S. Latino/a communities; and participatory action research, exemplifying a liberation-oriented methodology for truly transformative education. The volume includes both descriptive educational research and critical analyses of previous research and educational agendas related to Latino/a communities in the United States. According to current U.S. Census data, Latinos now comprise the largest minority group in the total U.S. population. Historically, reflecting larger sociohistorical and economic inequalities in U.S. society, the Latino community has not been well served by U.S. public school systems. More attention to the Latino students' educational issues is needed to redress this problem, especially given the tremendous population increase and projected growth of Latino communities in the U.S. Latino Education: An Agenda for Community Action Research is a major contribution toward this goal.

But the legacies of Mexican Americans and other Latino men and women who often worked for Pasadena's rich and famous have been sparsely preserved through the generations--even though these citizens often made remarkable community contributions and lived in close proximity to their employers. A fuller story of the Pasadena area can be provided from these vintage images and the accompanying information culled from anecdotes, master's theses, newspaper articles, formal and informal oral histories, and the Ethnic History Research Project compiled for the City of Pasadena in 1995. Among the stories told is that of Antonio F. Coronel, a one-time Mexican Army officer who served as California state treasurer from 1866 to 1870 and whose image graced the 1904 Tournament of Roses program.

Desde o início dos anos 2000, 46 milhões de pessoas nos países estudados recebem cobertura de programas de saúde com direitos explícitos a atendimento. Essas reformas foram acompanhadas por um aumento do gasto público com saúde, financiado em grande medida pelas receitas gerais que priorizam ou visam explicitamente a população que não tem capacidade de pagamento. O compromisso político em geral se traduziu em orçamentos maiores e na aprovação de legislação que insula recursos para a saúde. Muitos países priorizaram o atendimento de saúde primária com boa relação de custo-benefício e adotaram métodos de pagamento que incentivam a eficiência e a prestação de contas por resultados, proporcionando à s autoridades do setor de saúde mais poder para induzir os prestadores a cumprirem as prioridades de saúde pública. Apesar do progresso, ainda persistem disparidades no financiamento e na prestação de serviços de qualidade entre os subsistemas de saúde. Cumprir o compromisso da cobertura universal de saúde exigirá esforços concertados para melhorar a geração de receitas de formal fiscalmente sustentável e aumentar a produtividade em termos de despesas. Em Rumo a uma Cobertura Universal de Saúde e Equidade na América Latina e Caribe: Evidência de Países Selecionados, os autores mostram que a evidência da análise de 54 pesquisas domiciliares corrobora que os investimentos para ampliar a cobertura de saúde estão gerando resultados. Embora os pobres ainda apresentem resultados de saúde piores que os riscos, as disparidades diminuíram consideravelmente — em particular nos estágios iniciais da vida. Os países alcançaram altos níveis de cobertura e equidade na utilização de serviços de saúde materna e infantil. O quadro tem mais nuanças e não é tão positivo quando se trata da situação de saúde dos adultos e da prevalência de doenças e condições crônicas de saúde. A cobertura para doenças não transmissíveis não é alta e continua a pender mais para os mais abastados. A prevalência de doenças não transmissíveis não ocorreu como esperado, tendo em vista a queda na mortalidade; o melhor acesso a serviços de diagnósticos entre as pessoas mais riscas pode estar mascarando mudanças na prevalência efetiva. Gastos catastróficos com saúde caíram na maior parte dos países. No entanto, o quadro com respeito à equidade é mais misto e indica limitações na medição. Embora a taxa de empobrecimento em razão de gastos com saúde seja baixa ou em declínio, 2 a 4 milhões de pessoas nos países estudados ainda ficam abaixo da linha da pobreza em razões de gastos com saúde. Esforços de monitoramento sistemático da qualidade do atendimento de saúde na região são ainda incipientes. No entanto, a análise da literatura revela deficiências importantes na qualidade da saúde, bem como diferenças substanciais entre os subsistemas. Melhorar a qualidade do atendimento e garantir a sustentabilidade dos investimentos em saúde continuam a ser itens pendentes da agenda.

This volume offers an intriguing set of maps to guide this exploration over the near future. It is intended for those who are already reasonably well read in the research literature that has accumulated since the publication of McCombs and Shaw's original 1972 Public Opinion Quarterly article. This piece of literature documented the influence of the news media agenda on the public agenda in a wide variety of geographic and social settings, elaborated the characteristics of audiences and media that enhance or diminish those agenda-setting effects, and cataloged those exogenous factors explaining who sets the media's agenda. In the current volume, a provocative set of maps for explicating new levels of agenda-setting theory have been sketched by a new generation of young scholars, launching an enterprise that has significant implications for theoretical research and for the day-to-day role of mass communication in democratic societies. At the first level of agenda setting are agendas of objects--the traditional domain of agenda setting research--represented by an accumulation of hundreds of studies over the past quarter century. At the second level of agenda setting are agendas of attributes--one of the new theoretical frontiers whose aspects are discussed in detail in the opening chapters. Other chapters offer maps of yet other theoretical frontiers, including political advertising agendas and their impact on behavior, the framing of various agendas in the mass media and the differential impact of print and TV, the theoretical role of individual differences in the agenda-setting influence of the news media on the public agenda, methodological advances for determining cause and effect roles in agenda-setting, and the application of agenda-setting theory to historical analysis. This volume is an invitation to others to become active members of the invisible college of agenda-setting scholarship. As such, the goals of this book are threefold: * to introduce a broad set of ideas about agenda-setting; * to enrich the exploration of these ideas by enhancing scholarly dialogue among the members of this invisible college; and * to enhance the discussion of agenda-setting research in seminars and research groups around the world. Agenda-setting has remained a vital and productive area of communication research over a quarter century because it has continued to introduce new research questions into the marketplace of ideas and to integrate this work with other theoretical concepts and perspectives about journalism and mass communication. Understanding the dynamics of agenda- setting is central to understanding the dynamics of contemporary democracy.
