Book excerpt: Brasil, el país más grande de Sudamérica y el motor de esta región, acoge en 2014, el torneo de fútbol más prestigioso, la Copa del Mundo de la FIFA. El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar el impacto, tanto a nivel económico como social, que la celebración de un evento de estas características tiene sobre Brasil, uno de los mercados emergentes más atractivos del mundo. Para la consecución de este objetivo analizamos, en primer lugar, el macroentorno de Brasil (económico y cultural). Presentamos, asimismo, una breve reseña de las repercusiones más destacadas de las distintas ediciones de la Copa a lo largo de la historia. A continuación estudiamos los antecedentes de este evento deportivo a través del ejemplo de Sudáfrica 2010 y realizamos una retrospectiva de Brasil y el fútbol. Tomando como punto de partida esta investigación exploratoria llevamos a cabo una investigación empírica sobre las consecuencias del Mundial en el país brasileño. Para ello, realizamos una serie de entrevistas en profundidad a brasileños residentes en España. Finalmente, presentamos todos los aspectos sobre los cuales la Copa ha tenido un impacto, tanto dentro del ámbito económico (infraestructuras o movilidad urbana entre otros) como social (capital humano o violencia entre otros).

Dos de los mega-eventos internacionales más importantes por el número de seguidores que movilizan, por su repercusión mediática, etc. son sin duda la celebración del Mundial de Fútbol de la FIFA y los Juegos Olímpicos. Si sólo hablamos ya de eventos deportivos internacionales, sin duda son los dos más importantes. En los últimos años los gobiernos de los países y ciudades celebran como una auténtica victoria el conseguir ser elegidos próximas sedes de estos eventos, mientras que los que no lo consiguen reciben una fuerte desilusión. La razón por la que esta tesina se centra en estos dos mega-eventos internacionales es principalmente porque en los próximos años, en Brasil, van a tener lugar ambos acontecimientos; y desde hace algunos años ya se están proyectando y realizando infinidad de obras en infraestructuras para prepararse para organizar las competiciones. El primero en tener lugar será La Copa del Mundo de 2014, y dos años después se celebrarán en Rio de Janeiro los Juegos Olímpicos de verano del 2016. Este gran interés en albergar y organizar una competición como las mencionadas, radica en la creencia, basada en la observación de anteriores ediciones, de que es una oportunidad única para impulsar el crecimiento socioeconómico de un país y/o de una ciudad. No obstante, no resulta automático que el hecho de organizar un mega-evento deportivo internacional impulse económicamente y socialmente a la ciudad o país que lo hace. Hay que tomar las medidas adecuadas, planificar bien las obras de infraestructuras que se llevarán a cabo, y promocionar adecuadamente el país o la ciudad anfitriona del evento, así como ofrecer la mejor imagen del mismo al Mundo, antes y durante la competición. Por este motivo a lo largo de la tesina se analizarán los modelos de organización de varios eventos previos a los que tendrán lugar en Brasil y se analizarán los resultados obtenidos, es decir, los impactos socio-económicos que recibieron por organizar dichos eventos. Estos análisis se utilizarán como referencia para el estudio y estimación de los posibles efectos futuros en los casos de Brasil y Rio de Janeiro. En cuanto a este estudio sobre el caso de Brasil y Rio, se basará en detallar y analizarán las obras proyectadas para ambos eventos, para intentar intuir su futuro impacto económico y social. Para ello se compararán los modelos de organización y planificación con los que se está trabajando en las obras de cara al Mundial de Brasil 2014, y a los Juegos Olímpicos de Rio 2016, con los utilizados en anteriores ediciones. Un factor determinante en el futuro impacto económico que recibe un país o una ciudad por organizar uno de estos mega-eventos, es su incremento del turismo durante el periodo de preparación y celebración, y sobre todo en el periodo posterior a la celebración del mega-evento. En este sentido existen grandes diferencias entre los dos eventos que se analizan a lo largo de esta tesina. Así, por último en esta tesina, se detallarán y analizarán los motivos del impulso diferencial, sobre el crecimiento futuro del turismo, que se da entre albergar un Mundial de Fútbol o unos Juegos Olímpicos.

Este trabajo ofrece un análisis del impacto económico que este evento ha tenido en el país, ofreciendo un marco teórico que contextualiza los eventos, las distintas maneras de calcular el impacto de un evento deportivo y cómo el marketing puede ayudar a promocionar tanto el evento, como el país. También nos contextualiza en el caso del mundial de Catar, para poder realizar un análisis del impacto que ha tenido el mundial para Catar desde la óptica de un análisis coste-beneficio, que muestre la repercusión de este evento deportivo. Book excerpt: Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach

The first is a risk assessment problem. The second relates to risk management. This book provides background on the risks relevant in water systems planning, the different approaches to scenario definition in water system planning, and an introduction to the decision-scaling methodology upon which the decision tree is based. The decision tree is described as a scientifically defensible, repeatable, direct and clear method for demonstrating the robustness of a project to climate change. While applicable to all water resources projects, it allocates effort to projects in a way that is consistent with their potential sensitivity to climate risk. The process was designed to be hierarchical, with different stages or phases of analysis triggered based on the findings of the previous phase. An application example is provided followed by a descriptions of some of the tools available for decision making under uncertainty and methods available for climate risk management. The tool was designed for the World Bank but can be applicable in other scenarios where similar challenges arise.
